England Team Discussion

KP as scapegoat created way before Cook was captain the text scandal vs South Africa (Strauss was the captain that time).
Not a fan of Cook captaincy but he did a decent enough job in his tenure winning in India (2012) and South Africa (2015)and did not lost a series in England.

Sri Lanka 2014.

Absolutely scandalous that he survived that.

Steve Smith's test average as captain: 73.73 from 20 matches; not as captain: 51.83 from 30 matches.
Virat Kohli's test average as captain: 67.22 from 23 matches; not as captain: 41.13 from 31 matches.

There's no reason why the captaincy should affect his batting: i'd argue that if it does, ipso facto he's the wrong choice.

Unfortunately, the "process" Strauss has decided to apply means Root is undermined from the start. After the Aus 5-0, the farce in the West Indies and the loss to Sri Lanka we were repeately informed there was nobody else to consider as captain. the "process" indicates that now there are certainly other candidates that needed being assessed. it also allows the idea (as you've expressed) to fester that the captaincy can affect his batting negatively, that there is a question mark over his mental strength...

Its obvious that Root would've been the next captain . Besides , there's no one else in the English Test Team in whom I see, can lead the team . If also , then maybe Stokes , Bairstow or Moeen , apart from these no one else

Alternatively given the 3 interviewed, Root was being interviewed for the role he now has, Stokes was being interviewed for the role he now has and Broad was representing the senior members of the team that Strauss said the decision would be discussed with perhaps?

Joe Root to be named England Test captain | Cricket | ESPN Cricinfo

Not a great believer of "make your best batsman the captain of the team" theory. Not everyone can do it.

No one deserves than Root or Butler but Butler has limitation for test matches but only danger of England is if Root failed as batsman responsibility (SRT had same issue) besides captaincy, than England needs to find someone else.
