Lee's point was more about managing expectations and he's spot on. Both AC13 and Big Ant have left a lot to be desired on that front. When folks have been led to believe the game will definitely be out in 2013 and mid december you come out and state the release has been pushed back to 2014 you are bound to get some criticism.
I think there's been some expectation management going on since the start of the month. Both by Ross and the more sensible voices in this thread.
I would be surprised if anyone was surprised by the not 2013 announcement.
i think the only thing ross should have done differently, was never to have made the statement of "no chance out game will be next year, none, nil, nada." i am guessing that came out because he was expecting ashes 13 to be cancelled, but until that had been confirmed the statement was overly bullish, maybe even reckless.
whether it was due to retailers, or was always their strategy, it's been clear since october that the plan seemed to be a december release, waiting to see if ashes would move in november. that raised the possibility of ashes releasing. now nobody could have imagined what a shambles that ended upbeing, but ross did expect it to "kill the market", and simply if that released a 2013 release became very unlikely for DBC. i'm not here to rehash old arguments, say i told you so or even be "right for the wrong reasons", but it was fairly clear to all but the most blinkered - who have suddenly 180'd and are now apparently the sensible voices (come off it). i still expected to see DBC in 2013 however, simply because i didn't expect ashes to release, but there was obviously a chance it might not make 2013.
fair play to Ross, we've seen a lot of DBC in the press etc. recently and it's clear he tried to get it out in 2013. not being based in Aus i'm particularly impressed that he is going for a simultaneous worldwide release when it seems he could have released in Aus/NZ at least now. i think the nets is a great gesture, and just hope my PC is up to it.
bottom line, it's disappointing we won't see it for a while. one would think feb/march. but it's gonna be a good game, i'm fairly confident of that. and if the delay increases the profitability and increases the likelihood of (and raises the quality of) a sequel, it'll end up being a positive.
