England In India - October 2011/12

Bleh, rain sucks.

So day 1, England 127/2. England's day I would say.

India didn't bowl too badly at all. PK and Zak poked and probed with the new ball, swinging it well. PK was brilliant. But it seemed like their tactic in the first session was to test England's patience; not the best ploy against a Top 3 of Strauss, Cook and Trott. They were disciplined, and generally such bowling works. It's not a bad plan to build pressure and try and induce a mistake, but that was always going to be unlikely against this England Top 3.
Having said that, Strauss fell to a rash stroke after the break, although credit does go to MSD and Zak for a very good plan (and a good catch by Ishant), while Zak nipped out Cook for just 12 with a typical Zak dismissal. But you can't help feeling given the conditions, they could have been a little bit more attacking. Attacked the stumps a bit more, in PK's case use the inswinger some more.

After the break, PK kept at it. He used the inswinger more with the old ball, and again was probing away testing KP and Trott's patience. But without that massive hoop and with the pitch easing out, he began to be milked away, although he did beat the bat quite a few times.

Ishant was...himself I guess. A lot of good balls and moments where he looked dangerous, followed by a loosener or two, relieving the pressure. I didn't watch the India/WI matches, so I can't tell if this is how he bowled against WI or if he was below his game. But he certainly wasn't going to trouble this lineup with that sort of lack of consistency.

Bhajji was good, but the pitch didn't offer him much, and apart from the edge early on, he didn't prove much of a threat.

Speaking of the edge, Trott had a good day today. Two half chances missed, but on a better day you'd expect India to snaffle up atleast one of those two opportunities. Instead Trott bats on, easing to a fifty and looking rather solid by the end of the day.

KP fought hard. You could sense he wanted to get a move on, but he held back, nurdling PK and not falling for temptation. Zak was testing him, and in the middle of a fine spell when his hamstring acted up. And that's definitely going to be the main talking point tomorrow. Will Zak be fit to take to the field and bowl? What if he isn't?

If Zak isn't fit to bowl tomorrow, it'll give India massive problems. Bhajji bowling a bulk of the overs in the first innings of a Lords test is not what MSD would have had in mind. Ishant has been erratic, and PK's effectiveness is dimming as the pitch eases up, ball loses shine, and his pace drops. It'll be interesting to see how the Indian think thank handles this problem tomorrow.

So to sum up, easily England's day. The negotiated the hardest part of the innings for only 2 wickets, and Zak's injury has put them far ahead. An attack of just PK, Ishant and Bhajji doesn't seem as threatening. They'll be looking to push on tomorrow for a big score.

As for India...they'll be hoping Ishant regains form and soon. If Zak isn't fit to bowl, expect Bhajji to hold up an end with some support from Raina while Ishant and PK attack in bursts. Ishant's got the ability to nick on wickets on this surface even when the ball is old and the moisture is gone, so they'll need that. As for PK and Bhajji, the patience game might not work for Trott, but England have a stroke filled middle order with KP, Bell, Morgan and Prior, so it might be worth just hanging back a bit tomorrow, stop the flow of runs, and try and induce a mistake.

Will be interesting to say the least. But England well ahead.

If Zaheer doesn't return tomorrow, we will face massive problems to say the least. The 2 wickets we got today were courtesy of him. I just hope they are cramps that vanish ASAP. Hope its not some serious injury that he has picked up.

Having watched back the highlights, Praveen Kumar bowled some absolute beauties today so I shouldn't think you'll have too many problems so long as you remain patient.

His lack of pace is a concern, that's why in those conditions Jimmy will be lethal, as he'll be bowling mid to high 80s, not just about touching 80. He did bowl well, but I'd like to see Praveen be a little quicker.

Good fight from England on Day 1, all about fighting on a day like that. Disappointing shot from Strauss, but it happens. You can so easily be 50-5 in conditions like that.

if zaheer isn't back today then india need a 3rd seamer, if it's a full days play the 3 bowlers they have will get tired very easily and too much pressure will be put on ishant and praveen.

this is were someone like a trott would've been good, india dont have a part time seam bowler in the side and they realistically only have raina as a part time offie, so it'll be interesting to see how dhoni reacts to the problem if zaheer isn't fit for play.

Day 1 gone and not only 4 days left. This already seems like a draw to me unless the our batting collapses which won't be anything new to see anyways. England will most likely post over 400 in their first innings looking at how brilliantly Trott is batting (like always) but I have a feeling that KP isn't going to be there for long. If Indian batting doesn't collapse then they will most likely post something close to England's score or little less and then England will probably get fair lead over India and then Dhoni will decide that they can't chase the target and will go for a draw and Gambhir and Dravid can stick there for hours. The main point of my post here is RAIN SUCKS!!:facepalm

I wouldn't mind seeing Sachin turn his arm over. Or Dravid keeping while MSD bowls...

And Dhoni can consistently bowl around 75 to 76 mph... not too bad for a wicketkeeper. I remember this from the over he bowled against WI in the tour before the previous WI tour. When he bowled one of the batsman, can't remember who it was.

It's coming on Geo Super yaara.

I did not know because I did not see a single pre-series ad on Geosuper. Anyways nice to have seen it live yesterday. Rain spoiled what would have been a very good day of cricket. India must be praying Zaheer has not pulled a hamstring. If that is the case, England would maul the rest of their bowling especially with the way Ishant bowled yesterday.

Yeah, England did the hard work and Strauss didn't make most of it.

I'd say it is about even, 2-3 early wickets and 150/4 or 150/5 won't look so clever. We won't know if it will get any easier to bat for a while. This could be far more interesting than the kind of flat tracks you too often get, batsmen having to earn their runs and bowlers and fielders having to make most of the conditions and take catches. What could England have been but for dropped catches?

No surprise Khan bowled well and did the damage, how long was he at Worcs? He's their best bowler by far, in this country (type conditions) certainly. I just hope our bowlers fire, the decision to have Broad in the side will be seriously tested if we score say 225-275 and need to pick up regular wickets. I hope he's not "told" to bang it in short and waste the ball and conditions, I remember India I think it must have been 2002 where we were bowling and they were 30 odd for 1 and the ball was doing a bit. Then England went mad on the short stuff and that was it, India put on 600+

3rd Test: England v India at Leeds, Aug 22-26, 2002 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo

I think it was that one, fits the bill even if the cricinfo commentary is rather 'basic'. Conditions favouring the bowler need to be made most of, the side that does that well and whose batsmen don't throw their wickets away win the match rather than the side who gets best of the conditions/bats first

What a tough day 1. proper test cricket with a real battle between bat and ball. Sadly India's main bowling threat might not have a part to play in this game after that injury. The weather has cleared up, sunny here now so wooo. I'll be in Lords tomorrow so hope it stays like this.

I think day 2 will belong to England, quite possibly reaching 300+.

England's day I would say, Trott batted really beautifully. Zaheer and PK were impressive but PK lacked that pace that would trouble the batsman.
And if Zak won't be coming back then I see England making a good score.

If all goes to plan for England you'd be hoping for a score around 370-420 and have India batting by the end of the day. Could change quickly with early wickets though.

Can't wait for todays play as I've got the day off so I can actually watch it instead of having sneaky looks at my phone every half hour and the weather should be decent today.
