I suppose that's Chief hoping that Big Ant have been secretly making a Union game. In reality it'll end up being Rugby World Cup 2015 and then the same thing rebadged as Rugby 16 the next year.

I see. Because Rugby Challenge was awful, so hopefully a new entrant will come along.
With Rugby 7s in the Olympics in 2016, Japan getting a Super Rugby Franchise, and both the 2019 World Cup and 2020 Olympics (with 7s) also in Japan, somebody should be all over a hybrid 15s & 7s Rugby Union game.
There's two confirmed - RWC 15 (which is almost certainly HB Studios) and Rugby Challenge from HES/Tru Blu (no developer yet known). Rugby Challenge has the license for 7s for some countries already confirmed.
My hope is that Big Ant are actually developing the latter, and keeping it very quiet, but I fear that it may well be someone else.

Hmm, I hadn't seen that confirmation of a new RC game. The one positive would be that Big Ant not making AFL Live 3 means that the other developer that HES have been working with on sports titles, Wicked Witch, is probably working on that.
Maybe it's Trickstar...
I only saw it the other day - it's weird, they haven't actually "announced" it. But they DID confirm it was in development in response to emailed enquiries after a couple of the Union Boards confirmed that their countries were licensed to be in it.
AFL3 is probably Wicked Witch (they've done the previous one and mobile versions) and they would also make sense for RC I guess. Potentially clashing: AFL3 could be to tie to the Grand Final in September OR waiting for the following season next March/April. RC, you would think, would have to be September to tie in with the World Cup. Of course, they could be doing both in parallel - you'd think they would have bandwidth for just those.
RLL3 looks lovely, but is delayed already, and if they had both league AND union coming in September (which is the sort of window I'd expect) then I'd be surprised that we're seeing all this work on DBC at the moment. Given that we know they are also working on DBC16 and the Lacrosse game as well, I wonder whether it's feasible that they are doing Union also.
So my feeling is that, sadly, it's probably Wicked Witch doing Union. Would be very happy to be wrong on that though!

I've never got the impression that Tru Blu bothered with timing their releases to things.

Would it even be technically possible to make a functional Rugby Union video game, considering how all the rules of that game tend to confuse everyone, including the professional players on the pitch?

To defer to myself for a comment on that:
It's going to be a debut for someone then - I don't know who else are licensed for PS4/XB1... I think Sidhe have already ruled themselves out of this as well.
On the one hand BOO, and on the other I'm glad you can be focussed on Cricket to be honest.

There was movement to push T20 cricket as an olympic sport, but the ICC ruled it out, so we miss out on getting the Mario and Sonic treatment for cricket.
So, I blame them entirely.
