Smith & Gibbs hurry South Africa close to victory

Smith & Gibbs hurry South Africa close to victory

Graeme Smith and Herschelle Gibbs seem to be in a hurry to finish things off as South Africa look overwhelming favorites to win this match in a comprehensive fashion. South Africa are 55/0 after 6 overs in a period of stunning strokeplay that has left the Indian bowlers breathless! It was a totally spineless bowling performance from the Indians who failed to pressurize the South Africans. Harbhajan and Tendulkar were introduced in the 2nd and the 3rd over respectively to take advantage of any spin on the track but both Smith and gibbs took heavy toll of them.

The few blemishes for the South Africans when Smith played an ugly swipe and was plumb in front to Harbhajan. But the umpire thought otherwise! Gibbs also missed the ball a few times enroute to the keeper but luckily was safe and still playing out there.

India will need a flurry of wickets now to get back into this game! At this rate, South Africa will win this match in a very easy fashion!

Mid-Match Interview - Greg Chappell

As the match is going on, Planetcricket caught up with Greg Chappell for a brief interview

CHAPPELL ON INDIAN CRICKET!

sp%20(3).jpg

*Do you still think India can win this match?

Its still possible for India to win here! They probably gave away easy runs to the South Africans but a few quick wickets can completely change the complexion of the game!

*After all recent rather ugly happenings, do you think Indian cricket is on the right path?

Recent happening, though unfortunate, have been put aside and full concentration is on the work ahead! The team is hungry to win and are confident of themselves! I am sure it wont take much time before they start winning, and win consistently!

*What basic changes have you made with this team?

My goals are - discpline, fitness and mental toughness. The De Bono thinking theory is being implemented, the boys are being put through rigorous fitness sessions and they are sweating it out at the nets working on their game!

*Recently we had some complaint that some of the boys were not comfortable with your workout regimen?

I dont know how far its true because I have not had anybody come up and say to me! But to be the best, you have to sacrifice something. You have to come out of your comfort zones. Thats what I am trying to do with this team!

*Well, Saurav Ganguly is dropped now for this tournament? What do you think about his future with Indian cricket?

Nothing is over yet for Saurav. No one needs to point out his performances which are laudable! We are grooming youngsters now but that doesnt mean we will ignore senior players with cricketing experience! Saurav should work hard on his game and can definitely make a strong comeback!

Heart breaking defeat for India!

South Africa romp home by 10 wickets

sawin4ki.jpg

It was the worst possible defeat margin for India as South Africa romped home to victory by the 16th over with all wickets intact. The chief architects for this resounding win for South Africa were Graeme Smith and Herschelle Gibbs who remained unbeaten till the end and gave South Africa a victory that would boost their confidence no end! Smith was not out on 59 while Gibbs was the top scorer with 63*

It was a poor game for India who had nothing going right for them. To start with, they continuously lost wickets at regular intervals and never quite got the total they wanted! And secondly, their bowling was utter listless in their first match of the tournament. Harbhajan and Tendulkar bowled a chunk of the overs before being beaten comprehensively by the South Africans.

Presentation Ceremony

Jones: Welcome to the presentation ceremony of the match between India and South Africa. First of all, I would like to invite the losing captain, Dravid. Tough luck Dravid. Nothing went right for you today.

Dravid: Yeah! South Africa outplayed us in this whole game! Our batting could have got more runs. But the South Africans batted like there was no total that could be defended. Credit to them. We still have lot of matches to go and we hope to come back strongly in this tournament!

Jones: Why was Harbhajan given such a long spell?

Dravid: Well, the wicket was a dusty one and the spinners got the best purchase out of it. But the South Africans batted superbly against Bhajji and Sachin and we were not allowed to get back into the game!

Jones: Thanks Dravid. Now I would like to call upon Graeme Smith. Congragulations Smith. You guys deserve it.

