Teams Prepare For First Battle

Both the Indian and Australian teams have had thier final hit out at the GABBA ground in Brisbane ahead of tomorrows first test match. In early news it appears that India may go in with 5 specialist bowlers, putting great pressure on their top 5 batsman. Rahul Dravid indicated at a press conference immediatly after training of the decisions to play 5 bowlers.

"At the moment it looks as though we may go in with 3 quicks and 2 spinners. Obviously the pitch looks as though there is some grass on top but we have 2 of the best spinners in the world and Anil (Kumble) and Harbhajan (Singh) have both proven to be very very successful against Australia so we will probably play both of them aswell."

When asked about the danger it poses to the top order Dravid appeared confident that they could stand up to the challenge.

"With the exception of Guatam Gambhir, the top 5 have all played down here and we have all been successful at one point or another. I think its just a case of concentration and working together and we should be able to prosper."

Likely Indian Lineup: 1. Guatam Gambhir, 2. Virender Sehwag (vc), 3. Rahul Dravid (c), 4. Sachin Tendulkar, 5. Sourav Ganguly, 6. Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7. Anil Kumble, 8. Harbhajan Singh, 9. Ajit Agarkar, 10. Zaheer Khan, 11. Ashish Nehra

(Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly (back turned) get one final hit out before the first test begins.)

Ponting - "We Are Ready"

Australian captain Ricky Ponting appeared extremely positive when talking to the media after the teams final practice session at the GABBA today. Ponting indicated that the team will go in unchanged from the side that was named 2 days ago. The captain assure the home fans that the team was ready to go hammer and tong at one of the toughest test teams to play against... India.

"The mood at the moment is very good. We have come off a very good back end of the series against South Africa and now we face one of the biggest tests in world cricket. Australia Vs India matches are always filled with passion and im sure that wont change here. We need to be 1-0 up at the end of this test and carry that momentum with us."

When asked about the performance thus far of the inclusions to the test team, Nathan Bracken, Shane Watson and Michael Hussey, Ponting indicated they had settle right in.

"No they were never at any stage a problem. Shane and Nathan have been here before and Huss has played with the team in the shortened form of the game. They slotted in perfectly and have added alot of intensity and keenness to the team. I believe its a huge positve."

Australian Team: 1. Matthew Hayden, 2. Justin Langer, 3. Ricky Ponting (c), 4. Michael Clarke, 5. Michael Hussey, 6. Adam Gilchrist (vc)(wk), 7. Shane Watson, 8. Shane Warne, 9. Brett Lee, 10. Nathan Bracken, 11. Glenn McGrath

(Brett Lee and Adam Gilchrist welcome Michael Hussey to the test team ahead of his first test)

Match Introduction - Tony Greig

The Weather

"Well Brisbane is usually nice and hot at this time of the year but at the moment its come over quite cloudy which will probably help the seemers with movement through the air. There may be a chance that some time is lost due to rain but at the moment it looks to be ok."

The Pitch

"A typical Brisbane seemers greentop. A very nice layering of grass will help the pace attack of both units and will make life difficult for the batsman against the new ball. This may spin aswell though, especially with Warne, Kumble and Singh in the match."

The Batsmen

"Two of the most powerful units in world cricket. Its so exciting to have the prospect of these teams going up against each other. Hayden Vs Sehwag, Ponting Vs Dravid and new wonderboy Clarke against Tendulkar. India have gone in with only 5 specialist batsman while Watson will give Australia the ability to bat to 7 aswell as having a bowler. This could go either way."

The Bowlers

"Australia may have the edge through their pace attack. McGrath and Lee love Australian conditions while Bracken and Watson will help when required. Warne again will look to tie down the strokemakers from India.

India will look to barage Australia early through Khan, Nehra and Agarkar but i sense that alot of the overs will be filled by Singh and Kumble who have both tormented the Australias over the past few years."

The Outcome

"Australia probably have the advantage over India given the type of pitch used. However if the Indian top order can fire then India have every chance of winning. Australia for mine"

The Keys

"McGrath will re-new rivalries with Tendulkar as the pair battle for bragging rights. Tendulkar will be crucial for a big total first up to put pressure on the home side."

The Toss

Australian Captian Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bowl on a wicket that promises plenty for the quicks. The captains thoughts on the toss and the match.

"Well I dont think there was any doubt that whoever won the toss would make first use of this pitch with the ball. We definatly need to get some wickets early but if we can do that then im sure we can force the initiative home early."

Ricky Ponting
(Australian Captain)

"We probably would have liked to have had a bowl first on this pitch but thats the way the coin fell. I have full confidence in our top order and our bowlers to do their job aswell. I am feeling very confident about this match."

(Indian Captain)
