Rameez Raja:A very good morning to all our viewers across the world! Welcome to the Bagh-e-Jinnah Ground at Lahore where we are going to see the Patron's XI take on the mighty West Indies in a 2-day warm-up match in preparation of the Bank Alfalah Test Series.
It's a mild day here in Lahore today and the pitch is looking dry and dusty. Such a track should aid the batsmen reasonably well, but the spinners will play some part in the game as well. We are just about to get started and news from the ground is that Hasan Raza has won the toss for the Patron's XI and decided to bat first.
Now let's take a quick look at the line-ups before play gets underway:
PATRONS XI:
1. Yasir Hameed

3. Hasan Raza (Captain)

5. Saeed Bin Nasir
6. Farhan Adil
7. Moin Khan (WK)

10. Ifthikar Anjum
11. Fazl-e-Akbur

Rameez Raja: And here come the two teams. They certainly look fired up!
The West Indians come out onto the field, hoping to get some early breakthroughs.
Rameez Raja: Butt and Hameed are of course hoping to impress the selectors by playing good knocks here and thus find themselves in the Pakistani XI that will face the West Indies in the first Test Match next week. On the other hand, pacemen Lawson and Best will be looking to knock a few batsmen over early and get into the flow of things- This is also their opportunity to force their way into the final XI ahead of budding bowler Jerome Taylor, who is not included in today's side. PATRONS XI: 0/0
Rameez Raja: The match started in earnest and straight away the West Indian bowlers hammered the ball into the pitch in an attempt to unsettle the batsmen. Yasir Hammed in particular was looking very uncomfortable against the short ball and as a result was struck hard by a bouncer from Lawson. It seemed very painful, and Hameed stayed on the ground for a few moments, but luckily no damage was done and he resumed his innings.
PATRONS XI: 0/1
Rameez Raja: Gone! Lawson makes the early breakthrough that the West Indies were looking for as he dismisses Yasir Hameed for a duck! First blood to the Windies!
Rameez Raja: To be brutally honest, Hameed was looking quite uneasy at the crease. Lawson had just bowled a few bouncers at him, including one that had hit him quite badly, and after that Hameed's body language was all wrong; he was looking very shaken and almost scared of the short ball. The ball that dismissed him was, to be fair, quite a corker but Hameed had terrible shot selection there. I'd like to know if he has any justification for not playing at an inswinging ball!
Day One. 11:30 AM
Rameez Raja: Despite losing a wicket without a run on the board, the Patron's XI weren't fazed and started playing positive cricket against the West Indian pacemen.
PATRON'S XI: 5/1
Rameez Raja: Unlike Hameed, who perished, Salman Butt decided to go after the bowlers and not allow them to intimidate him. A series of beautiful shots followed as Butt got his eye in and punished any loose balls.
PATRON'S XI:10/1
Rameez Raja: The pair quickly settled at the crease and went about scoring at a steady rate. After initial movement off the pitch, it became considerably easier for the batsmen to play the ball and score runs frequently.
PATRON'S XI: 18/1
Rameez Raja: Butt looked more and more confident as he got settled and soon he was playing very elegantly, with daring pulls and flashy cover drives. This young man is certainly sending a strong message to the selectors!
PATRON'S XI: 25/1
Rameez Raja:Pretty soon Hasan Raza joined in the fun as well. The West Indian bowling attack was pretty mediocre, and the two Pakistanis made full use of the opportunity. Stray balls were punished to all parts of the ground, and soon the momentum of the game shifted back to the Patron's XI.
PATRON'S XI: 33/1
Day One. 12:00 PM Rameez Raja: Salman Butt and skipper Hasan Raza have made up for the early loss by forging a solid partnership that has seen their team out of trouble. Coming together at the crease when the score was at nought, they have battled hard and are now cruising towards the 50 mark.
PATRON'S XI: 42/1
Rameez Raja: After the initial breakthrough, the West Indian bowlers have done little to upset the batsmen. To be fair though, this looks like quite a good batting track and after a team can see off the new ball, they are definitely set to make a big score. PATRON'S XI: 50/1
