South Africa Put Under Pump

The Australian cricket team showed a vast improvement from the first match of test series against South Africa with a calculated display of pace and spin bowling on a dry and dusty wicket at Cape Town today.

After loosing openers Smith and Gibbs before the close of play on day 2, the pressure rested firmly on the shoulders of Jacques Kallis and Jacques Rudolph to save the Proteas of the dreadful situation of 2/12 chasing down a lead of 411 set by Australia over the prior 2 days.

But Rudolph (43) and Kallis (31*) showed the heart and fighting spirit that has long been a trademark of the Proteas team. Both batsmen showed attacking flair and patience as they added a much needed 73 to the total before Rudolph was struck infront my McGrath.

Unfortunatly for the Proteas Boeta Dippenaar was unable to contribute greatly to the scoreboard with only 9 before Warne clipped his off stump, leaving the home side at 4/107 at lunch and leaving the Australian bolwers with 1 wicket each.

Kallis and the hero from the 2nd innings of the first test for South Africa, Ashwell Prince if South Africa hope to make it past the 211 needed to avoid the follow on.

Boje Leads Proteas Past Follow On

Left handed spinner Nicky Boje and wicket keeper Mark Boucher proved the heros as South Africa managed to avoid the follow on mark of 211 while chasing down Australias first innings score of 411 in the second test at Cape Town.

It was Jacques Kallis (79), and Jacques Rudolph (43) who initially set the tone for the chase however loosing the wickets of Kallis, Rudolph and then Dippenaar (9), and Prince (21) shortly after, left the home side in trouble at 6/177.

However Mark Boucher (21 from 82 balls)showed his traditional fight and determination as he stablised the innings. Boucher however was not helped by former captain Shaun Pollock who was caught prodding at a Shane Warne leg-spinner for 1, South Africa in deep trouble at 7/178.

Enter Nicky Boje. Boje and Boucher were able to wag the tail with a 61 run stand that took South Africa past the dreaded follow on position.

Boje scored 44 from 80 balls to ensure that his team would take to the field in the next innings and take some pressure off themselves.

Shane Warne (4/85 from 34.3 overs) and Stuart MacGill (3/53 from 26 overs) were the pick of the bowlers which has indicated that it will be tough to bat last in this match for South Africa against two of the best spinners in the world.

So Australia now have a tense 20 minutes before stumps on day 3 to bat out and then on to day 4 as they look to build on their 166 run lead and bid to take their lead in the 350 region.

Half Way Discussion:

Ricky Ponting
"I thought our batting innings was probably the most complete we have had so far on this tour. We had about 5 or 6 guys really stand up but unfortunatly nobody could reach the magic milestone of 100. I think this sends a positive sign for the next innings and for future matches, that we are starting to click and things are looking good.

Our bowling was very tight and well planned. Im very proud of the way Glenn, Brett, Warnie and Stuie all went about their jobs. Shane and Stu spun the ball alot and again combined well to take 7 wickets all up and Brett is just bowling so quick these days, he is a handful and i have full confidence in us from this point on"

Graeme Smith
"Well i wasnt overly worried about our performance in the field on days 1 and 2. We bowled well and Robin was great bagging 5. But 400 on this oval in the first innings on a pitch like the one we have here is a pretty standard target.

I was however worried about our batting. Unfortunatly myself and Herschelle didnt get off to a great start and its always hard chasing 400 when you are 2/12. But again Jacques stood up and i think this series has shown that he is one of, if not the best in the world. We will really have to improve our batting if we are going to take anything out of this game and the way Warnie and Stuart MacGill bowled today we are well aware of how hard that job will be"
