Australian Domestic Cricket

Damn Tassie are finishing the season strong, gotta be favourites to take the shield trophy again this year. Ponting giving all us doubters a slap across the face with a 75*, 130 and now 111 in his three innings back at state level. Cowan unbeaten on 135, so neither will have any trouble holding their place for the Windies. Disappointed that Bird only took a 5-fer, I expected more from him.

NSW hanging in there, we actually might not lose. Who's this Dawson character? Must be doing something in grade cricket considering he hasn't played shield cricket for 2 years.

Why are there Ponting doubters still? Didn't he have a fairly decent summer in test cricket :) The man will smash county/state bowling attacks around for fun. The only times he hasn't got runs in his career were early in India, and then when England had a ridiculous pace attack. Even in the 2005 one, he still hit that ridiculous innings where he basically saved the game.

David Dawson, the Tasmanian? Ah, so many Ds to play for Tasmania in the last decade. Di Venuto, Dighton, Denton, Doherty, Drew, Doolan, Downton, Duval, Dawson. Alliteration obliteration.

Finally got some batsmen pushing their claims or maintaining their ones. If there was any doubt on Cowan he shut them up quickly. Ponting likewise after his poor ODI showing. Burns also showing his talent, one of the few youngsters to stand up while Maddinson finally in the runs.

As for Victoria bit of a lol to be owned by Rorher.

That's the one. Probably the last time we hear from him after that performance, though he was probably called up last minute for Katich anyways.
Shame the Kat man won't get a final send off from NSW, but shows the kinda guy he is to let Dawson have his from shield cricket.

Just ran it myself from Latest Results link and was surprised to be there! Absolutely stunning effort from Ponting.

I'm buggered if I can work out the shield points table. It seems a win is worth 4 points, highest first innings total worth 2 points and nothing for a draw. But WA seem to have picked up an additional 4 points and the Vics 2 points from somewhere.

Anyway, looks like Qld have booked their place in the final and as long as Tassie can finish WA off, they'll be there too.

Apparently a win is worth 6 points.

I thought that might've been the old system, but I see the first innings points only apply in a drawn or lost match, so I guess that's where those other points came from for WA and Vic. Cheers :thumbs

With this new found information, it looks like the Vics are going to make things interesting as they near victory over NSW.

Qld has already wrapped up their match to finish on 36 points, Tassie aren't far off demolishing WA to also finish on 36 (11 wicket haul for Bird so far, 3 victims remain) and finally Victoria whom I just put the kiss of death on (Rogers just fell for a well made 70) are inching closer to 36 points themselves.

Qld were in the bag with that game, SA just didn't put up resistance, as has been their wont all season. Qld have the most wins, so they get the home final, which still seems well deserved with points even. With Tassie and Victoria winning comfortably, it came down to quotient and in real terms that means they both needed to chase for the least loss of wickets. Tassie edged ahead by 0.034. As agonisingly close as Victoria were, it will be WA who are the most gutted.

The points table is decided this way

Match points

(i) For an outright win after leading on the first innings 6
(ii) For an outright win after a tie in the first innings 6
(iii) For an outright win after being behind on the first innings 6
(iv) For a tie where both teams have completed two
innings (irrespective of the first innings result) 3
(v) For a first innings lead (to be retained even if beaten outright) 2
(vi) For an outright loss after leading on the first innings 2
(vii) For a tie on the first innings (and no outright result) 1 each
(viii) For an outright loss after a tie in the first innings 1
(ix) For a loss on the first innings 0
(x) For an outright loss after being behind on the first innings 0
(xi) Abandoned or drawn matches with no first innings result 0

Well its good to see Tasmania reaching the finals and I would love to see them take away the title. Queensland have a decent side the ex Tasmanian captaining the side but I feel Tasmania will be pleased to see Ponting and Ed Cowan scoring the majority
