Netherlands announce squad for Beach Cricket​

The KNCB have announced the Netherlands' 5-man squad for the Beach Cricket Championship.

Peter Borren, the incumbent skipper of the national side has been retained as captain for the event. Wesley Barresi, who came second on the batting charts for the Dutch in the recently concluded World T20 Qualifier dons the wicket-keeping gloves as expected.

Tom Cooper, a key figure during the Netherlands' impressive 2014 World T20 campaign where they chased down 190 in just 13.5 overs against Ireland, ran South Africa very close and finished by beating England - was recalled after a 1-year hiatus from the national side.

Both Tom Cooper and Ryan ten Doeschate will be making comebacks to bolster the Dutch side.​

Meanwhile, the Dutch selectors handed shock call-ups to veterans Ryan ten Doeschate and Edgar Schiferli. Though ten Doeschate hasn't officially retired from international cricket, he has constantly declared himself unavailable for selection since the conclusion of the 2011 World Cup while globetrotting as a T20 freelancer and playing county cricket for Essex. Schiferli on the other hand hasn't appeared in an orange shirt since his surprising comeback from retirement in 2013, and announced his retirement from all forms of the game earlier this month.

Coach Anton Roux said he was pleased with his squad and fancied his team's chances. "I believe we have what it takes to do well in a competition like this where six hitting matters more than anything else. Our batsmen have shown what they are capable of in the T20 World Cup last year and more recently in the T20 qualifiers too. And not to forget, we did all that without Ryan ten Doeschate who is in our squad this time."

When asked about the exclusion of Stephan Myburgh and preferring Cooper, ten Doeschate and Schiferli over youngsters such as Tim Gruijters, Max O'Dowd and Paul van Meekeren he replied "I do admit Stephan's exclusion was tough and he can feel a bit hard done by, but we needed more all-rounders in our squad to support Cooper and Barresi. He still remains our No 1 opener in all other formats."

"Ryan and Edgar are two of the greatest players we've had over the past decade and absolutely deserve this honor. Especially Edgar who has been unlucky during big tournaments (he missed both the 2007 and 2011 World Cups due to injury) in the past and has been giving it his all for one last hurrah. I believe age is irrelevant while picking squads for a global competition. It's more about getting your best players out on the field like all the big boys are doing. If Australia can pick their best hitters, why can't we? I'm looking forward to working with what I believe is our best squad for a tournament like this one."
