Border-Gavaskar Trophy (India in Australia) Dec-Jan 2011/12

Khawaja, a class batsman can easily make runs. He just needs to get them somehow and build his confidence up.

if it was showing live, he would have been given out by third umpire.. :p
Ironically, in the televised BCCI prez XI tour match at Hyderabad in 2008, Yuvraj Singh basically managed to survive that exact situation, his bat wasn't grounded but the umpire didn't notice or something. Frustrating, but it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things.

Well, I would say in the end a day where job is done perfectly. Cowan has played superbly and Ashwin bowled pretty well. I see lot of Aussies getting in trouble with spin of Ashwin then Zaheer's swing(if he gets :p)

10 overs for Zaheer today + 59 overs of fielding. Although he should have bowled more say atleast 8-9 overs more but Dhoni relied on spin.

Kohli has just made himself in the XI with this knock. Rohit wont be getting a chance to debut.

He will want runs soon, as if Cowan gets in and makes runs and assuming Marsh and Warner do likewise then our future lineup could be:

Cowan
Warner
Marsh
Watson
Clarke
Number 6
Wade/Nevill

So really only leaves one spot in that lineup and I don't know how well Khawaja would go at 6. Some have suggested he should learn his trade from there which makes sense but he seems to have a weakness to spin, being clean bowled by Krejza from a doosra of sorts still stands out in my mind so in that regard he wouldn't be the greatest guy coming in at 6.

Super start to the tour by Ashwin. Touch wood, hope it continues....:yes Impressive game so far for India. I dont care if Zaheer didnt take wickets. He is warming up into the tour, and also exposing him too much to the Aussies is not a good idea.

Cowan was about 1-2 yard short of crease.. grounded kind of incident happened in Big Bash also and it was fault of fielders who didn't appeal. if i remember same thing happened in that hyderabad match also, where fielders didn't appeal strongly.

In cowan case, it was not fault of umpire as cowan ran behind him and he couldn't see his bat where it was. He played well for 95 and deserves little bit of luck. I hope Australian selectors pick him for first test against india.

but anyway it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things

I really hope Khawaja and Warner will be there for the test, but if Marsh or Watson aren't fit for boxing day, should really give Cowan a chance.

Utter madness, this is Andrew McDonald 2008/09 all over. Its ludicrous to try and pick a bits and pieces 5th bowler to play in such a role while weakening the otherwise fragile top 6 while doing so.

Of course the IND batting is strong and of course its legitimate concern to worry about the bowling attacks depth if Watson cant bowl, but England and West Indies recently showed that IND line-up is ageing and vulnerable these days and most certainly can be contained.

So I much rather in the absence of Watson's bowling, that the selectors and coach back the 3 quicks + Lyon to do a job, instead of wasting time picking Christian.

Plus also seeing what ENG did to IND in the summer means AUS should be trying to make sure the MCG & SCG pitch is as pace bowler friendly as possible.

Squad will be announced in 4.5 hours on Fox Sports.

Fox Sports said:
Ed Cowan and Shaun Marsh are set for Boxing Day call-ups today at the expense of the unlucky Usman Khawaja and the out-of-sorts Phil Hughes.

And Ben Hilfenhaus is shaping as a fast bowling bolter in an extended 13-man squad that is not expected to include Ryan Harris or Shane Watson, both of whom are returning from injury.

Hilfy hasn't exactly been tearing it up the last month, but at least he's been fit and I'd prefer him over Bollinger, Harris and Starc at this stage.

^Yah I think that's the key thing, Hilfy can bowl all day. Bollinger and Harris have question marks over whether they can. If Christian doesn't play, they will need their 4 main bowlers to really work hard. Huss can surprise the odd batsman, but I don't really want to see him bowling too much...

He looks alright against the spinners certainly wouldn't call it a weakness yet as we don't have enough data. However he managed to make a 100 in SL long before a spinner got him and he had no problem taking apart Harris on his way to his back to back 100s in his 2nd test. He has been getting out to them but at times it was through being aggressive, so as I mentioned just not enough data to suggest this.

Yeah Hughes never gets through the new ball to face spin :D In the past I've suggested he should have been at #6 to ease him into Test cricket and I think it was based on what I saw of him vs Kaneria at the SCG a couple of years ago, willing to use his feet against spin which to me is a sign that you're confident against them. Sure he ended up holing out, but I saw glimpses there. I don't think he used his feet quite as much in SL, but I missed most of his batting over there.

well, when I saw the match in sri lanka, yeah he scored a hundred but that innings was littered with slogs against the spinners and they did trouble him when they started, there was more than one poke and misjudgement of length there. he got out slogging across the line in another match as well. it's not what a good player of spin does imo.

still, he's only hit 2 fifties in 26 innings since that debut series so fair enough, I guess it would probably easy enough to make any case against him right now.

But Australia also can't bat on green pitches anymore.

Lol at Sehwag again failing :p Also Ajinkya Rahane has just showed he is Khwaja type of batsman big at domestic and yet to be proven in FC international matches :p

Rohit Sharma being sent early still shows the possibility of him getting picked
