England in India - Oct to Jan 2012/13

So that's it, a good win for India but they surely need a better performance from Ashwin in the next test match. Pujara is a class act but would like see Kohli getting some runs.

He's been accurate, but being the guy who got Bell and Pietersen in the first innings, you'd have to say there were a few gimme wickets.

With England there all too often are.

PAK vs ENG (UAE, 1st Test) : Strauss, COOK, TROTT, PIETERSEN, BELL, Morgan, PRIOR, BROAD, SWANN, Tremlett, ANDERSON

IND vs ENG (India, 1st Test) : Compton, COOK, TROTT, PIETERSEN, BELL, Patel, PRIOR, BROAD, SWANN, Bresnan, ANDERSON

Wow waddyaknow, EIGHT of the same side that capitulated softly against Pakistan earlier this year. Strauss retired or he'd likely have been in there, Bresnan in for Tremlett and Morgan wasn't a regular anyway so to try and improve on the failing XI they picked in UAE they went with a bit-part batsman who can bowl tidy but nothing nearly dangerous enough spin.

I heard recently a definition of madness as doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. So how does picking the same players over and over when they were annihilated 3-0 work............!?!?!?!?

Not too surprised the recovery didn't last long enough, almost makes you wonder if India weren't told to ease off a bit, or worse still made a few bets /bit of money out of easing off. Cook and Prior aside the game would have been over very very quickly, maybe this series will test the resolve of the selectors going with 'experience' over what is happening in the middle and a desperate need for runs.

Sometimes experience can work against you, especially not such great experience like England had in UAE.

Pujara now averages 71.25 in 6 Tests just behind Don Bradman (99.94) for players who have played a at least 5 Test Matches. Not a bad start to Test Career.

Bairstow and Panesar in as a minimum for the second test. Broad's place must be in doubt too.

Panesar for Broad, or Bresnan/Anderson, but who to make way for Bairstow? Bell and KP in particular struggled in UAE. Just as well we went with Patel and abandoned any hopes of Rashid becoming an all-rounder that could play a part in such tours

Bell, he's missing the 2nd Test for sure, I believe the wife is having a kid.

And the cry for turning pitches continues...

anyone for bell is a massive boon for england, I actually think they'd be better just telling him to stay at home and giving bairstow a fair shot.

cook might well turn out to be england's dravid.

'The wife'? Not sure if its related to the way of speaking in different parts of the world, but to me it sounds generalized (as if 'the wife' is common to all).:p

By the way, good win for India in the end.... I actually started thinking that India might give up the advantage and that England might draw the game. But well done to us for eventually getting to the victory in a canter. Still, work to be done. Ashwin was ineffective in the 2nd innings. He also seems to be in the Bhajji mould where he loses bite if the pitch isn't as helping.

"I don't think the match referee can question a pitch just because it's turning. When the wicket seams right from the first delivery nobody asks questions," the India captain said.

. The only way to take the toss out of the equation is to have pitches that turn right from the start. The game may end in 3.5 days, but both teams will have an equal opportunity to win the game," said Dhoni.

1st test review

Looking at this test from a historical perspective of recent england test tours to India, I think England can be encouraged.

Weaker English teams in 2001/02, 2005/06 suffered equally bad starts with the bat and came back stronger as the series progressed vs India teams who had a stronger batting line-up & a stronger Kumble lead spin attack.

So really England just have to bat collectively more like their second innings batting effort and i'm still confident they can leave this series without being defeated.

With regards to the balance of the side, a few area's are key for me:

- Firstly England's quicks need to step up in their wicket-taking ability and reverse swing acumen. The pace Anderson, Broad, Bresnan were bowling attack is like 5-10 kmph (varying) below to what they were bowling just one year ago. It was a disgusting sight to see Bresnan struggling to reach 80 mph during the 1st innings.

When Khan & Yadav were bowling for India, we saw how dangerous they looked when they got the ball reversing - England's bowlers can do this & must do so. Can't expect Swann to be the trump card bowling 50 overs an innings, since its proven historically than ever since India became a force @ home only teams with high quality pacers have won/drawn series their (windies 84, s africa 2000, aus 2004, pakistan 99, england 76, windies 74).

Monty is ok - but no foreign team never won in India playing two spinners since they became strong @ home. So i'm against him playing unless a pitch in the next three test proves to be a major dustbowl.

If Finn is not fit, Meaker has to come in since he has the pace and reverse-swing ability. And if Broad doesn't step up, i would be willing to risk weakening England's strong lower order and picking both Finn & Meaker at some stage in this series.

The Mumbai pitch, also if it plays like it does historically, may be the only surface in the next three test where England's quicks will guaranteed to get seam movement & bounce for large portions of the match. So that should encourage them.

England has done really well in 2nd innings. Its not the pitch .Its the england teams self belief is low . KP & Bell disappointed me. The way they got out is really shocking.

India should get more help if the pitch helps the bowlers more than what was on offer at Motera. Hope Mumbai offers really good bounce and turn. I won't mind a dustbowl that offers turn from ball one (like what Dhoni asked for at the end of this game).

Even on this pitch, Ashwin and Ojha got decent bounce and turn. The turn got slower and slower as the game progressed, which made it easier for England in the second innings. Even a pitch like the one in Mumbai 2004 vs Australia would be good. Australia couldn't bat on that pitch, and so they adopted the "hit or miss" approach and were bundled out for 107.. On that same pitch, Sachin and Laxman scored valuable runs and set Australia a challenging target. Get a pitch like that again!
