Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

Agree with Drew. Liverpool were pretty average at best tonight. Porto played well up untill they conceeded that second goal! Then the flood gates opened! Tough trip to Marseille next for the scouse! Don't let their league position fool you though. A good side, and won't be easy to win there.

Yer, and we got United at home straight after. We still gotta win though because of head-to-head  if we play our best team we should win. And maybe that team involves Crouch and Kewell.

I don't mind if Liverpool win because I reckon if they win we will beat them on the saturday but it will be tough. Out of the sides that played yesterday I only think Milan, Chelsea and possibly Madrid are capable of going all the way

If Liverpool make it to the next round, you can surely add them to the list. Despite the blip this season, they still are a good team in Europe.

Madrid were crap against Bremen though, but I guess, that happens. Van Nistelrooy missed an absolute sitter!

not bothered aboutthe scousers tonight because if they go out i reckon beat us and if they don't I don't think they will. Plus I don't think they can do it because their still inwith a chance in th league and they've not had to go for the league and the CL yet which is a hell of a lot harder. Madrid outstanding, its their away form that makes you doubt them though. Rooney captain tomorrow and the youth turn up.

I wouldn't have risked Rooney, but oh well, I guess he's fresh after coming back from injury.

Joe, it doesn't work like that! Come on Marseille for this second half, get the two goals and knock the scousers out of europe!:p ITV are so biased towards the English teams, it was a definite penalty yes, but I'm actually not so sure it was a red card. There were defenders coming back in to the centre of the box, and Gerrard was at quite a tight angle. Good goal by Torres for the 2nd.

 What have you go against Kewell? :(

I said maybe our best team should have Kewell in...he's been excellent tonight though

I think it was probably a red because Gerrard used to score from their all the time, now he gets penalties :p, but that same guy two footed Benayoun a minute later, that warrants a red.

Flipping hell, didn't think it would be this easy. They have had the ball a lot but our defence just stops every attack they throw at us. With Torres on I reckon 3 or 4 is easily possible!

I think we need to bolster the team in key positions with some more experienced squad players. Not our first team players, but some experienced squad players, otherwise the kids could be embarrassed by Roma and that won't do their development any good at all.

I'm not worried about the weekend, even after 'pool's display. It's my experience that if a team is on fire during a midweek European game, they fare less well at the weekend. I mean the amount of times I've seen that happen to Utd!

Man Utd should play a team entirely of English players tonight. There has been a lot of talk about foreign players in English teams lately and with nothing riding on the game they could experiment. They could have the best foreigners on the bench as back up.

To be honest, I dont think I'm that bothered if we get beat tonight or by how many as long as we don't have any new injuries. I'm suprised Rooney's going but apart from that its the squad I thought of. We've got some experience with Carrick and Brown in the squad.

Total scum. Not only are their fans pathetic so are the police, you would never get this in England. They arrested 2 English fans no doubt for defending themselves and to make it look like its not all their fault. Roma should be chucked out of Europe forever. If this was an English club they would have been out years ago, they don't deserve CL football. Platini wants smaller clubs in, well heres your opportunity. I just hope the rest of our fans get out of their ok but thats about as likely as Rangers winning the champions league. How the police didn't stop this I don't know but to be honest I could police the game better than the entire Italian police force

Anyway....
Solid result, remain unbeaten and g through group winners despite various injurys and playing the second string in the last game. 2 in 2 for Pique! quality from our mainly second string so far. Coventry>>Roma. I want to see Madrid Arse in the next round, would make for great football. Nani and Carrick have been quality as well as Rooney whos been everywhere, hes a proper captain.

I really suggest everyone checks out Alexs screamer too
