England Team Discussion

Malan hasn’t even been the most impressive batsman for Middlesex this season. Added to that, he plays in the second division which is inferior in quality. The last time Malan played for England at home, he was unimpressive with the bat and made some costly errors in the field.
That means aus should not have picked Labuschagne who scored more than 1000 runs this season! We have seen how good he is. And we know that the county stint played a huge role in performance. Most of the time he came very early in the innings. Almost playing as if he was a opener.

....I’ve already agreed with your point about Malan deserving a game given that he has previous international experience and has been much better in English conditions at the moment. Not sure why you have quoted my erroneous response again. :p

As for Marnus, I was initially against him being picked purely on the basis of second division stats but he has proven me wrong and shown that there is a quality player in there after all who was aided by the county experience. The point is that county stats aren’t a true indicator of a player’s ability at all times, Pujara for example couldn’t buy a run last year in county cricket while he was decent in England and the star in Australia later. Similarly, Bancroft was good in the same second division and yet was very poor with the bat in the Ashes.

It also depends on the quality of bowling you face and the pitches you play in. I'll be very frank over here, India played all their Tests in England last year on flat pitches which did not have much of bounce as compared to the pitches we generally have over there so Pujara's performance isn't exactly a true indicator of County performances. But the weather also plays a huge part in England. Overcast and windy conditions makes it difficult to bat in England. TBH last year when we played at Lord's it was a flat pitch but the fact is the wind and dark skies was the reason why we got bowled out on just about 120 in both innings in that match.

I have this horrible feeling like a potential win here will mean that this ddreadful England team will be persevered with

Untill they lose the next series of course.

In 2019 Jonny Bairstow averages 20.25.

Since the start of 2018: 25.91.

In the last three years 30.79 (38 tests, 3 centuries).

Anyone think he'll be dropped?
Lets hope so. The current Bairstow is more suitable for limited overs.

He absolutely has to be.

But he absolutely had to be in the Test side all summer, so who knows what'll happen.

Apparently Buttler is going to take the Test gloves, with Bairstow to play as a specialist batsman. I hope that is an ill-founded rumour that I read today

Bairstow a specialist batsman? In a test match? :lol:facepalm
Yep. Although I feel a little bit like I'm throwing stones from a glass house, because he'd get into the Irish Test side in such a role because we really aren't very good, and our awful funding is really making it tricky to build up a first-class competition of any value for highlighting our best batsmen
