Big Bash League - General Discussion

It isn't exactly brilliant, but certainly two of those three (Livingstone becoming an all-formats player for England and Evans testing positive for drugs) were unforeseen, and I'm definitely not one to blame them for that.

At least we are getting players to commit to full years' worth of play this year. I remember the Hurricanes especially seeming to trot out a new random every match last year.

P.s. - Ben Manenti is actually unironically good this year

Manenti has been an absolute rockstar this season. Hoping he carries that form over to the BBL.

I think the original point was that after all the hoopla over CA wanting big names to be playing in the tournament and gearing the draft system towards that, teams just prioritised picking the players who’d be most available rather than just the star names. Doesn’t particularly bode well for the image of the league although I suspect the BBL’s downfall is due to it’s length rather than anything to do with player quality.

Asif Ali and Faheem Ashraf will be there though.

So, I mentioned something a bit special... when I get the chance, I'll be covering BBL games live!

If the embed I'm trying here doesn't work, I'll be on Twitter at @TweetsBBL, and probably posting a summary of the Thunder-Stars game here.

So I caught the highlights of today's BBL game, and was shocked to see Beau Webster has turned himself into a seamer. And judging by the fact that his first three overs didn't even appear in the highlights, and that he was trusted to bowl the last over (and delivered a very good one), he's quite good at it. Fascinating development

Yeah. He normally wouldn't have got the 20th, but some creative Power Surge tactics forced the Stars to use their guns in the 18th and 19th. And he nearly pulled it out except for Joe Clarke.

It's just kinda weird though as I've always known him as someone who bowls dart off-breaks from a high action. Usually players transition in the opposite direction

Truly awful captaincy from Henriques this morning.

From an early stage, it was obvious that if you take the pace off the ball, it holds up in the pitch but he has had all his seamers bowl to a pace-on strategy (and hasn't called on himself or Dan Christian for pace-off cutters). And with that pace-on strategy, his bowlers have executed their plans pretty well, only to find out that the field has been set for a completely different plan. Look at Hayden Kerr - he just executed eight wide yorkers (two called as wides) but his over went for 13 because Henriques didn't give him a single boundary fielder behind square on the off side. For a wide yorker plan. Bonkers.

I'd also like to shout out Eloise Sheridan - standing with Bruce Oxenford today, she's the first female umpire in Aussie domestic history. Huge moment for diversity in cricket.

Be shocked if she doesn't umpire a Strikers win from here.

I think she's done a really good job - I've barely noticed her at all, which is the goal when you're umpiring
The umps have all day - the lineball LBW call with Matt Short is the only error so far

Sam Billings on the mics, when asked about how the Heat are going to turn it around: "We've got a bit of a different group this year - a few young guys, and Chris Lynn has obviously moved to the Strikers - so the main thing has been to build a good culture"

Seemingly confirming what I've been thinking - that Chris Lynn was a big driving force in the kamikaze approach we've seemed to take for the last few years
