Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

Arsenal actually did well there , Ozil got unlucky and Neuer was awesome. The change which Pep did of bringing in Rafinha for Boateng was actually the key for Bayern's success , Rafinha just increased their attacking spirits. Well done Pep. :thumbs

We did well until Ozil missed his penalty, he was probably the main reason for us doing well at that point along with Sanogo and Wilshere as Cazorla and Oxlade-Chamberlain looked asleep. After the miss he faded and so did the others, Oxlade-Chamberlain did improve though. When Szczesny was sent off, that lowered our spirits further and the advantage it gave Bayern in numbers is what spurred them on and get them the goals.

Our team was knackered by the end of the game due to having only ten players. Had Szczesny not been wrongly sent off, it wouldn't have been more than 1-0 to Bayern.

I don't agree with the rules as they are now, but as things stand, that was a red card and a penalty.

can't agree there don, it's not like he just knocked the ball on just to keep it away from the goalie, he brought it down under control. I think sagna chased it down before it went out of play and sagna was about 10 yards behind robben. if Szczesny doesn't take him out he's passing that into the open net.

I don't discount that he probably would've hit it straight in after beating Szczesny, the rule though is it has to be towards the goal when it's that sort of distance. He wasn't going towards the goal, his direction was roughly halfway in between the goal and the corner flag.

Hmm as someone who whole heartedy hates Bayern, that was a pen and a sending off for me.

EDIT: Would also point out the fact Muller was brought down late in the game in an identical manner to the one Boateng got penalised for bringing down Ozil, and no pen was given in Muller's case.

Gibbs' injury proved costly for you guys, Monreal had a bit of a shocker, which was surprising, considering he was mightily impressive against Liverpool in the weekend FA Cup win.

Monreal is terrible. Defensively he's nowhere near Gibbs, what he is meant to offer is a better attacking threat. He hasn't even been doing that. His fatal flaw is his lack of pace.

He will be a back-up to Gibbs and nothing more. A shame, as I wanted him to do well. I wouldn't be surprised if he's sold in the next couple of windows to bring in a younger back-up who will push Gibbs more.

I don't agree on that. for a start, Szczesny (whose bloody name I have to check the spelling of every time I write it) denied an open goal, and then the penalty is missed. given how likely a keeper is of getting a yellow card in a game that's almost a license to foul someone. anyone would take that bet. look at the suarez incident in the world cup where he handballed it, that's a goal he denied, not a goal scoring opportunity. they (ghana?) then went on to miss the penalty, suarez staying on would amount to a clear advantage.

the only thing that needs looking at is the suspension rule, because it is too harsh. players get sent off for mistakes, or over-zealous refereeing. I think if they are going to redress the balance a bit then the best move would be to relax the suspension rule.

Suarez was just plain cheating, that's the difference with that incident. An intentional handball like that, in the box too, should always be red.

I think the first thing that needs to be done is the game needs competent (unlike Germany) and unbiased (unlike England) referees.

same result though.

I argued a line similar to this when a lot of people were getting annoyed about Broad not walking during the ashes. the intention should be irrelevant, all that matters is the result. both players denied a goal with a foul in the area, ergo off you go.

as I said before, the other problem is yellows for goalies almost never happen, occassionally for time-wasting but he'll never recieve a second yellow to get sent off (I'd imagine it has happened once, as nearly everything has) so a yellow for a goalkeeper is almost like not being punished at all. yellow's are only punishments to battling midfielders that get stuck in and defenders who have to deal with a pacey wingers running at them. no one cares about them otherwise and you only get sent off if you're a complete idiot in any other circumstance.

Szczesny getting a yellow and bayern getting, then missing, the penalty is the total opposite of a triple punishment, it's absolutely no punishment at all.

No matter how crap this current team is, there was enough quality in it to beat Olympiakos. There is something terribly wrong at the club, Moyes is way out of his depth, and the players don't want to play for him.

For the record, I do think that there's a massive rebuild required, just don't think Moyes is the right man for it, as it will probably be like Kenny Dalglish's second spell at Liverpool- money in the wrong hands.

Moyes needs sacking. Giggs to take over till the end of the season and then Klopp in the summer.

I do see the problem with the goal keeper situation if he doesn't get sent off there, and it essentially becomes a penalty instead of an open shot on goal + a yellow card, but I just hate the red card + penalty, both together seems over the top for 1 mistimed tackle inside the box.

More chance of signing Kroos, by that I mean there's no chance in hell. :p
