South Africa collapsed to 176 in 41st over in the first match of Coca Cola Tri series at Eden Park, Kolkatta. After winning the toss Indian captain S. Ganguly elected to field first, which wasn't a wrong decision. G. Smith and his partner started off well, but once they departed the middle order started to feel under pressure. The runs weren't coming easily, so the batsmen had to play their shots to keep the run rate high, but it didn't work for them. The top order failed against the Indian left arm seamer A. Nehra, who took 4 wickets and ended up with the figures, 10-0-40-4. Kemp was the only top scorer on South African side, 33. He got out when he hit the ball beautifully for six against Sehwag but caught few inches ahead the rope by Yuvraj Singh. Harbhajan came in very last few overs to bowl and he picked up 3 wickets. So that was the South African inning and India need 177 off 50 overs at run rate of 3.54 per over to win the first match of the tournament.
