England Team Discussion

Michael Vaughan is interested - he's already made it public that he would like the job.

the only time i felt really eager to watch an eng team was during his time, under vaughan they looked like team up for a fight and like winners, under flower strauss cook, even though they won more and got high rankings i never felt like following or enjoying their game.
I kind of agree with him on the question of is the role actually necessary? Or the new replacement DoEC one?

india did well with shastri after that disaster test series in eng, as long the right sort of man like vaughan someone who has real experience of the situation and knows how to win, especially when everybody involved isnt upto scratch like moores or selectors or cook himself as captain, he might be that extra factor that can talk some sense and give them that edge.

I'm sure when Flower was in charge as Coach, his role had a similar sort of title, in terms of Director of English Cricket, especially when Giles came in to do the One Day sides. Just seems like we're trying to take some pressure off of the Coach, by having someone else accountable for results as well.

I'd hate to see Vaughan given it. He's just a rent a quote these days, saying whatever he thinks is controversial and/or relevant just to get his name and face in the papers. Hussain would be really good for me, but like he said, why would he give up a great job (that he's very good at) to get involved with that rabble? He's already given a lot to English cricket, so it's not like he's not done his bit.

Graves will give Vaughan the job (not what I want, as he's just a wannabe celebrity now). That will open the door for them both to bring in Gillespie as coach. Moores and Whitaker must be very worried.

in his article in the mail, Hussain said his "short answer was no"...

I have been asked if I would like to take on Downton’s job and the short answer is ‘no’. I will do anything I can to help the ECB and English cricket but there are far better candidates than me out there.

The ECB should batter down his door to find out the long answer and convince him that there is nobody better...

If Hussain really won't take it, I think Vaughan is next best - he is a bit of a rent a gob these days but he has a sharp cricket brain, not afraid to piss people off and importantly it would annoy some of the senior players and shake them up a bit - good! Vaughan is about results rather than personality and process.

Strauss would be a disaster, embedding the corporate, safety-first stats obsessed culture and sending a very cosy message to the senior team. everything wrong with the England team today has its genesis in the strauss/flower era.

Stewart I'd be open to; probably a middle ground between Vaughan and Strauss.

I think he's only a wannabe celebrity because he doesn't have a meaningful role in cricket. It's very difficult for ex-players after they retire and I totally understand the financial attractions of being a "celebrity".
Dizzy would be a great coach although I do sort of agree that too much Yorkshire isn't necessarily a good thing!

Last time I saw him he was rugby tackling Michael Vaughan who was dressed as squirrel... Everyday events in English cricket I guess :p.

Why do you think I'm such a fan? :D

On Wednesday, Clarke provided a reminder of his abrasive nature by storming out of the dinner to celebrate the launch of the 2015 Wisden Almanack. Clarke took exception to a speech by former ICC president, Ehsan Mani and then became embroiled in a robust exchange of views with Wisden's editor, Lawrence Booth, after onlookers suggested Clarke's behaviour fell somewhat below the standards expected of a guest at such an event. Yet the ECB continues to view Clarke as an asset.
