Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

Yes. Besides Chelsea werent particularly comprehensive in their last two games were they? And nine time winners they arent too.

Super goal by Drogba nevertheless and how he and Lampard were both free, beats me. Bayern were really impressive, and am really happy for Luca Toni getting those two goals at the end. A true legend.

Nine time champions we are, for a reason you know.
Not really going to count for a lot now though is it. You really don't have too many "awesome players". The midfield and strikers look poor (especially with Ruud injured), Cannavaro is ageing and Heinze is poor. Awful performance tonight, and I'd say your recent efforts in La Liga may be more to do with the standard of that league than anything else.

It's a bit of a worry how dominant the English clubs have been this week. It might all go tits-up in two weeks time but for all the talk of Real and Inter, Juventus etc being brilliant teams they've all looked very ordinary.
We'd never have talked about a draw away against the Serie A champions as disappointing in the past or only beating Roma 1-0 at home.
Obviously I'd like the English clubs to progress and I suspect all hell will break lose in Italy if Roma, Juve and Inter all go out in the first knockout round. Bottom line based on this week's evidence though is that the EPL is extending the gap rather than others closing it.
Absolutely true. I don't think I've ever seen more abject performances from the teams outside of England. Inter were poor, Madrid were poor, didn't see the Juve or Roma games but they both lost to English sides. These aren't all sides that are doing well in England as well, Arsenal are 5th, Chelsea have struggled and even Liverpool recently have dipped in form.

I think I'm right in saying Bayern will have played well as they won 5-0 away from home, but even they're struggling in their domestic league.

The gap between England and the rest is getting bigger, no question about that.

Stop it stop it stop it stop it stop it.

Are you asking for us to be knocked out.

stop it.

I haven't been this nervous about game in ages. Since Moscow. and that night I was off my face so I could kill the nerves. In rather fantastic news I have the house to myself on this years champions league final so regardless of who's playing (hope to god it's united again :D) I will be having a rather topping time.

However Zlatan and Mourinho are worrying me.

Number 4 on my birthday would be brilliant:D.

However, I'd take not getting through against Inter if it meant we beat the dippers at home 3 days later. The number 18 this year would mean everything (as long as of course, them lot don't win the European Cup). I might get a bit more nervous nearer the time Joe, but at the moment, I can't help thinking just how poor they were last night, and how poor Ibrahimovic has been every single time I've seen him play.

Inter had their chances too. But then its about scoring in the end, and neither did.

Anyways on to the big game now. Our tactic in recent games has worked wonderfully but we obviously do not have Huntelaar for this game. Still with Guti and Robben back to full fitness, we would have probably never played all three strikers anyways. I hope Ramos sticks with Marcelo as well because he has been brilliant.

Torres, Gerrard (if fit) and probably Alonso are the main threats. Reina is good between the sticks, but the form we are in at the moment I would be really surprised if we did not score.

Cracking game nevertheless, second only to us against AC Milan I think. This is what European football is really about. Not the rubbish Atletico showed yesterday.

Also a special day for Ranieri to come back to Stamford Bridge. Mourinho was a better manager, but Ranieri more than did his job while at Chelsea.

'The' big game, eh? Well, that fell flat on its face! As for Inter's chances, you could've counted them on the fingers of one hand...

Yes please.

Perhaps a fair ref would help the cause as well.

He is a horrible referee. Very annoying and he keeps getting picked for the El Classico games as well, so its even more annoying.

Absolutely. A fair ref would've helped the cause of us having a clear penalty when Berbatov was being manhandled in the box! :p

Thats what Berbatov deserves. Players should be honoured with medals for mishandling him in the future.

Madrid are just absolutely woeful. They defended like Sunday Leaguers yesterday. Awful team.

Why? Because he plays for 'Manure'? Grow up.

Sounds like 'The Special One's' defence is screwed then. He's got three centre backs out, or something like that.

Liverpool outplayed us. Completely and congratulations to them. The second goal might have been lucky and might have killed the game, but you have to give credit where its due and Liverpool played brilliantly. Instead of sitting back and defending their lead they kept on attacking.

But we are still the nine time european champions, and the nearest side, AC Milan, are not even in the competition, so until someone comes to number 9, I am more than happy. After all, we are the Club of the Century!

Looking at the positives, we have fewer games to play in the season, and the game against the terrorists is up next. Victory against the Basques will be a victory for Espana!
