Cricket Leagues - Feedback and Suggestions

I was thinking of a dream team/tipping comp for each partcillar league. If not then that was just an idea.

have a look at this if you're interested... I ran it last year for a bit, and then just let it die out. Has a pretty long list of local players if you're interested, most of it came from trawling Cricinfo and taking the players who are still active/alive and not too old.

American Cricket League

I do that a lot for Associate teams. Never get anywhere with it though.

Also, I'll do a MLC comp when I've washed my hands of the CPL. There will be 12 teams, and there will be a GPL style grading system for y'all.

I feel that the cricket league rules thread has to be updated for those who endlessly keep on making leagues and don't have a great record of completing them.

What did you want added?

I think the rules still cover everything, the problem is new members / people starting leagues for the first time, don't read them. We just need to find a way to teach people starting leagues for the first time, to plan a bit more, and do something they are actually going to enjoy. That way they are more likely to stick with it.

Sounds good, but HOW?

I asked MattW a similar question. What I got from his answer, is that we all need to be like a community, supporting people that join the section. Helping them get started. But if they are not yet ready, encouraging them to get to know the members and workings of leagues first. (which we all pretty much know, but it can be hard to do at times)

It's much better if we all help them, instead of the mods having to punish them, when they make a mistake.

Good solution there. We should take the initiative and rather not blame them. At first I used to support them by joining their leagues, most of the leagues are called of due to lack of managers, followed by lack of interested followed by some technical snag due to which the guy has to make the databases again.

We should actually be helping members first up. The other day I saw some thread and people were jumping on the league starter with all the wild suggestions. If he knew all that, why would he commit those mistakes? People here feel everyone should know what to do and what not to. Shame, really. We all learn as we stay here.

As I saw the first season on my league, I was like, this is not that great. :p

Really it is through leagues that people get better at running them. Most of the leagues which complete their first season usually scale 9-10 seasons. That's what I meant.

Another option is that we could have a guidelines thread in which all the guidelines are there for the new managers.

These are some suggestion which I liked given by Varun.
1. Use your original ideas. Just make sure that the idea isn't the same as a currently/recently active league.

2. If you are really that keen on running the league, then manage it with you giving your best to it, not just run a league for sake of running it or getting it to be popular, but to enjoy yourself and the managers.

3. If you are in contention for a Premier league sort of thing, just try to implement some new system of rules/ideas in it which makes it unique from others.

4. Don't leave a season in middle (except in the case of an emergency or business), complete atleast one season of your league.

5. I would actually recommend you to plan whole of the league, including the fixtures, draft and everything beforehand. Believe me, it helps a lot.

If I've missed anything, just inform me.
Two suggestions for league managers/participants -

1.) Do not quit/close your league due to low activity, when it has just been running for less than 2 months/2 seasons. Try to improve the quality of the league, and keep it running for a long time, which would induce trust in the team managers and they would acknowledge your hardwork and participate in leagues. If you close a league with 15-30 days of start, and the reason is low activity, then either be patient or please don't start leagues.

2.) For participants, please keep don't asking the dates for drafts/auctions, matches etc. again and again (especially when all the teams haven't been taken yet). I am not suggesting this as a rule, but as a way you could actually builds up a dignity in you.

Cheers!:)

Moreover I would like to add some points of my own:

1. If you don't get good managers, don't get distraught. Just try and attract managers using good presentation, unique idea, unique fixtures etc. Many big leagues have struggled in their initial seasons.

2. Put you heart and soul into the league. Run it with grit and determination.

They are all really great! I'll try and incorporate them into the rules thread / post.

You seem very passionate about making the leagues section better lately; I'm very impressed. :D

I'm totally free nowadays, due to my 105-day vacation and was just toying around the way the section would be improved. Few months ago there was a bigger debate about the issue.

Also, it might be a good idea to hand over the reigns of an established league to a new member. So, at the minute I can instantly think of three ailing leagues that could keep going: NZPL, GPL and CPL.

Dipak and Callum may want to keep their league, but they could support a new member who wants to start a similar league.

I personally can't wait to kill the CPL - really haven't enjoyed this season tbh - but it could be kept going by a new member looking to make a start in the leagues section. I believe that is what Swirler and Khaleel did with the SLPL.
