yes me and you both. i think the one dayers will be very tight judging from the test results and the lack of one day cricket i have played. aus didnt play overly well against border but im sure they will step up against the old foe of SA

Over the past number of years Australia and South Africa have forged one of the most competitive and closest rivalries seen in world cricket. Over the course of the past number of decades there have been a number of matches that will forever stick in the mind of South African, Australian and world cricketing fans. These matches include:

WORLD CUP 1999
Super 6 Match - 13/6/1999 - Leeds

Australia, set 272 for victory got home amazingly on the back of a unbeaten 120 from captain Stephen Waugh as they snatched victory with only 2 balls to spare. This allowed them another shot at the Africans in the semi final and a chance to make the final itself.

WORLD CUP 1999
Semi Final Match - 17/6/1999 - Edgebaston

Australia laboured to be all out for 213 from 49.4 overs thanks to knocks from Steve Waugh (56) and Michael Bevan (65) with Shaun Pollock (5/36) and Alan Donald (4/32) at their deadly best. This target appeared within reach with the middle order of Kallis, Rhodes, Boucher and Kluesner all making starts. However amazingly Alan Donald was run out with 2 balls remaining in the match and scores level. One of the most famous ties in history and Australia progressed to the final which they won.

SUPER CHALLENGE 2000
2nd Match - 18/8/2000 - Colonial Stadium Melbourne

With the cricketing world begining to trial playing under an enclosed roof for the first time who would be better to play in the groundbreaking series. The two teams didnt dissapoint. The second match resulted in a tie with the scores locked at 226 runs.
Jonty Rhodes (54) and Mark Boucher (51) combined to put South Africa in a strong position but Mark Waugh (48) and Ricky Ponting (39) were able to get Australia to the point where victory was a possibility but Shane Warne (9*) was able to get the home side to a breathtaking tie.

ONE DAY PREVIEW

With the dust settled from the test series and a 1-1 result the outcome, all focus is now onto the shortened form of the game, with the 3 match Castle Larger one day series ready to begin.

The test series showed the cricketing world just how competitive these teams are and has promised a cracking and passionate one day series. The test series has also brought up issues of form and dominance with certain players and we will now look at the key match-ups in this years series.

LEE VS SMITH

The young quick fired 4 warnings at the South Australian captain in the test series when he claimed his wicket in each of the 4 innings to highlight his rise in maturity in test cricket. Smith will hope that things improve for him in the shortened form of the game with Lee regarded as one of the best one day bowlers in the world at the moment.

McGRATH VS KALLIS

The man of the series from the tests will look to continue his hot streak against an attack missing his rival Shane Warne, which will mean that Australias most successful fast bowler, Glenn McGrath will have to step up and take to Kallis early if Australia hope to win this series as Kallis can be the best batsman in the world on his day.

GILCHRIST VS POLLOCK

Both Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Pollock are rated as the best one day players in their respected countries. Fortunatly for both teams and the South African crowd at the upcoming games, both are coming off solid series. Pollock showed his skill with the ball, taking wickets at constant intervals to upset the Australians, while Gilchrist lead Australia to victory in the second test with a 96* in the first innings and 71 in the second. This matchup could prove to be the key when the series is decided.

AUSTRALIA VS SOUTH AFRICA

With the South Africans recent strong showing in the tests and the home ground advantage of playing in South Africa, it appears this series will be as close as ever. If Australia play to their potential then they are strong favourites but the middle order will have to find some form. Players such as Hussey and Symonds will play a big part in the changing of tempo from the tests to the 50 over form of the game.

A big thank you to Langerrox for the signatures for this post. If you think its good rep me....... and then rep him :p. thanks for the posts. keep them up guys

ONE DAY TEAMS ARRIVE FOR OPENER

The South African and Australian one day squads have assembled at Cape Town ahead of the much anticipated first match of the one day series between the two sides at the Newlands Ground in Cape Town.

Australian squad members Andrew Symonds, Brad Hogg, Michael Hussey and Shane Watson now come into the frame for the series, replacing test stars Justin Langer and Shane Warne.

Andrew Symonds appeared excited about the series when he spoke to the local media after training.

"Well its definatly great to be here. I still have very strong memories of our world cup campaign back in 2003, that was some of the best cricket i feel i have played and im feeling really confident of a good showing here. I am the fittest i have been in a long time, the ball is coming out well and i feel as though im striking it well."

(Andrew Symonds gets his feet wet at training)

Adam Gilchrist appeared confident that his team would continue thier strong form the shortened version of the game, indicating that despite two very tough test matches, his team were still very fresh and confident.

"Well we have only played three games so far this year. They were 2 huge matches for us but everybody looks really keen which is the main factor when you look around the sheds. There is a huge buzz and everybody seems really pumped and ready to go.

Excellent stuff as usual mate. I have been really busy with shifting in the past few weeks, and hence couldnt post in this thread. Just went through the entire thing and I am really looking forward to the ODIs after the cracking test series.

I also did get your PM, and am discussing the matter with the admins. Will PM you back soon.

The Pitch - There may be a bit of movement out there in the first few overs with the new white ball. I think you will have to take a few wickets early because this track will become alot easier to bat on as it dries out in the South African sun.

The Toss - Ricky Ponting has won the toss and elected to field. To me thats not a bad decision. Hopefully for Australia McGrath and Lee can take some wickets early because this South African team bats very deep.

The Lineups - The South Africans have taken the same team in as they did in the 1st test, Nel coming in to replace Peterson. I think this is a strong team with good depth with the bat and the ball. Australia have dropped MacGill for Gillespie and welcome specialists Andrew Symonds and Michael Hussey into the team. This will help Australia to no end and strengthen the bowling attack. This looks as though it may be a pressure game for Jason Gillespie. I think with the amount of talent waiting on the bench that he will have to produce the goods soon.

gillespie-celebrates-wicket.jpg

(Jason Gillespie's place in the team appears under threat with a strong stock of bowlers waiting in the wings)

What they said:

"This probably wasnt a bad toss to loose. This gives us a very good chance to get some runs on the board and then make them chase our total. Im very confident that we can come away with a good result here but we will have to perform at our best throughout the series."
- Graeme Smith

"I just think that this pitch might give us some assistance early and we will hopefully be able to let Brett Lee loose and hope that he can continue his good form. It will be great to have Simmo (Symonds) and Michael (Hussey) back in the team aswell as Hoggy in to bowl his spin. We are all really up for this game and this series"
- Ricky Ponting

woohoo! go aussie!

looking forward to a great match, a great series and an excellent completion of the international season (after a lot more games).

Good luck MWaugh
