Australian Wicket-Keeper Adam Gilchrist appears on track to compile his 16th test century after his smashing 80 not out has put Australia in control of the second test at Cape Town.
Gilchrist and Michael Clarke, who made 57 from 105 balls, made the second session of play on day 2 their own as they streched Australias advantage from 5/292 at lunch to 7/394 at the tea interval. Both batsmen showing the aggression that is needed to play the likes of Nicky Boje and Robin Peterson, who are both turning the ball a long way allready in this test match.
Clarke and Gilchrist paid particular attention to Peterson in their partnership of 126 runs.
(Adam Gilchrist again proved the X-Factor in the Aussie batting lineup)
South Africa did pick up to late wickets curtousy of Peterson, who had Michael Clarke caught in the deep for 57, and Makhaya Ntini - who picked up his first wicket of the match when he had Shane Warne caught at second slip by Graeme Smith for a duck.
(Michael Clarke showed his class before falling to a catch on the ropes)
However with Brett Lee the only recognised decent tailender left time may be against Gilchrist in his quest for a hundred as he has the pure tailenders of McGrath and MacGill in next.

he has to make 100 first . we all know how bad mcgrath and macgill can be so i have to hope that lee can stay with him long enough to do some real damage when he hits out after the ton... if he gets there of course
Test newcomer Robin Peterson bagged his first 5 wicket haul of his test career as he left Adam Gilchrist stranded in the nineties as the Australian tail failed to wag as Australia were bowled out for 411 late on day 2 of the second test.
Peterson took 5/92 from 38.3 overs as he cleaned up Glenn McGrath and Stuart MacGill to leave Gilchrist on 94 not out, only 6 runs short of his 16th test century.
The Australian tail of Warne (0), Lee (2), McGrath (0) and MacGill (0) definatly failed to wag as the world premier attacking looked on in disbelief as he stood at the non-strikers end.
Gilchrists innings does give Australia a definate advantage as 411 is the highest score by any team so far in the 5 innings played in South Africa and the footmarks outside the leg and off stumps are starting to develop nicely for all spinners concerned.
McGrath, Lee, MacGill and Warne will now look to make the most of the hour left in the days play to try and take a few early wickets.
What a story! I have just read this from page 1, and I throughly enjoyed the read. Keep up this great work man, but for some reason, I can see this test heading for a draw, don't know why.
Key Player: South Africa
Obviously Robin Peterson was the stand out. You cant take 5 wickets against the best test team in the world without producing a stand out performance. Two of his wickets were MacGill and McGrath but the way he deceived both Hayden and Langer was simply class. He will no doubt get alot more effective later on in this mate and the Australians will have to use their feet more to cancel out the spin.
(Robin Peterson justified his selection in the test team with 5 wickets)
Australia
For me it was Adam Gilchrist. Matty Hayden did very well at the top of the order against the new ball but the way Gilly played really took the advantage from South Africa and hammered the advantage home. It was really unfortunate that Peterson ripped a century from his grasp.

The Pitch
The pitch is playing very even and flat which is unfortunate for the quicks but the big concern for me is that the footmarks are starting to grow and i think with the amount of left handers in both sides that all the spinners will really come into play alot more and will decide this match.

The Winner
I think if Australia can get some quick wickets before stumps, maybe 1 or 2, then they are on the way to winning this test. Warne and MacGill will be shocking on the last day on this wicket. It will turn a long way and to have 2 class spinners in your armoury will prove very valuable.
