Border-Gavaskar Trophy (India in Australia) Dec-Jan 2011/12

This is going to be a one-sided series. Warner's going to screw The Don in the face by scoring over 1573 runs at an average of 102.64 with a SR of 582.79 :thumbs

Exactly, this series is going to be one sided. David Warner who? No he is not a threat if Zak's fit he is Zak's bunny for sure. I am more scared of Ponting who likes to do well against India. Hussey is no threat too

On topic, I want Dougie to be replacing Starc and rest of the squad (except for Hughes) should stay the same.

There are a lot of "ifs" in both sides. I'm particularly excited to see how Yadav, Ashwin, Pattinson and Lyon go. Hopefully they lay the foundations for the next decade of the India-Australia rivalry. Would also be good if Zak/Ishant and Siddle/Bollinger fire up, and to be fair their lack of consistency is one of the biggest unknowns in the series.

What interests me is how the batting lineups will respond to the genuine pace and movement on offer from both camps. I do hope we have spicy pitches to provide some encouragement to the bowlers.

Not sure why Bollinger is the popular man of the day...sure he's on those increasingly annoying Vodafone ads, but the man hasn't played for the last month due to injury, and given his very famous 'fitness' issues of last summer, there is no chance he gets a call into the Aussie side without some good bowling under his belt. And since there is no FC cricket around, only Big Bash for the next few weeks I can't see how he's going to get that bowling he needs. I read he's going to play some grade cricket this weekend or something, but with Watson not able to bowl it would be a potentially very stupid call to get Bollinger back in straght away when he has to pull his weight in a team of only 4 bowlers. Because if Lyon gets targetted successfully, those 3 fast bowlers are going to need to bowl a LOT of overs...It also, BTW, makes bringing Harris in a very risky call too. Not just anti-Dougie here...:)

Selectors to have only one change, Watson in for Hughes, trying not to overreact to one loss. Because honestly, we don't want to go full Pakistan here eg. I read Bob Simpson wants Katich to come back and captain. And most other articles reckon Hughes, Khawaja, Haddin, Ponting and Starc should all be shot (but not Hussey for some reason...) Wait till Lyon gets 0/100 in the 1st Test he'll be out too. Maybe we should just pick a brand new XI after every loss :facepalm

I'm glad I'm not the only one getting aggravated by those ads :facepalm

Bollinger and Harris definitely need to prove their fitness before being given another shot. Supposedly Bollinger will play one of the 2-day games, but unless he tears India apart, I can't see him being selected.

I think Cowan's still in with a chance to replace Marsh/Khawaja, but at this stage I'd pick them both first.

Who's the alternative to Harris/Bollinger, though? Copeland? Those are the only two guys playing in tour games who you'd think would have a reasonable chance. After that you're back to the likes of George.

At least Bollinger/Harris are good when they're good.

Would be looking at another smokie after them. Hazlewood must be there abouts, falls into the Pattinson/Cummins category of being highly rated but hasn't quite got the great numbers to instantly force his way into the side.

I'm looking at Starc and Christian's first class numbers on cricinfo (CA's are slightly different) and I think there's plenty of guys who are equal or better. So, if they're in the mix with numbers like..

Starc - 19 games, 21 batting and 34 @ 3.55
Christian - 33 games, 30 batting and 35 @ 3.31

Then the following guys under 30 could be considered if they're fit:

Butterworth - 45 games, 28 batting and 24 @ 2.87
Faulkner - 20 games, 29 batting and 24 @ 3.09
Hazlewood - 11 games (a lot for a NSWelshman), 13 batting and 28 @ 3.04

Copeland, Magoffin, Hilfenhaus, McDonald, Hogan, Maher, Henriques, Putland, McKay, George (:p) all have strong first class numbers too. Why give up on McKay and George after 1 test each? Age is an issue for a couple of those guys though, thanks fried chickening Mitchell Johnson.
There's probably some others I'm overlooking too.

The sooner we get Hazlewood into the side, the better. But given that that's the case, why not play him in the tour game? I'm guessing they have a return from injury plan for him that precludes him from hitting the big time until the end of the season.

----------

Quick note on Christian - have heard that he looks much better in the advanced stats than he does in the normal ones. He takes difficult catches, stops runs in the field, makes runs/takes wickets at difficult times, etcetera.

----------

Quick note on Starc - picked more on potential than his numbers.

Should come as no surprise what the tour match was picked based on. Yep the BBL schedule! Hazlewood is with the Sixers and if you read the stories on Cowan you will know both of their games clash with the tour match.

----------

Faulkner - 20 games, 29 batting and 24 @ 3.09

If he had a hundred next to his name he could really be pushing for selection. He would then kill two birds with one stone in having a 5th bowling option and a left armer. Of course if we apply the bowling logic to the batting and say a 5fer = 100 then Pattinson and Cummins did not get their 5fer until test debut, in fact even Hauritz didn't achieve his first 5fer before his test debut. So in that sense you could throw him in and go on potential.

I mentioned this when Christian was picked, McDonald would be annoyed that this situation didn't occur last year where he was the Daniel Christian where his batting was killing it.

Not much love for Butters? 2 hundreds, 6 fifties.. eleven 4'fers, four 5'fers, bowling strike rate of 50.. Bowling average of 22.5 and 28 with the bat for the shield season?

Can't find any more detailed stats on Christian, but 35 catches in 33 matches isn't something I've seen from the other guys, so that does count for a bit.

Coulter-Nile and M. Marsh were two others I overlooked due to injuries. Bird and Lalor are on the watch list too after impressive starts.

----------

Basically, we've got a million and one bowlers and no tweaking batsmen.. or perhaps a batting average of 35 in shield cricket is the new 50 with all these guys killing it with the ball.

Butterworth would be handy too, but like Faulkner he looks to be more of a bowling all rounder at this stage.

One thing I've been thinking about is would the selectors ever punt on a raw batsmen like they have with Lyon and Cummins.

Christian and Butters seem to be too old to make a debut. Aus need to train some younger talent. For this same reason I believe Yuvraj should stop trying to be part of the test team.
