England Team Discussion

I think something needs to be done about bouncers there to dangerous.

Looking at bowlers like Johnson and Starc there bowling 90mph balls aimed at the batsman’s head. When contact is made with the head the bowler will show instant concern and apologise but he was aiming for his head in the first place.

Some of the batsman this tactic is aimed at are poor on the back foot it’s asking for another tragedy.

The fact that the bower could possibly injury or course a fatality is a good enough reason to reduce bouncer height to chest height maximum and anything above a no ball.

Just as well you didn't grow up in the 70's, no helmets and proper fast bowlers hitting the high end of 90mph. That's the problem with the youth of today, you're all a bit soft. Maybe they should just bowl underarm!!

I'm a Sussex fan and I like Luke Wright in county cricket: especially in T20 stuff although his Championship performances are getting better. I think he's a bit of a ramprakash though: he looks like a player that should be very exciting and bat quickly in international cricket; but as soon as he makes the step up he's quite frankly abysmal.

the ball in that gif is literally a length ball, any rules you put in place to prevent bouncers would look ridiculous in that sort of situation.

the chances of there being another situation similar to hughes in the forseeable future is slim: that one was literally a perfect storm of factors. No sport can be 100% safe and while we should always endeavour to make every sport as safe as we can, at the same time we shouldn't dramatically change the rules of a game to prevent a tiny chance of a fatality which would still be there anyway if you had a pitch that was up and down - the only way to prevent situations like that is if the people at the top invest money in trying to work out ways to better protect batsmen in that area. The main issue that I could see from bouncers long term isn't from immediate fatalities it would be from the potential chances of concussions and the really serious health risks that happen when you have continual concussions during matches. Although that's something that's a much bigger problem in contact sports like Rugby and American Football: in cricket you don't have as high continual forces focused at the head and I believe that the players are generally rather good at going off if they feel odd anyway, and players should be made to go off if they are believed to be concussed anyway.

A couple of concerns for the England One Day Team

1. Eoin Morgan has effectively been dropped by Middlesex. He's only averaging 6 this season.
2. Although Willey made 91 today opening the batting, he's not bowling very much and he hardly ever takes the new ball for Northants. Something England were asking him to do against NZ. Don't think this is doing him any favours, and he might find he's not in the squad for the Australia series.

There are positives in the one day cup though.
1. Varun Chopra continues to score lots of runs
2. Adil Rashid is bowling a lot of overs and more economical than he has done in the past.
3. Alex Hales and Jason Roy are continuing their good one day records.
4. Liam Plunkett seems to be bowling well.
5. Steve Davies is smashing it for Surrey. Incredible to think he's probably our 4th choice wicket keeper.

I noticed that Chris Woakes isn't getting into the Warickshire team. Don't know if he's picked up another injury or whether he's just not in their best one day eleven.

…. Back in the old days when we would have a shave! now we wouldn’t use these after shaves you see in the shops it were soft it were or them fancy parfumes.. No! we would use a bit of petrol and rub it in our faces straight from can…

Wouldn’t have these fancy clothes you see the young ones wearing No!!.. we made robes from used sacks of corn.

those were the days eh? :D

He doesn't keep wicket anymore unfortunately, I think he gave it up in order to lengthen his Surrey career after realising that he sadly didn't have much of a chance with England.

He was my number 1 replacement to Prior and I had him ahead of Bairstow (before Bairstow started murdering county attacks this year) but I'm sure the ECB had their reasons for not picking him, perhaps he didn't quite fit into the side or something

I noticed that Wilson had the gloves at Surrey. Hadn't realised that Davies had retired from keeping. Shame.

Luke Wright has to be the most under rated t20 batter in the world. I have no idea how he doesn't open for England or doesn't have a very lucrative IPL contract.

Think 101 chances was enough for him really.

I don't think he was given as many chances as you think. He's done very well in the Big Bash against some pretty decent attacks.

he played at least 50 ODIs and 50 T20Is and did terribly

I don't even want to debate on the ODI's. The previous England ODI team was about three test specialists boring the hell out of people for 40 overs and then some fresh talent taking them to respectability in the last 10 overs.

You may be right about Luke Wright because I think his appearences were sporadic and I can't put my finger on it but boy there was some talent kept out to please the test lads. Hales for a good bit? Bopara? Jesus! How badly was he used? Dimitri Mascarhenas? Who else? I can't recall the keeper's name but he used to open. Craig Kieswetter?

Woakes would be in the 11, but he has picked up another niggle, after training with England pre the Edgbaston test, and to the person who said his one day record is atrocious, it just isn't, as long as he opens the bowling he will get movement and get batsman out

Ecb claims he isn't loud enough behind the stumps, but the fact he hasn't played a test is shocking.

Wilson is clunky captain and keeps for Surrey, so Davies not taking the gloves is useful, and he gets in the side easily as a batsman
