great match.. evey chances of going down to a wire.......
great batting by adam...again he saved his team..now its time for the bowlers to perform well & bring their team to a level th series 1-1.
Im predicting a draw here, i dont think SA have the firepower to chase that total but i also dont think the Aussies can bowl them out, maybee if i had to choose it would be the Aussies to win but im thinking a draw at the moment.
I think Australia will win this one by a margin of 100+ runs. After seeing what Petersen has done on this pitch taking his 5 for in the second innings and considering the spinners that the Aussies have in their team who you would have to say are better than Petersen at generating spin, you would think the Aussies would fancy themselves to win this one. Get Kallis early and you will win
Paceman Glenn McGrath claimed the perfect start for Australia as South Africa looked to reel in the 322 runs needed for victory in the second Castle Larger test match.
McGrath knocked off Herschelle Gibbs' off stump when the opening batsman was beaten by an away swinging delivery that snuck under his bat for a duck to leave his side in the woeful position of 1/0 - not a good start to the 15th largest run chase in history.
The result of the test series between Australia and South Africa may not have ended but the on going battle between young quick Brett Lee and South African captain Graeme Smith most certainly has - and Lee took the contest 4-0 in very easy fashion.
Lee claimed the wicket of Smith for the 4th time in as many innings to send the captain to the shed just before stumps on day 4 of the 2nd test against Australia.
Lee again proved that Smith has a weakness with the shortball when Smith played late on a bouncer that was skied high in the air towards mid on. Lee was then able to run around and take the catch off his own bowling, a fitting end to a series Smith would rather forget and a fine way for Lee to stamp his authority on Smith as both teams prepare to storm into the one dayers.
It was a dissapointing end to Smiths knock of 39, in which he appeared to show signs of form. It also left his team in the dangerous position of 2/71 at stumps, still a long way from the 322 needed for victory and 3 sesssions from a draw, although with Kallis at the crease, anything is possible.
The four pronged attack of Lee, McGrath, Warne and MacGill combined to take Australia to the verge of a pounding victory in the final test of the 2 match series against South Africa at Cape Town today.
Warne, MacGill and McGrath all claimed 2 wickets while Lee claimed one as South Africa slumped to be 7/163 after a middle order collapse took away any hopes of a result on day 5 of the test match.
(Jacques Rudolph was the only batsman to put his hand up)
The Proteas appeared to be on the right track with the score at 4/158 with Jacques Rudolph making 57 before disaster struck in the form of the two leg-spinners. Warne and MacGill combined to take 4 wickets for 5 runs to leave Shaun Pollock and Nicky Boje with a huge job of trying to save the test match.
Glenn McGrath started the rot when he and Ricky Ponting combined as Ponting took a spectacular catch at 2nd slip to dismiss Kallis for 34. Warne then took the vital wicket of Mark Boucher when he was stumped off the bowling of Shane Warne as the home side realed at 7/163.
Stuart MacGill chimed in with 5 wickets as Australia wrapped up the 2nd test match after the South African lineup amazingly collapsed to allow the Aussies to walk away with a comfortable 113 runs at Cape Town.
After a promising start from Graeme Smith (39), Jacques Kallis (34) and Jacques Rudolph (57), the middle and lower order went down swinging trying to reel in the 300 run target, amazingly dispanding within 2 hours on the 5th day and still a long way off the target.
MacGill was the man of the innings with a spectacular 5/27 from 11.4 overs. All in all the match showed the dominance of the Australian unit, showing what they are capable with when it comes to batting and also showing the depth of the bowling, with second spinner MacGill taking 5 wickets in the second innings.
Nicholas - Welcome down to the ground here at Cape Town. With me I have the victorious captain Ricky Ponting. Ricky you would have to be delighted with that performance?
Ponting - Definatly Mark. Its great to see the guys respond like they have. Full credit to Gilly, Matty Hayden and Clarkey for the way they stepped up with the bat and the bowlers just showed that they are the best unit in the world.
Nicholas - So are you ready to jump in the colours and play some one day cricket or would you like to play more tests at this point?
Ponting - To be honest i think the one dayers have come at a very good time. These two tests have been so tough for us and it will just be a great chance to have a crack at our rivals in the shortened form of the game
Nicholas - Thanks very much for that Ricky. Good luck with the 3 one day matches coming up. Im sure youll do well.
Ponting - Thanks Nicholas
(Ricky Ponting reflects on a great test match and a very competitive series)
Nicholas - Ok so here is Graeme Smith, the captain of South Africa, unfortunatly the losing captain for todays game. Graeme a dissapointing way to finish a very good series.
Smith - Yes not the way we wanted to finish this series Mark. We faught really hard and we backed ourselves to chase down the 300 or so runs needed for the win but unfortunatly it wasnt to be and im a bit annoyed at the way we let the match go without a fight.
Nicholas - So now the focus will be on the one dayers?
Smith - You guessed it. We have built a strong winning culture in the one day form and we still have to repay our fans for the disaster at WC 2003. We have had some great matches with Australia and im sure that will continue.
Nicholas - Thanks for your time Graeme best of luck with the up coming games
(Graeme Smith shows the strain after a poor last innings)
Nicholas - Ok now to the presentation for the man of the match and man of the series. With me i have the man of the match and I guess its no suprise to all here at the ground that the little spinner Robin Peterson has been selected as player of the match. A quick word Robin, congratulations on a great display.
Peterson - Thanks Mark. Yeah what a great chance to play against Australia and to take 10 wickets is amazing. Im on top of the world. Unfortunatly we couldnt get away with a win but its just really great to be back in the frame and the ball came out so well in the match.
Nicholas - Is there a chance we can see you in the colours in a weeks time?
Peterson - That would be great but i dont think so. Nicky Boje is a world class spinner so id expect him to play but perhaps if the pitch throws up some issues i might be in with a shout.
Nicholas - Well congratulations again and now to our player of the series. With his performances he almost took South Africa to a 2-0 series whitewash. I am of course talking about a man i personally think is the best batsman in the world, Jacques Kallis. Jacques a great series mate you really did your country proud.
Kallis - Well thanks for the entrance Mark. I tell you what we almost took that game there. It was great to get that first win over Australia. We havent done that in 3 years now and the feeling in the camp is very positive. Obviously we would have liked to have come closer in this match but jeez i tell you we will give a great fight in the One Dayers.
Nicholas - No doubt about that. I expect you will play a big part in those games.
Kallis - Thats always the hope. Ill probably stick at 3 and hopefully get some more quality overs against teh best lineup in the world. I think some quality cricket is coming up and it will be great to show our stuff on the world stage.
(Jacques Kallis with his player of the series award)
