England Team Discussion

A couple of concerns for the England One Day Team

1. Eoin Morgan has effectively been dropped by Middlesex. He's only averaging 6 this season.
2. Although Willey made 91 today opening the batting, he's not bowling very much and he hardly ever takes the new ball for Northants. Something England were asking him to do against NZ. Don't think this is doing him any favours, and he might find he's not in the squad for the Australia series.

There are positives in the one day cup though.
1. Varun Chopra continues to score lots of runs
2. Adil Rashid is bowling a lot of overs and more economical than he has done in the past.
3. Alex Hales and Jason Roy are continuing their good one day records.
4. Liam Plunkett seems to be bowling well.
5. Steve Davies is smashing it for Surrey. Incredible to think he's probably our 4th choice wicket keeper.

I noticed that Chris Woakes isn't getting into the Warickshire team. Don't know if he's picked up another injury or whether he's just not in their best one day eleven.

Willey isn't fully fit to bowl properly, hardly been playing fc cricket

Chopra is interesting a year ago, he would have been putting lyth under pressure, but his only scored recently in the royal London, but he won't get a look in, he looks to try and bat through, they will let Ali open with hales, to get the extra bowler in

Woakes would be in the 11, but he has picked up another niggle, after training with England pre the Edgbaston test, and to the person who said his one day record is atrocious, it just isn't, as long as he opens the bowling he will get movement and get batsman out

Chris Woakes
Batting average- 18
Bowling average- 36

Compare that to other England all rounders.

Ben Stokes
Batting average- 30
Bowling average- 25

Chris Jordan
Batting average- 12
Bowling average- 28

David Willey
Batting average- 21
Bowling average- 33

Liam Plunkett
Batting average- 21
Bowling average- 32

Ravi Bopara
Batting average- 39
Bowling average- 27

Tim Bresnan
Batting average- 18
Bowling average- 32

Woakes definitely has the worst record.

No you misunderstand, his record isnt atrocious, but is definetly the worst of that lot.
He isnt a white ball cricketer, i have said this many many times, having seen him a lot down edgbaston, up until Giles' last year he was used as a first change bowler, and just got hit, in the way onions used to in list a
he showed for england that give him the new ball he is good, (tri series pre WC) otherwise he is poor.

I would not let him be anywhere near the odi/t20i teams, so that he can focus on red ball cricket, and eventually be jimmys replacement in the test team

emm, i rate jordan in limited overs stuff but he's definitely not an all-rounder. he can whack it a bit but who can't in modern cricket

I think David Willey proved me wrong tonight. He's a definite pick for the ODI and T20 squads. 4 economical overs, 3 wickets and a ton in 41 balls in a big quarter final takes some bol**cks.

Will Beer impressed again. With the next T20 World Cup being in India, he could be an option.

Does anyone know why Daryl Mitchell never seems to get a chance? Even in the Lions squad? He averages over 40 and has played quite a bit in div 1.

Beer's odd: I've seem him bowl on TV and not thought much of him but his T20 stats are reasonable (although not great this year it must be said) plus he's a leg spinner which automatically puts him higher on the cool players rankings. He just seems like the sort of bowler that would be taken apart outside England but perhaps I'm wrong! He's very much a T20 specialist, he hasn't played a First Class game this year and Sussex's spin has come occasionally from Ashar Zaidi but mostly from Mike Yardy with Luke Wells or Chris Nash rolling their arms over occasionally. Tymal Mills seems to have done reasonably well in the T20 Blast: average of 19, strike rate of 14 and an economy of 8 an over: although that injury of his probably rules him out from major international tours sadly.

I've always had the thought that Mitchell doesn't quite do enough, he does indeed average over 40 but he just doesn't look like an International player. His defensive technique is good but I just feel he would get very bogged down as an opener against better bowlers. In this new world of attacking cricket Mitchell would get lost. Superb county pro though, solid batsman, good fielder, bowls a bit and captains well.

Always thought he was a good bat. Provided, he bowls at his best.
Agreed, but a bit slow these days, and no more than a good test 8, so would have to be 3 rd best quick which he is nowhere near.

Whereas stokes, Ali and maybe woakes could all bat top 6, woakes probably a test 7, bit like what India have done with ashwin
