Australian Domestic Cricket

Daniel Smith is only 27? He looks about 40.

Hardly see him without his cap on but dam he does indeed look old in his profile pic.

Just saw our squad good to see Starc in it, and Lalor is a good swing bowler from what I hear. We also have a number of talented young spinners, Daniel Burns is another that I have heard good things about along with Doran.

We've reached the end of this warmup, next stop the Champions league.

NSW 8 for 196 - Hughes 38(15), Forrest 45(34), Thornely 35*, Rorher 33
Victoria All out for 142 - Wade 33, Smith 3-20, Thornely 2-9, Keen 2-?, Starc 2-?

Smith is becoming a dam handy bowler, continually picked up wickets through the tournament same for Keen and Starc. Rorher mr consistent, looks like Khawaja won't be playing too much OD games.

Went to this game on Tuesday night :)

I only started jotting down a few notes during the chase so forgive me. The most noteworthy thing from the 1st innings was Ben Rohrer who hit 3 clean sixes over wide long on. Very nice.

Notes from chasing innings:
1) Rob Quiney hit the first ball of the Vic innings from Starc over long on for six  and after that it all fell apart.
2) There was lots of spin bowled in the game. Not sure if it was because of the pitch at the end of a week long tournament or whether it was a genuine strategy. The Vics bowled McGain and Holland for 4 each I think, a kid called Maxwell had a bowl too - Maxwell was a gun in the field too. Then NSW trotted out Smith and Thornely was bowling off spin - has he done that before? Then Warner bowled a couple of overs of leggies at the end when it was out of reach. He has the exact same approach to the crease as Shane Warne - and that's about where the comparisons stop :D
3) While we're comparing Simon Keen seems like a James Hopes clone. Shortish in height for a bowler, but bowls decent mediums and can hit hard with the bat.
4) Steve Smith dropped at least a couple of catches - one a very hard hit that burst through his hands at mid on, another a catch at long off where he had to move in and half dive forward. Neither were easy. He fluffed a couple of return catches/bump balls off his bowling too. He wasn't happy :D
5) Never seen Aaron Bird bowl with his old action - thanks Channel Nine for ditching domestic cricket... - but his new one looks good. No kinks in the arm and he had good pace. Mitchell Starc looked quite good too once he got his line right. NSW have a very deep bowling squad when you consider the top level guys too.

Cheers for the report, Thornely was bowling off spin most of last season. Starc I know if very similar to Johnson probably got a slightly better action although haven't got all these TV replays of him like we do with Johnson.

Some other warm up games

South Australia 223/2 off 20 ov (Harris 100*, Cosgrove 58, Klinger 42, Rimmington 1/30 (4ov), Doran 1/35 (3ov)) beat Queensland 210/8 (Townsend 62, Moller 35, Hartley 26, Cleary 3/36 (4ov), Haberfield 2/33 (4ov), Bailey 2/42 (4ov)) by 13 runs

Tasmania 170/6 off 20 overs (Lockyear 55, Bailey 39, Krejza 28 (26b), McDermott 3/25 (4ov), Doran 2/17) beat Queensland 142 all out off 18.3 ov (Townsend 56 (45b), Kruger 27, Lynch 3/14 (1.3ov), Dighton 1/12, Day 1/16, Madonald 1/13) by 28 runs

Tasmania (Bailey 76, Cowan 47, Marsh 46*, Walter 2/44, Sullivan 2/69, Doran 1/59 (10ov), Philipson 1/29 (6ov), Cutting 1/43 (9ov)) beat 260/8 Queensland (Broad 80, Reardon 62) by 2 wickets

Promising thing is both the teams specialist spinners were playing so hopefully they keep this up.

Yeah his action seems a bit more correct than Mitch's but his appearance is quite similar. Same spiky black hair and shape of the face. Looks to be one for the future though, I was impressed with both he and Bird.

Probably best for Bracken to step down from FC, hes got no chance of making the Test side so may as well let one of our many up and coming bowlers get some experience.

Yea quite funny how similar they are in every aspect. Hopefully his batting is similar too :p

U23 season is underway.
So far the spinners have gone well. Boyce took 1 wicket, Mangan 2 and Bailey 4.
Batting wise Hill hit 132 off 136, Cooper was flying at 38 off 25 but got out.

Bad luck for Victoria that Damien Wright is injured for the Champions League, with Nannes gone he would be really useful in our bowling attack. Having said that, I wouldn't mind seeing young James Pattinson given a go, his FC debut was fantastic last year and I'm predicting big things from him this summer if given the opportunity. Our fast bowling stocks have always been strong and between Pattinson and John Hastings, we've managed to retain a couple of guys who I've no doubt would be playing regular cricket elsewhere.

WA with the Queensland A bowling attack :p

Some squads for the up and coming matches.
South Australia squad Daniel Harris, James Smith, Michael Klinger, Tom Cooper, Mark Cosgrove, Graham Manou (capt, wk), Aaron O'Brien, Dan Christian, Mark Cleary, Jake Haberfield, Peter George, Chris Duval, Cullen Bailey.

Looks like 2 bowlers will drop out unless they want to play Christian in the top 7 but not really needed with O'Brien and Cosgrove able to bowl. Hope Duval plays, hes another good tall fast bowler that is handy with the bat.

Queensland squad Chris Simpson (capt), Glen Batticciotto, Ryan Broad, Lee Carseldine, Chris Hartley (wk), James Hopes, Ben Laughlin, Alister McDermott, Craig Philipson, Nathan Reardon, Nathan Rimmington, Chris Swan, Wade Townsend.

Lots of new faces, no spinner of note, wouldn't class Simpson as a spinner these days.

I'm starting to like SA's openers. Smith and Cooper both got big 100s against Vic u23, Cooper ending up with 221 and Smith 173.

From the WA v Tassie game Irvine was the pick with a 5 fer and hes opening the batting.

McDermott picked up a 5 fer against ACT u23.
