Captain Inspires Fightback

South African captain Graeme Smith ignited his side late on day 3 of the 2nd test match against Australia with a absolute gem of a catch to dismiss Justin Langer for a duck and leave Australia hard pressed against the wall in their second innings.

Australia were looking to see out the 6 overs till stumps on day 3 without loosing a wicket but unfortunatly things went from bad to worse after langer was caught at second slip trying to play a fend from his body on the off side.

Smith took the catch off former captain Shaun Pollock and there was increased energy in the field with Ricky Ponting due in with the score at 1/0 and still with 3 overs remaining in the day.

And in the last over of the day Makhaya Ntini struck with Ricky Ponting falling to his leg side and trying to whip one off his pads that flew straight to Jacques Kallis at square leg, Australia in deep, deep trouble at 2/5 from 6 overs with Matthew Hayden (4*) and nightwatchman Shane Warne (0*) at the crease.

(Shane Warne was sent in as nightwatchman with only a number of balls remaining)

Not the best of starts for the Aussies! Brilliant catch from Smith though has to be said, but with Hayden and Australia's newest all rounder at the crease anything is still possible for you!

Im loving the realism involved with this thread although i would have picked Gillespie as the night watchman, personal preference, bad start for the Aussies, good first wicket, Ponitng should be dissapointed with that just before the end of play, silly shot.

in theory yes. the only problem is that gillespie wasnt picked for this match and is therefor unable to bat :p

Shaney needs to stay in for a llonngg time while Ricky goes after them i found if you try to fend off South africans some time youl get out but if you go after them youlll do a bit better. Great thread and reps for you

Australia Sink As They Look To Build Lead

The second innings proved far more difficult than the first for the Australian cricket team as they looked to bat themselves into a commanding position on day 4 of the 2nd test at Cape Town.

Resuming the day at 2/5 with Shane Warne and Matthew Hayden the not out batsmen, things quickly went from bad, to worse, to terrible as Australia crawled their way along to be 6/64 at lunch on day 4.

Warne was the first to go when he edged a Robin Peterson delivery through to Mark Boucher behind the stumps on 9. In all fairness Warne had done his job of nightwatchman as he did survive the night but many would feel that this was a wasted chance for a player with a considerable amount of batting skill.

Hayden (13) and Damien Martyn (17) were able to take the score to 42 before Ntini jammed one into the ribs of Hayden. An outside edge was produced off the fending shot and Smith took an easy catch at 2nd slip.

Damien Martyn followed in the next over when he was contriversially judged LBW from Nicky Boje which was followed in the next over by Michael Clarke getting a fine edge through to Boucher of Peterson again and falling for a duck, Australia now in a shocking position at 6/43.

However Simon Katich and Adam Gilchrist have been able to manage to consolidate and take the team to 6/64.

Gilchrist May Have Saved Aussies

Adam Gilchrist appeared to single handedly steer Australia towards victory on day 4 of test match against South Africa at Cape Town.

Gilchrist plundered 83 from 105 balls batting at number 8 as he lifted the tourists to be all out for 155, a terrible total non the less but still a lead of 322 - which will be a huge ask on the spinner friendly wickets against Warne and MacGill.

Gilchrist was only minorly helped by Simon Katich (19) as he attacked both the spinners and the quicks on his way to his 2nd 50 of the match, backing up after a 96 not out in the first innings.

The left hander may have been denied a hundred again due to the fact that he had to bat at number 8 after Shane Warne was sent in as night watchman.

All eyes will now be on the South African top order and we will see how they respond to the avalanche that is sure to be launched from the pace of Lee, the precision of McGrath, the genious of Warne, and the huge spinning attack of MacGill as Australia look to tie the series at 1 each.

And to think people were saying that adding Petersen to the squad was a bad idea.....

The Task Ahead

Following Australias 2nd innings total of 155, South Africa now face a large run chase of 322 runs to win the 2nd Castle Larger test match at Cape Town. South Africa will have to make the 15th highest 4th innings total in the history of test cricket if they are to complete a 2-0 series whitewash.

With 4 sessions and 1 over worth of play remaining in the match, it appears that the Proteas will have a greater chance of chasing down the total rather than trying to defend against the spin of Warne and MacGill over the course of the last days play on the spinning wicket.

Remarkably the only time a South African team has chased down a total larger than 322 was against a Steve Waugh led Australian side when they made 5/340 at Durban in 2002. Herschelle Gibbs made 104 in that innings while Graeme Smith made 42 and Jacques Kallis was 61 not out.

(Herschelle Gibbs stood up and made 104 to win the 3rd test against Australia at Durban)

The responsibility for the run chase will no doubt rest firmly on the shoulders on the top order of the Proteas lineup. Gibbs and Smith are yet to fire in the series and Jacques Kallis has time and again proven why he is one of the best batsmen in the world.

(Graeme Smith has been pounded by Brett Lee in this series and is yet to find form)

Who will win this contest? Only time will tell...
