That's when the procession began. The Australian lower-order batsmen were being picked off one by one by the guile of Hedley Verity and the pace of Harold Larwood. The latter recorded a brilliant 4-wicket haul for the match. Can he make it to 5?

He could not, as Bert "Dainty" Ironmonger the ferret (a term used for someone who's worse than a rabbit with the bat) miraculously survived four balls off his 9th over. Bill O'Reilly was out to Verity in the next over for 2, thus bringing an end to the Australian innings. Nonetheless, he finished with a very impressive 4 for 38 from 9 overs, bowling one of his fastest and meanest spells against the strongest batting lineup of the competition, whilst also neutralizing the threat posed by Don Bradman. Australia finished with a disappointing 143 off 37.2 overs, their lowest ever total in an Olympic final. It could have been a lot less if not for the 24 extras conceded by Great Britain's bowlers in their innings. Needing just 144 runs to chase, Great Britain looked hot favorites for an Olympic Gold medal.
