Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

Yes it was!:D

Not sure, with the confidence last night will have got us and the knowledge that 3 more wins gets us the league we should be up for it. However, city usually up their game against us and with them wanting to dent our bid for the title, they'll probably play like Brazil. I think we'll win it though:).

Not as long as you have to wait to win your next one though (if at all you win one).

Ha ha! That comment's looking a bit stupid now, eh? Real Madrid: a shambles. Out of the CL and murdered by Barca. Man Utd: In the final of the CL. Hmm, I wonder who's more likely to win the CL sooner...

Unlucky, Chelsea!!!!!! :D :D :D :D

If we beat City then Wigan, we more or less have it in the bag. We'd need to lose against Arsenal at Old Trafford (yeah, right) and Hull away on the last day and Liverpool's goal difference would need to be superior in order for them to snatch it.

City will be a really tough game, they've hit top form recently.

Barca are not overrated, they just knocked out Chelsea, doesn't matter how but they did. They beat a Bayern Munich side coming off a 31-1 aggregate win with ease. They will be our toughest game by far.

City haven't been too good away from home though, have they?

Edit: Surely you mean a 3-1 Aggregate, not 31-1!!!! :)

I'm not saying that Barca will be easy, I'm merely saying that they're not the invincible team everyone was making them out to be.

Edit: Check out Guardiola!

'Manchester (United) are the champions, an unbelievable team and a coach with experience. We are going to prepare well. I know they are a huge team, but we are Barcelona.'

Yes, Pep, and we are Man Utd. The World and European Champions and the team that removed you from the tournament last year.

Form goes out of the window in derby games.

Nothing wrong with what Guardiola said and I meant a 13-1 aggregate score.

I watched the whole of last night's game and I have a few points to say:

  • Chelsea were shafted, plain and simple. They should have had 2 penalties. The Drogba (although he dived at the end) and the handballl by Pique which was so incredibly blatant.
  • I didn't want Chelsea going through. A team with no history winning the CL before us with their fans would be hard to take. Plus, they defended for 180 minutes. They claimed circumstances forced them to do it at the Camp Nou which is fair enough but to do it at home is anti-football.
  • Drogba, Anelka and Belletti all kept diving. To be fair to Belletti, it was to win free-kicks and waste time but Anelka and Drogba are claiming blatant penalties while diving at the same time.
  • Michael Ballack's attack on the referee was plain funny.
  • How bad did the Barca defence have to be to keep getting caught like that?
  • Yaya Toure basically did everything defensively for Barca.
  • Adebayor could learn a few lessons from Drogba on how to make a nuisance of himself, hold the ball up, win headers, etc. All except his diving.
  • Ronaldo was brilliant against us and Messi was almost non-existant against Chelsea but the thing to remember is Ronaldo faced 3 defenders at most while Messi had to find a way past at least 8 Chelsea players.
  • 'He's a f***king disgrace!'
  • Lastly, in the last few weeks, MasterBlaster has either become very excited or just incredibly arrogant.

  • EDIT: Oh, yeah, and if Fletcher's ban gets overturned, it will be ridiculous. He was unlucky but it's happened before. Just because he plays for United doesn't mean the rules should be bent. It's pathetic.

Agreed with both of those points there to be honest.

Gonna be very tough on Sunday, make no mistake City will be up for it big time. There's nothing they'd like better, and I mean nothing, than stopping us winning the title.

As for Guardiola, he was pretty outgoing in his praise for us there to be honest. He's hardly going to say that they're beaten and might as well give up there and then, is he?

Will, I see what you're saying, but wouldn't you rather common sense prevail? At least the scousers can't complain if it does happen (which is pretty unlikely anyway) as the rules were changed so they could be in the competition in 2005/06.

It would be common sense to bring Fletcher back but it would also be common sense to bring Abidal back so not overly fussed.

Get them both back. They were both incorrect decisions. I still can't believe that you can't appeal against a red card.

People are seriously suggesting a years ban? That's ridiculous, doubt it'll happen anyway. Just slap Drogba and Ballack with 3 game bans and be done with it I think. Bosingwa's lucky he's got some pretty good advisors too, he needed that apology today after virtually accusing the ref of being corrupt last night.

If Chelsea get the one year European ban the media are speaking of, Everton would go into the qualifying stage for the Champions League. Believe!

Don't ever, ever believe anything written in the media.
