Australian chairman of selectors Andrew Hildich announced the Australian test squad to tour the West Indies today in Sydney. The only noteable selection bolter was young Queensland quick Mitchell Johnson who took the spot of Jason Gillespie in the 20 man squad. Victorian middle order batsman Brad Hodge has also earnt a recall to the test squad. South Australian off spinner Dan Cullen has also been named in the squad, to form a spin trio with Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill.
(Mitchell Johnson was the bolter for selection in the test squad)
It appears that Matthew Hayden and Justin Langers performances in the domestic Pura Cup competition, in which Hayden made 233* and Langer was consistently posting scores over 50, was enough to earn the openers a seat on the trip to the West Indies. However with the youth of Phil Jacques breathing down their neck it remains to be seen if either is selected for the first test in Antigua.
(Matthew Hayden has retained his spot in the touring party but will be under plenty of pressure to retain his place in the team)
The Australian test squad reads as follows:

The West Indies test squad has been announced ahead of the 3 test series against Australia starting next week. As their opponents prepare to depart for their defence of the Sir Frank Worrell Trophy, the West Indian players will arrive in Antigua to prepare for the series.
Captain Brian Lara will again be the focal point for the home side, however he will require experienced team mates Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan to assist him if the home side are to stand any chance of victory.
Corey Collymore and Daren Powell are expected to lead the bowling attack, with attacking all rounder Dwayne Bravo to assist along with Omari Banks potentially being used as a spinning option.

The Australian test cricket team has arrived in the island of Barbados ahead of their 3 test series against the West Indies. The first match will be against the West Indies "A" team in Barbados ahead of the 1st test.
Captain Ricky Ponting indicated he was confident his side would defend the Frank Worrell Trophy against a struggling West Indies side.
"We have to go into every competition confident and believing that we can win it, this is no exception. Its an exciting time for Australian cricket, we have some really good young players coming through that are pushing for test spots and have the chance to get our test season back on track after some average performances against India and South Africa.
We are under no illusions as to this tour however, the West Indies have always been a tough team to beat, especially at home infront of a very vocal and supportive crowd. However if we can lift our game and play to the best of our abilities I believe we can retain this trophy."

Australia have opted to play a largely second tier team for the tour match against West Indies "A" in Barbados tomorrow with an eye to the 1st test between the countries in Antigua.
Michael Hussey, Matthew Hayden, Stuart Clark Justin Langer and Andrew Symonds are the only players remaining in the lineup from the team that lost the last test to India in the Australian home summer. This has given a number of players the chance to press their claims for selection in the first test starting in a weeks time.
There appears to be three contests shaping up in this match that will effect the outcome of the test squad.
The most intriguing contest will be the battle for the openers spot, with Justin Langer, Matthew Hayden and Phil Jacques all selected for the tour match, with Langer expected to bat at 3. It may be a case of whoever scores the most will be selected for Antigua.

The second will be the battle for the number 6 batting position. Andrew Symonds and Shane Watson will battle it out with both bat and ball in an allrounder position while Brad Hodge has his chance to bat at 6 should he perform well in tomorrows game.
(Brad Hodge will have his chance to impress, batting at number 4)
The last of the battles will be for the third bowling position, with Stuart Clark and Shaun Tait bowling off for the position. While if either Andrew Symonds or Shane Watson is selected as an allrounder, Stuart MacGill may be given the opportunity to partner Shane Warne.
Australian lineup: 1. Phil Jacques, 2. Matthew Hayden, 3. Justin Langer (c), 4. Brad Hodge, 5. Brad Haddin (wk), 6. Andrew Symonds, 7. Shane Watson, 8. Stuart Clark, 9. Stuart MacGill, 10. Dan Cullen, 11. Shaun Tait
Very very nice build-up to the Test Series MWaugh. I am looking foward to seeing the likes of Hodge, Jacques and Cullen to try and push for selection. Also interesting to see you are playing two spinners and two allrounders.
Welcome to Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados as we await the match between the West Indian "A" team and the touring Australian test side. News from out in the middle is that West Indies captain Darren Ganga has won the toss and has elected to bat first on a solid flat track. Its lovely and hot today and hopefully this will continue into the full 4 days of the match.
Lets have a look at the lineups for both sides, with Australia trialling a variety of players considered on the fringe of test selection. 3 Players worth a close look in the West Indies side will be captain Darren Ganga, fast bowler Tino Best and wicket keeper Danesh Ramdin, all of whom are a chance to play in the first test in Antigua.
