England - Journey to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa

Even though England are in poor form at the moment but beating Belgium won't be difficult for them. I predict that Rooney will score the only goal in this match and England win with a scoreline of 1-0. Nice presentation skills Trev :)

Owen nets England's first win in 4

Michael Owen had the glory last night as his two goals gave England a much needed win away in Brussels. Owen's two second half goals came as a relief to The whole of England ahead of their grudge match with Croatia. The two friendlies overall gave a feeling of relief, even though they lost heavily to Norway their performance was good. Many England fans after the game felt Harry Redknapp had got the side going in the right direction.

Watching paint dry was probably more interesting than the first half, as neither side made the keeper work. But there was some bad news concerning Gareth Barry. A bad tackle from Belgium defender Jelle van Damme, saw Barry stretchered off with a broken leg. The break is not as bad as first feared but will take 5 months to heal. This gave Ashley Young the chance to gain his 1st international cap.

The 2nd half livened up with just 1 minute in. The move started with some neat passing across the back for before Bridge saw Owen free and launched a long through ball forward. Owen had the pace to get away from the defender but his first touch gave the keeper a chance to collect. Owen slid in front of the diving keeper and managed to get a toe on it. The ball looked to be heading wide but managed to creep in off the post. England certainly deserved their lead after having a lot of the possession in the match. The next major chance was the match winning one. Ashley Young took on van Buyten on the left wing and swung in a low cross. Owen had managed to free himself from De Man and swung his left foot at the ball. Owen's shot flew into the top corner and England lead two-nothing. Defoe and Owen both had good chances shortly afterwards but failed to beat the keeper. Belgium's best chance fell to Pieroni. A cross out from the right by Gillet was missed by James, who had come out to catch it. Pieroni got his head on it, but the ball clattered into the woodwork. James had time to make a save in the last minute, giving England a clean sheet and more importantly a crucial win.

Harry Redknapp - "A brilliant performance by the players today. They gave it there all and were determined to get a win tonight before our match with Croatia. Michael was superb. His speed, positioning and finishing was just sublime. When he's in-form there is no better striker in the world. Ashley Young performed well on debut as well. Unfortunately it sounds like Gareth will be out for a long time. All the lads are feeling for him, but I'm sure he'll make a quick recovery and come back hunting for a place in the squad. A top effort by the team today!"
