Post Line-ups Cricket at the 1948 Olympics | Match 12 - What on earth happened back there?!

No changes necessary for the States; if we can beat Canada we give ourselves a chance to sneak through.

Ron Oxenham in.

Cecil Ayling at 7 & everyone else move 1 down the order .

O'Brian and Wellings were good. They just needed some support. But we were never in the contest. They deserved to win this.

The batting phenomenon that was Don Bradman continued to leave some of the world's best bowlers absolutely powerless. The victims this time being George Francis and Learie Constantine, two West Indian bowlers of great renown, who were both carted at above 7 an over. Bradman had now become the first player to score more than 2 centuries in a single Olympic tournament, thus taking his overall century count in the Olympics to 3 centuries, the most by any batsman ever in the Olympics. His three most recent innings in the Olympic Games read 129* against Great Britain in the 1928 final, 264* against Chile, and now 108 against the West Indies. In a matter of just two games, his overall career record had inflated from 227 runs at 113.50 from 4 matches to 599 runs at 199.67 from 6 matches. There is simply no stopping this man, and if he keeps going this way, there is no stopping Australia either.

It was all over for the West Indies as early as the 8th over of their innings, when Eddie Gilbert removed their champion batsman George Headley for a 2-ball duck. They fell 56 runs short of Australia's total in the end, missing out on their full quota of 50 overs by just one delivery as a result of Ron Oxenham claiming the final wicket off the penultimate ball of the match.

After years of having suffered at the hands of Bart King, this was perhaps Canada's best chance of dishing out some payback at the United States with all of their great cricketers save for the now aged Christy Morris having retired. The Canadians however still had their legendary pace bowler Herbert Wookey (third from left) in their ranks, and even now at the age of 44, he was among the very best in business. The United States were bundled out for a paltry 108 off 36.2 overs.

Canada humiliated the Americans further by scoring their runs at well above 4 an over, with the talented Clarke Bell (first from left) finishing the match with a huge six off Desmond Roberts. They completed their most comprehensive victory till date against the United States in the Olympics, winning by 5 wickets to further narrow the United States' head-to-head lead of 3-2 against them in the Olympic Games. Since the Olympics resumed in 1920 following the Great War however, it is Canada who lead the United States 2-1, just going to show how much the balance of power has shifted in cricket's oldest ever rivalry in recent times.

@Aislabie @Yash.

What record is he gonna break next time? Fastest fifty? Fastest hundred? Most boundaries?

Most boundaries in an innings already belong to him (both sixes & fours). If one has a look at the all-time stats, he's currently just 86 runs short of Clem Hill and 205 runs short of Jack Hobbs on the all-time highest run scorers. It's quite possible for him to eclipse them too with Australia likely to play another 3 matches; 4 if they qualify for the final. Then there's the small matter of him returning for two more Olympic campaigns in 1936 and 1948, and possibly setting even more records.

Will Pakistan be introduced in '48 or '52? I am sure they had a good enough team in '48, even if they didn't have Test status yet.
