Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

Ye Hart's form is becoming a worry.

Yeah the way Joe Hart is playing Forster could be playing the WC qualifiers.

Despite his obvious poor form I still can't see Hodgson dropping Hart, doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who has the balls to drop a big name player from the team.

I agree with you on Forster though, he was very impressive last night and has been for some time.

would be funny if barca decided to look at him to replace Valdes, he'd make his transfer then all of a sudden become the number 1 without even having to play a game.

oh milan :facepalm

just noticed that Gabriel obviously wasn't included in the CL squad (presumably because the goalies make up our home grown quota) his performances in the last few games were making me think this season might have some bright spots afterall. I thought he was just some random guy they bought but he's been great when given the chance.

Dortmund were immense at the start and after that organised themselves well. Trademark counterattack for the winner, they've finally shaken off that loss to Napoli on the opening day.

I think they are through. I can't see them losing to us at Signal Iduna Park, at worst it'll be a draw for them.

Luckily we have Crystal Palace next to get back on track then Chelsea and Liverpool, if we win those it'll put us high on confidence for the next game (though I think we'll lose to Chelsea).

That was a world class bit of play by Rooney - such a shame it hit the post! Still, at least it eventually ended up in the net. We could really do a number on this team tonight; they are all over the place.

Seems that we're a completely different team in the CL than the EPL at the moment. :lol

What is going on United! Surely the team that has disappointed the most this year so far. :facepalm

I dunno what's wrong with united, they should have had about 6 tonight but the fact they only won 1-0 should still raise alarm bells. the defense still looks prone to collapsing without any notice and why the sod won't anyone persevere with Kagawa?

yes, moyes being an astute european operator and a bit of a disaster in the EPL against small teams is surely the last thing anyone expected.

They aren't playing well in the Champions League either, they are just lucky their opponents were are awful. Bayer Leverkusen had their worst game of the season against Man Utd and Real Sociedad have had an awful start to the season worse than Man Utd.

They got lucky that their opponents just aren't up for it. Lucky for them they should have qualification sewn up in the next couple of rounds. Shakhtar at home shouldn't be a problem and neither should Real Sociedad even if it's away. They will get their arses handed to them by Leverkusen though.

I was expecting a bit of a stuttering start, but nothing this bad.

It's bewildering. And yeah, we should've won that 3-0 at the very minimum. The fear factor of going to Old Trafford is fast dissipating - and instead it's leaking into the team itself. Moyes has not done himself any favours by throwing out almost the entire coaching structure of the club. Too much has been changed.

Not to say that Moyes won't eventually come good, but going by the start, I think the way to go should've been to get a Mourinho or Hiddink in, with Moyes as No.2. Let him learn the ropes at Man Utd under a manager who has done it at the top level. Obviously, we're in for a transitional year or two - but two seasons is the absolute maximum I'd be prepared to give Moyes. If we don't get this turned around by then, we could well do a Liverpool.

^That to with an own goal..

Who cares? We fully deserved to win, and Rooney's play leading up to the OG deserved a goal.

They will get their arses handed to them by Leverkusen though.

Didn't exactly work out that way at Old Trafford...

The pitch truly was horrendous, but worst of all, the racist chants:

Yaya Toure calls for UEFA must act over 'stupid' chants - ESPN FC

:facepalm

Yeah, and they're getting the World Cup in 2018. early Septembering Fifa morons.

'Early Septembering' - is that the best the forum can do by way of a swear filter? :lol

I think you'll agree Leverkusen were absolutely awful at Old Trafford, they just weren't up for it. That was by far their worst performance this season, let's not forget they are third in the Bundesliga and having by far a better season than Man Utd. A Man Utd on top form would have some trouble negotiating them away from home, this team is going to be overwhelming underdogs there.

Leverkusen should've beaten you at Old Trafford as well, that's how they've been playing this season in comparison to you guys, that was just an awful, awful performance though so they got crushed.

People like to underestimate Bundesliga for some reason it seems. The top teams are a lot stronger than the best English teams, that's obvious, and teams like Schalke and Leverkusen are quality sides.