Rameez Raja: Brian Lara, realizing that his pacemen were of little use of such a track, decided to take the gamble and bring on spinner Omari Banks. At first Banks kept the batsmen at bay but then Butt decided to let loose and went after the ball, playing some terrific shots on both sides of the wicket!
PATRON'S XI: 58/1
Rameez Raja: Butt was now in full flow, and no bowler was safe from his flashy drives and delicate sweeps. He raced to his 50, and raised his bat in appreciation of the applauding Lahore crowd.
PATRON'S XI: 65/1
Salman Butt sends a strong message to the selectors by scoring a crucial 50.
Rameez Raja: At the other end, Raza was patiently trudging along, giving the strike to Butt whenever possible. However there was a quiet determination about his innings; although he wasn't as classy or flashy as Butt, his technique was as impressive and his shot selection bettered by none.
PATRON'S XI: 69/1
Rameez Raja: The pair continued to punish the West Indies as Butt kept moving along at a steady rate and Raza accelerated his innings as he too moved towards his 50. The bowlers had now gone into a more defensive mood, and were more concerned about stopping the runs than taking wickets. Lara knew that someone had to break this partnership soon!
PATRON'S XI: 73/1
Salman Butt and Hasan Raza build a big partnership to frustrate the West Indians.
Rameez Raja: Hasan Raza has played a magnificent captain's knock here at the Bagh-e-Jinnah Ground. He has given solid support to Butt, and has steadily accelerated his own innings.
Rameez Raja: With spinner Banks operating at one end, Raza took full advantage of the mediocre bowling and sprang to life, cutting and sweeping to all parts of the ground. And with a hard sweep that sent the ball to the boundary and brought up the skipper's well-deserved 50. What a great knock for the Patron's XI!
Day One. 12:30 PM Rameez Raja: Salman Butt and Hasan Raza have switched gears now and the Patron's are simply racing along now. No bowler has been able to contain them and we are witnessing a run-feast here at the Bagh-e-Jinnah Ground!
PATRON'S XI: 81/1
Rameez Raja: Raza in particular was on fire now, as he drove, cut and pulled the ball to the boundary. After a few expensive overs, Banks was taken off and paceman Best brought back on in an attempt to stem the run flow.
PATRON'S XI: 86/1
Rameez Raja: The plan did work to a certain extent, as the runrate did indeed slow down- But the batsmen refused to be bogged down at the crease and continued to rotate the strike to keep the scoreboard ticking along.
PATRON'S XI: 99/1
Rameez Raja: The pair were totally dominating now and brought up the 100 for the Patron's XI in no time. Brian Lara was almost out of ideas and seeing these two batsmen dictate the match was not the best of preparations for the West Indies! In a last ditch effort, Lara told his bowlers to revert back to bowling bouncers at the pair and hope to get one of them out with a good ball!
WINDIES MAKE VITAL BREAKTHROUGH!
PATRON'S XI: 129/2
Rameez Raja: And then out of nowhere- Smith strikes for the Windies! What a beautiful outswinger and dangerman Salman Butt is sent on his way! Butt is a compulsive driver of the ball and after some flashy strokes this has led to his downfall. After facing some short deliveries, he was caught totally unawares by the fuller delivery and drove at it too late, thus producing the thick edge and Ramdin made no mistake behind the stumps to snatch the chance.
Rameez Raja: Nothing should be taken away from Butt though; he played a terrific innings and because of his good form he really is a prospect in the final XI in the upcoming Test Match. A lot of pressure was on him after the first wicket fell, but he stuck together at the crease with Raza and played a superb knock. Unlucky to get out for 72!
Asim Kamal comes out to bat at No.4 with his team in a stable position.
Rameez Raja: As soon as Asim Kamal came to the crease, the West Indians were onto him. Gayle wasted no time in making comments to him in between deliveries and Smith and Best continuously bowled short balls at him in an attempt to intimidate him. Even Lara, who is normally a very calm and quiet character on the field, joined in the sledging and mocked Kamal, who had still hadn't got off the mark.
Rameez Raja: However, Kamal kept his cool and decided to do his talking through his cricket- The very next ball he hit Best for a four! That was enough to stop the gloating West Indians.
