Don Bradman and Bill Ponsford joined together after the dismissal of their captain Bill Woodfull to an extremely dodgy umpiring decision in the first over of the Australian innings. They went on to add an unbelievable 377 runs for the 2nd wicket, the highest recorded partnership between two batsmen in an Olympic match, beating their own 205-run partnership in the final of the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam four years previously. Ponsford, who went on to record a maiden Olympic century was completely upstaged by Bradman, who simply could not stop scoring runs on this particular day. Having taken 90 balls to reach his century up to which point he had hit only 1 six, he cut loose bringing up the next 164 runs off just 84 balls and hitting a further 10 sixes to finish with 11 for the innings - the most ever hit by a batsman in an innings in the Olympics.
In just one innings, he had already scored nearly as many runs as the legendary Clem Hill had managed during his record 1904 season where he had scored 270 runs from 5 matches at an average of 90. His 11 sixes were also one more than Hill had managed during the 1904 tournament, which until today was the most number of sixes hit by a batsman in an Olympic cricket tournament. His unbeaten 264 was also 114 runs ahead of the previous record holder for the highest individual score in the Olympics - Jack Hobbs, who had scored an unbeaten 150 against the United States in 1924. Meanwhile, Australia finished with a total of 378, also the highest in Olympic history. Never before has there been a single innings where so many Olympic records have fallen all at once. It might be safe to say that this record score of Bradman's might never be upstaged. Those who already speak of him as the greatest batsman to ever walk the face of the earth clearly know what they're talking about.

Chile, who had already been battered into submission by Bradman's ruthless knock, threw in the towel by the 32nd over of their innings. Bert Ironmonger finished the match with only the second hat-trick ever recorded in Olympic history after Ireland's Tom Jameson in 1924 to emerge with figures of 7 for 15 from his 7.4 overs - the best ever recorded by an Australian bowler in the Olympic Games, beating Ernie Jones' 5 for 30 against New Zealand in 1900, and the third best overall following Bart King's 8 for 11 in 1912 and Tom Richardson's 7 for 11 in 1900. Australia won by a humongous 252-run margin, the second highest in terms of runs in Olympic history following Great Britain's 278-run mauling of France in 1900, the same match in which Richardson emerged with his record innings haul. Needless to say, Chile were visibly relieved the torment was finally over.
