England Team Discussion

I get the impression Bayliss doesn't go for county stats. Just goes on what he sees. I think Vince is someone he's got a lot of time for. Also, I think Lions runs will count for more than county runs. Vince normally performs every time he puts on a lions shirt.

I do agree, was just saying he didnt do well last year

Luke Wright hit 86 off 53 last night against Islamabad United. With all the runs he's been getting lately, surely he must be in contention for a spot in the WT20 squad?

No space for him. He's probably first or second reserve I reckon, along with Dawid Malan.

Does anyone think Ravi Bopara will ever play for England again? I don't think he will or should in tests, but I can't help but think he'd still do a good job in limited overs cricket. I thought he was made a scapegoat of whenever we did badly at major tournaments.

It's not one of the bigger t20 tournaments around, but Bopara's bowling and batting is still really effective in the PSL.

Since I've been following cricket (from 2000), his failure to nail down a place in the side is the one I've found most frustrating, as I'm a big fan. The other thing that annoys me is that he never seems to get the credit for how good his t20 bowling is. I think he'd certainly be more effective out in India then somebody like Woakes. He's statistically one of the best English bowlers to have played t20 cricket.

Squad for world t20

Eoin Morgan
Jos Buttler
Joe Root
Jason Roy
Alex Hales
Ben Stokes
James Vince
San Billings
Moeen Ali
Adil Rashid
Liam Dawson
David Willey
Reece Topley
Chris Jordan
Steven Finn

Glad they've rewarded lions' performances and picked Dawson. Chris Jordan is a difficult one. If he can recreate that super-over he's definitely worth his place. But generally he's been quite embarrass lately so can't see how he'd keep out any of Broad, Plunkett or Woakes.

Two Hampshire players that I said would become good (3 if you include Briggs)? I should buy a lottery ticket!

Great performance today by Ravi Bopara. 60 odd at a strike rate of 200. 2-32 from 4 overs with the ball. Wasted talent.

James Vince also scored runs today.

It's sad the way England have handled Bopara, Wright and Finn in recent years. It's unlikely the former two will ever be back in England colours. I would have preferred both of them to Willey or Topley, both of whom look like up and down, county style bowlers.

Sad the way England have handled Bopara? I appreciate he's a good county player, but he's never dominated games like he does for Essex. Whether that's a lack of ability of temperament, I don't know, but it doesn't matter what the reason is really. He's played over 100 ODIs without pulling up any trees and he was poor the last couple of years that he played. He was rightfully dropped and I don't see a space for him in the side. Because he's certainly not as good as the likes of Stokes. He's had more than enough chances.

Wright I could understand playing T20s, but then England seem to have gone with Roy to open. That's the only spot in the side for him, so it's a 50/50 decision really. His bowling is no where near good enough to consider it a viable option and I think we have better batsmen in ODIs.

I think Roy has had his go, and this is the team id go with for the next ODI series
Ali up to the top where he can be natural, coming in to slog at the end isnt suited to him

Hales
Ali
Root
Taylor
Morgan C
Buttler WK
Stokes
Woakes/Rashid (surface dependent, dont think we need 2 spinners all the time)
Broad, but he should be kept rested until the major tournaments, so I think Woakes/Wood(if over niggles)
Finn
Topley

I think this team would certainly give us the best possible bowling attack. Broad, Finn, Topley, Stokes, Rashid and Ali is pretty decent. The only issue for me is whether Ali is good enough as a batsman to open. He's had some success up there but I think that there are at least 3 better one day openers in the country and perhaps as many as 6 or 7.

I agree that Bopara didn't fulfill his potential, but look at how many times he batted at 7 or 8 for England. He was messed around so much in the order. At Essex, he bats at 3 pretty much exclusively. I don't think he was ever given that chance (I might be wrong). The rare opportunities he was given to bat at 4, like the 2012 one day series vs Australia, he scored plenty of runs. He also bowled really well and was one of the more economical bowlers.

I dont think that overly matters, if you got Woakes/Rashid at 8 and Broad at 9, they can all bat, the extra bowling option is worth the marginal gains, but I am not evenconvinced Moeen was one of the best One day openers in the county game at Worcester. Im not sure who else you look at tbh, and Taylor is by far the best batsman not playing do i like this to get him in the team

You aren't getting an extra bowler in though. You're are essentially replacing Roy with Taylor. You've still got 6 bowlers which is what they've had the whole SA series.
