Post Line-ups Cricket at the 1948 Olympics | Match 12 - What on earth happened back there?!

Herbert Sutcliffe make it to the playing XI at no 3 replacing Ernest. Unnecessary changes. :p

It is nice to see Sutcliffe back in the XI, even at the somewhat unfamiliar No 3 position. Him and Jack Hobbs were one of the all-time best opening pairs in the history of Test cricket, and easily the best ever produced by England. With Hobbs retiring in 1930, this will be their last Olympics together.

The reason behind this is i tried him as opener last time but it didn't goes well.
And i found that Douglas also an opener.
So i thought of trying him with Hobbs and they did well.

Egypt-

Batsmen were below average. They didn't give enough total for our bowlers to defend. It was easy win for Windies. They outplayed us in all the department.

Ceylon-

Bowlers did a great job to restrict them to 150. Especially Kelaart and Brindley. Again, our batsmen disappointed us. Gunasekara or Geysel should have stayed till the end to finsh the job, but both of them failed. We could have won this one, but we failed to grasp it.

The Netherlands, in their last match showed that they cannot be taken up lightly. Despite the fact that we have a much powerful side, I would field in the best possible XI against the opposition and hence without taking any chances, I would have the rock solid Wilton St Hill in at #5. Teddy Hoad faces the axe.

Argentina's decision to send Australia in after winning the toss proved to be a massive error in judgement on the part of their skipper. Their usually potent bowling attack was mercilessly taken to the cleaners first by Bill Ponsford and Archie Jackson, who put on a record 199 for the 1st wicket. The latter brought up a fine century playing in his first Olympics. Later, it was Don Bradman and Stork Hendry who cashed in, sharing an extremely fast-paced and unbeaten 96-run stand for the 4th wicket to help Australia cross the usually unchaseable 300-run mark. It was also Bradman's first half-century in international cricket.

Argentina didn't even try going after Australia's total. They batted out their full quota of 50 overs to score 162, thus falling 142 runs short in the end.

Predictably impressive win. We'll have to keep playing this way in the semifinals if we want to clinch another Gold medal.
Some time ago I read an article on Cricinfo whose writer argued that Jackson would've gone on to be a better player than Bradman had he not passed away at a young age.

Louis Bookman and George McVeagh got Ireland off to a brilliant start despite the early loss of Tom MacDonald. Their performances were quite ably backed up by Tom Jameson, who remained unbeaten on 73 off just 76 deliveries to help the Irish complete a stunning victory over a Test-class South African side. Ireland were now through to the semi-finals and had given themselves a serious chance of winning a medal of cricket at the 1928 Games.

SOUTH AFRICA 222/2 50.0 overs
IRELAND 226/5 46.1 overs

Ireland won by 5 wickets (with 23 balls remaining)

Hugo van Manen stood tall against the West Indies bowling attack to score an unbeaten 61. Unfortunately for him, he was one of only three players in the Dutch lineup to make it into double figures, and the only to score more than 17. Learie Constantine and George Francis picked 4 wickets apiece to bundle out the Netherlands for 121.

George Challenor, Clifford Roach and George Headley all chipped in with attractive cameos to see West Indies through to victory with nearly 27 overs to spare. They had overcome their bogey side for the first time in three encounters since 1904.

I forsee a bronze medal rematch with our vanquishers last time around, the West Indies.

That was quite an expected result. What is good to see is that everyone has clicked unlike the previous seasons. Prolly we are now mature having played FC cricket for all these years against county sides and England. Headley is a huge boost to the team. He has not exactly set the stage on fire but I believe he will come good when the team would be needing him the most. May be against England or Australia. I hope he gets to his best soon because looking at the fixtures, we might well be playing both England and Australia in the next two matches.

The Indians countered Larwood and Tate quite effectively, but may not have prepared as well for Wally Hammond's potent swingers. He finished with figures of 5 for 24 from his 10 overs.

A good collective bowling effort from the Indians gave Great Britain quite a scare. But they eventually prevailed with George Duckworth and Fred Root hanging on tight to take them to victory by 2 wickets. Wally Hammond showcased his all-round brilliance by backing up his five-wicket haul earlier in the match with a half-century where only one other Englishman could make it past 20.
