England tour of South Africa 09/10

Both teams have bowling concerns. They should just add Harmison and SA should add Ntini to their squads.

Ntini is done as an odi bowler. Morkel and Parnel are available for this odi for SA. Parnel expecially will make a difference.

Toss is vital at this ground, side that bats first wins 80%.

Parnell looked really out of form in CT. Below pace and very expensive, how has he fared domestically so far this season?

Even with that he was still the top wicket taker in the competition. Taking 11 @ 17, the problem was the run rate going at 7 per over.

He has been injured so hasn't played a lot of domestic cricket.

I am liking this England XI. Still not happy with Prior in the side, but don't think there's too much to be worrying about. The bowling attack looks stronger with Broad and Swann back and our top 5 are very strong I feel. Alot of batting depth with Swann and Broad down at 9 + 10. Think we're slowly moving towards a genuinely good ODi team.

Would rather have seen either Plunkett or Onions in for Bresnan. I'm not convinced he's good enough as a specialist bowler, which is what he is when Broad and Swann are both in the side with him.

That's proving to be the trouble with the side right now. Only 3 guys in the side because they can bowl, the rest are there because they can bat. The balance doesn't seem quite right, especially seeing as no amount of lower order batting will chase down the runs they're about to concede.

That's blatantly pushing your own opinion as fact. How do you know someone like a Bresnan batting at 9 won't come in and blast 20 or so to win us the game?

Because that ain't gonna help if we concede 350+ odd runs, which looks a real possibility at the moment. I'm not a fan of Bresnan as you said I would much rather have Onions or Plunkett in the team

:facepalm

So in the history of One Day cricket, a team has never chased down a big score with a bit of help from the lower order? I may have said I'd prefer to see someone else in the team, but to guarentee that something won't happen, when it's still possible, is just stupid.

If Bresnan plays, he has to open the bowling. He's a swing bowler, and wasting the new ball with Broad banging it in half way down for 5 overs makes little sense. He bowled well in the last game as well, be harsh to drop him really, especially in favour of Plunkett or Onions. I'd rather see Mahmood in the side ahead of Onions and probably Plunkett as well.

If we concede 350+ runs, A) it is going to be down to the bowlers giving too much away, B) Because it is England our batsmen will choke so it won't matter if Bresnan scres 20, C) Having him in the side for a handful of runs when there are better bowling options out there is ludicrous, especially when you have Swann and Broad who are much better lower order batsmen.

Dunno why I am so keen on seeing Plunkett play, I just have a feeling lol :p

Don't really see what Bresnan's done wrong tbh. I wasn't happy with his selection when he was first picked, but he's done a decent job. He's no Flintoff, but he's a handy all-rounder. Reckon this ripping into him is abit of a knee-jerk reaction after his 2 poor overs early in the piece. I'm happy with him playing until Fred's fit. He's consistent, and if the ball's swinging he's a real handful. He proved in that last over that he's got a good yorker and is a good death bowler as well. Don't see what people have against him.

ABDV is awesome. Such a great player, one of my favourite players to watch in the world. Reckon we're going to get to see alot of him in this ODi and Test series as well. See him battering us in the Test series.

My criticism of Bresnan as a bowler had nothing to do with this game. If we need someone to bat at 8 and bowl a bit, then fair enough, get him in. However, in this game, we just needed a specialist bowler and he's shown (in his ODIs to date) that he can't take wickets consistently and he doesn't slow down the run rate normally either.

To whoever said that conceding 350 is always the bowlers fault, they obviously haven't seen some of the roads in world cricket at the moment, with small boundaries getting even smaller. You need to be able to chase big totals to be able to win series'.

He's going at 5.24 runs an over in the last year in ODi cricket, and he's certainly a better death bowler than anyone else we've got in our side. The rest don't seem to realise that bowling length doesn't actually work in the last 10 overs. I think he's doing a good job, he's not a genuine wicket-taker, but I don't think that's his job. He keeps the runs fairly tight, he's good at the death, is capable of running through sides if there's movement and he's a good all-round cricketer. Certainly a more consistent option than Mahmood, Plunkett or Onions; Sidebottom's another matter.