G.Smith: Thanks Dean! It was a great game. Indians are one of the best teams right now in the world and beating them would boost our confidence a lot. Gibbs batted superbly along with me today and our bowlers kept a tight line and length to give no room for the Indian stroke playing superstars!

Jones: You guys made it look like no total was defendable!

G.Smith: We had practiced ourselves to face the spinners a lot! So it wasnt as tough as we thought to today. Probably the Indians were a bit rusty going into their first match of the tournament! Probably they might pick up later in the tournament.

Jones: Thanks Smith. Now for the man of the match. Its an unanimous choice - Herschelle Gibbs. Congrats Gibbs. A great innings!

Gibbs: Thanks! It is always great to score a match winning innings against a team like India with so many great players. I am happy that I was able to contribute to the team's victory.

Jones: How was the wicket to bat on? Did it turn heavily?

Gibbs: Yeah! There was huge turn in it. But we were well equipped to handle those conditions! We practiced a lot as Smith just now said and we reaped the results!

Thanks for tuning into this coverage! Hope to see you all in the next game!

Note: Sorry guys! After 9 overs, I had to autoplay the SA innings as I am fed up with the AI patch. Too huge a cursor and not exciting at all to bowl with! I am changing to Tutsi's new released patch for the next games

Well played by SA. Indian bowlers need to lift their game now if India needs to perform well.

Post Match Press Conference - Dravid and Chappell

Dravid and Chappell disappointed with bowling!

2021185215.jpg

Both Rahul Dravid and Greg Chappell looked bewildered at the bowling performance of the Indians on the field today, when they fielded questions from the enthusiastic reporters. Dravid for a while looked dull while Chappell too tried a lot to hide his disappointment! Here is what they had to say

* It was a very disappointing effort from India today? What do you think went wrong?

Dravid: It was a disappointing day today and a disappointing start to our campaign! Our bowlers looked listless today. We are probably taking more time to get used to the 20/20 format. Bowling in 20-20 is really tough. You have to rely more on containing than picking up wickets!

*The boys looked pretty ordinary on the field today? Any thoughts about that?

Chappell; We have worked hard on the fielding. But you cant avoid bad days on the field and today was one of those! The boys are upset with their effort and I am sure I need not inspire them to do better!

*How did the pitch behave today? Was it turning too much?

Dravid: Not much! Yes there was some unusual turn, but we have been used to such turning wickets! Its just that the South African spinners made good use of the wicket!

*Sachin failed with the bat today! Do you think he should have played more domestic cricket to regain his touch?

Chappell: As I have said umpteen times before, a player of Sachin's stature cant gain much of his form by just playing domestic cricket! He now needs international exposure and thats what he got today! I am sure he is working hard to regain his touch and would do so soon! Also this is a 20-20 slog match where you have 50-50 chances of success and failure!

A heartbreaking loose for India in the first match. But I am sure they will bounce back strongly as always.

EA still are crap in many aspects of the game.

That was a huge reality check for India in a format which they are not accustomed to. All we hope is the team to pull its strings together for the forthcoming matches.

West Indies beat Bangladesh & Zimbabwe lose to Australia

WEST INDIES AND AUSTRALIA COME OUT TRUMPS!

West Indies and Australia record victories over Bangladesh and Zimbabwe respectively in their encounters in the Twenty20 World Championship!

Inzamam sounded warning to batsmen!

Pakistani captain Inzamam Ul Haq sounded a warning to his batsmen to come good in their next encounter against New Zealand! The Pakistani batsmen, who fell like nine pins against the not so great England attack, have totally looked out of touch and form.

They will be boosted by the return of their main strike and fastest bowler, Shoaib Akthar who is the fastest in the world along with Aussie pacer Brett Lee.

New Zealand's captain Stephen Fleming feels confident ahead of Friday's clash against Pakistan. Fleming says "We are confident because we have lot fo experience under these conditions. A team like Pakistan which is from the sub continent is bound to take lot of time to get adjusted in these conditions and we are definitely going to take advantage of that!"
