England In India - October 2011/12

Jadeja's always had the talent, just been badly misused. Good to see him winning critics over now.

As for Patel, need to see him in action a bit more before I come to any conclusions.

I think there was an issue with Yardy as 5th bowler. He has been playing for them for a quite a while but, he's dropped for a poor performance. Even Patel has the same problem. If you compare, both of them have been scoring less than 20 (average) with the bat and over 50 (average) with the bowl. I think there is a major problem with this. Wright would be a good pick, he has the ability to play aggressive shots at the end of the innings.

Yardy pulled out due to depression, but yeah, he didn't play well either and was never more than a 20-20 bits and pieces player.

Oh, and Wright is not a good pick. As backed up by his countless below average performances.

We've got Bresnan, Broad and Swann. All of them are first choice picks for me in the ODI side as bowlers. Therefore, those 3 at 7, 8 and 9 isn't bad. Yeah, perhaps it's weaker than most teams at 7, but Broad and Swann should make up for that with strength in the tail. In my opinion, we need a reliable 5th bowler more than we need a 7th batsman. Pick someone like Borthwick and give them a go at bowling 10 overs. He could even fill in for Broad at 8 or 9 in the order for this series, so it's not like he'd totally weaken the batting lineup. Patel doesn't seem capable of doing either role well at the moment.

England "all-rounder" contenders in their last 10 ODIs

Bopara - 258 runs @ 28.67 & 3 wkts @ 57.67
Wright - 186 runs @ 26.57 & 1 wkt @ 237.00
Yardy - 165 runs @ 23.57 & 7 wkts @ 71.29
Collingwood - 165 runs @ 20.63 & 6 wkts @ 34.33
Patel - 103 runs @ 17.17 & 5 wkts @ 64.00

Swann - 79 runs @ 26.33 & 17 wkts @ 20.35
Bresnan - 93 runs @ 15.50 & 13 wkts @ 39.54
Broad - 20 runs @ 6.67 & 11 wkts @ 41.73

Considering Collingwood was in poor form with the bat he doesn't shape up too badly. I've tossed in Wright and Yardy with the batting all-rounders, only Collingwood does remotely well enough to be able to adequately fill the fifth bowler role and even then I'd not want him to bowl it every time.

Broad and Bresnan aren't exactly in top form with the ball or indeed bat. Quite how we managed to thump India 3-0 is a mystery, well kind of. Swann bowled well, Anderson ok, but essentially Broad (36.00), Bresnan (40.33), Finn (49.00) and Dernbach (59.25) sucked

Swann on the other hand is very nearly second of those eight players in terms of batting average, albeit only three times out, and miles in front in terms of bowling average. Collingwood has always been a consistent little bowler, good fielder and would only need to find a bit of batting form to be worthy of a recall.

Anyone else think Colly was harshly treated in terms of ODI cricket? Obviously next world cup is a while away so you want to try and plan, and now he's been dropped I think it's probably a backwards step to go back to him, but he didn't really ever do anything wrong in the short-form.

Nah, Colly deserved to be dropped he was in awful, awful form. Whether he should be brought back in now is the question, in my eyes.

I think some do, but not of a high enough quality. Still I'd rather a genuine all-rounder than trying to make county batsmen like Yardy and Patel into all-rounders. They could turn Swann into an all-rounder, play a spinner on their spinning ability alone like Panesar or did someone say Briggs?

Exactly, no are of a good enough quality, which ENG really shouldn't be picking spin-bowling all-rounders or any other spinner other than Swann in ODIs/T20s, since none are good enough on the county circuit.

Fact is though, this tour to IND and any other sub-continent tours ENG have between now and the 2015 W Cup should be taken into proper context.

Turning pitches wont be present in AUS/NZ in 2015. ENG have allot of good fast-bowlers and some potentially good quick-bowling all-rounder in Bresnan and Woakes.

However i guess this series, Flower is looking to find a combination for the T20 WC in SRI next year and ATM i think we are going to struggle to find spinners to properly back-up Swann, unless someone really steps up in the next year.

While I wouldn't ever want to advocate England's multi-tier system of selection policies that involve some being dropped immediately, others just long enough to fail, some persisted through poor form and some persisted with when they aren't good enough, BUT I think a rest was right for Collingwood.

You don't get to 197 ODI caps by being awful, although it seems you can get to 40-60 by being ordinary. He was a gritty middle order player who was a top fielder and decent bowler, something we are struggling to find. Bopara, Trott and KP are never going to be as good bowling, the replacements like Wright are never going to be trusted let alone good enough, and bowlers like Yardy and Patel might bowl tidily but England win ODIs by taking wickets not by bowling tidily as I may scoot off to put together as stats (I have some, might just update and expand beyond one man's captaincy)

England go unchanged and opt to bat first on a surface where dew's expected late in the game. :facepalm

Btw, Paul Collingwood is one of the pundits in Neo Cricket's pre-show. Nice. Someone just injure Samit Patel already!

It is so good to see someone technically sound bat like that. Trott!

Damn, he's just gone! That's a big wicket for us, Vinay Kumar does it. That actually was a good delivery.

I've just finished reading Graeme Swann's book where he makes it pretty clear that the England players don't really give a damn about ODI cricket.
Just how it should be :p
