Border-Gavaskar Trophy (India in Australia) Dec-Jan 2011/12

I wouldn't mind us taking a bowling allrounder as a fifth bowler. Instead of part-timers bowling 10-15 overs, you've got a real bowler and your opposition are being dismissed for 20-30 runs less than they'd otherwise have made. Unless your sixth batsman can make up for the extra runs conceded by the part-time bowlers (ie by averaging 50+), IMO the bowling allrounder is usually the better pick.

I'm just not sure Butterworth and Faulkner have what it takes.

The big flaw I see in Christian selection is Haddin ain't performing well enough for us to be carrying Christian's batting. While he's in form, would he perform much better than Steven Smith because that would essentially be the role he will be in. Although given how our batting has been performing recently Christian can't do much worse.

If Christian can help us bowl India out for 350 instead of 380, then I don't care if he only makes 10 runs he's better than whoever gets dropped.

Butterworth would be handy too, but like Faulkner he looks to be more of a bowling all rounder at this stage.

One thing I've been thinking about is would the selectors ever punt on a raw batsmen like they have with Lyon and Cummins.

Yeah I'm looking to fill the 4th bowler role with these names I'm throwing out.
Rexy Butterworth/Jimmy Faulkner
Siddle
Pattinson
Lyon

Thinking about Maxwell for a raw batsmen? I wouldn't mind seeing him given a shot.

Christian and Butters seem to be too old to make a debut. Aus need to train some younger talent. For this same reason I believe Yuvraj should stop trying to be part of the test team.

With all the young bowlers stepping up at state level and now breaking into the national team, I don't mind a couple of 28 year olds making their debut. Batsmen on the other hand we really need to be pushing the youth and giving them experience in different kinds of test situations.

One of the things that worries me about the Aussie team atm is the tail appears to be too long. Siddle and Pattinson are honest battlers with the willow but against quality and intelligent bowling they won't last long. Australia were spoilt for so long having Warne and Lee coming in at 8 & 9 behind Gilchrist.

Given Australia's frailties in the middle order and Brad Haddin's bizarre habits this i believe is a real problem. Highlighting that perhaps some one like James Faulkner should be properly considered.

The day we don't have 7 good enough batsmen to play test cricket that we need to pick bowlers for their batting would be a sad day. Picking a number 8 because of his ability with the bat isn't the answer, you should be picking your 7 best batsmen/keeper/all-rounder then your 4 best bowlers. If those bowlers can bat then that's just an added bonus. Our batsmen were just terrible and most of them need to improve quickly or move on.

Made me think of something. Didn't Katich get the sack so they could build the partnership of Hughes and Watson? Isn't that just going along nicely.

The Tail is an interesting factor. The Tail for Australia can bat. But for some reason, Siddle and Johnson can easily reach 30/40runs but always gets ducks...

Also, is it weird that right now Australia are producing incredible bowlers and no batsman?? Are the bowlers good because the batsman are rubbish or are the Bowlers actually good making the batters average 30

This is where SOK would have come in handy. But yea I don't know why Faulkner wasn't given a go ahead of Starc. You could see he wasn't ready.

We are producing good batsmen, (Quiney, Cowan, Rogers, and some older ones D Hussey, Hodge, Katich) but the selectors insist on picking the same old middle order.

That's very true, but the fact of the matter is our current top 7 aren't good enough, particularly against the moving ball. They made Doug Bracewell look like Jimmy Anderson the other day. For whatever reason, they are consistently under performing. So why would you lengthen your tail when you know damn well your batsmen are struggling?

I am very unsure why we select young raw bowlers who have played 4 first class games yet we cant pick a batsman under the age of 30? I dont get it. Batsman get just as tired and drained as bowlers.

We need to pick the side that is in form, no taking sides, just pick the best team at the moment, no matter what age, if they are good for a summer then so be it, if the young kids are doing well, give them a chance, when they are not doing well send them to first class cricket, they should also all have county sides so they can stay in form over the winter.

So I say a batting average of no lower then 35 is required for the last 12 months.
For Australia
D. Warner - 76.50
S. Marsh - 56.80
M. Hussey - 43.11
M. Clarke - 35.72

State Cricket
Players who have played 3 matches and average over 50.
This season AVG (FC AVG, FC Matches)
P. Nevill - 67.43 (49.39, 18)
D. Christian - 59.38 (30.90, 33)
A. Voges - 58.83 (41.65, 110) 100.48
P. Forrest - 58.10 (36.31, 37) 95.14
G. Bailey - 50.50 (39.67, 78)
W. Townsend 50.20 (34.25, 27)
L. Davis - 56.38 (30.44, 24)
D. Hussey - 54.50 (54.84, 39) 109.34
E. Cowan - 54.13 (39.97, 55) 94.1

So our top 7 would look a little like this
Batting wise only.

D. Warner
E. Cowan
S. Marsh
M. Clarke
M. Hussey
A. Voges
P. Nevill

with P. Forrest and D. Hussey as reserves coz lets be honest no one like david hussey haha.

Bowling averages under 25, here are our options
J. Pattinson - 14.00
M. Hussey (lol) - 15.00
P. Cummins - 16.71
R. Harris - 19.04
S. Watson - 21.50
N. Lyon - 24.59

State Cricket
B. Cutting - 15.54
J. Bird - 18.17
S. Katich (lololol) - 20.50
M. Marsh - 20.92
G. Putland - 20.92
M. Hogan - 21.65
M. Cosgrove (our batsman are better at bowling) - 22.00
L. Butterworth - 22.50
I'll stop there.

So my bowling lineup will be
J. Pattinson
R. Harris
P. Cummins
N. Lyon

with Cutting, Marsh and Butterworth as replacements.

So our XI based on form AND career scores as a tie breaker, this is our best team
1. D. Warmer
2. E. Cowan
3. S. Marsh
4. M. Clarke
5. M. Hussey
6. A. Voges
7. P. Nevill
8. R. Harris
9. J. Pattinson
10. P. Cummins
11. N. Lyon

Now we need to get decent medical staff to keep these guys fit.'

Also my theory for why Domestic form hasnt been as good is because we started earlier and the pitches have been VERY green,

^^ Batsmen and bowlers need time to settle. If you select 28 yr olds, on an average they probably have 4-5 yrs left. Not much time IMO. All it takes is one injury to end a career (especially bowlers) Badrinath is an excellent domestic batsman with above 35 runs. Still he sucks everytime he gets an opportunity.

Almost every successful player you can think of started early - Sachin, Ponting, Ganguly, Shewag, Smith, Warne, Murali etc.

10 runs out of 65???:lol

yes, because they were extraordinarily talented.

but look at trott, hussey, gambhir (had played before but it was his recall in 2008 that he cemented his place)

bowlers are different, as I think they need more time to develop nuance, different conditions and fitness but I personally don't think batsmen should be playing test cricket if they're not capable of scoring more runs than their nearest competitor for their spot.

I'm serious, I think Jacques should be recalled, even if he only plays 3 years anyway, still potentially sorting out your batting until 2014-15 and 2 ashes series.

Hopeless, absolutely hopeless. As someone said, if Zaheer breaks down, Aravind might be the guy coming in instead of Pathan,

he..he...:D You and your big mouth :p Yesterday, in the Ranji Trophy game vs Punjab, S.Aravind walked off the field with a shoulder injury after bowling 13 overs. Today he didnt even take the field.
