England tour of South Africa 09/10

Jimmy seems to be getting the ball to banana today! Bloudy glad it's not me out there, I prefer to eat bananas!

Das is a gut question! In answer to why would dutchy want to park his car on a cricket pitch, I always felt with the windows it might make a good short leg or maybe a mid wicket.

Stating the utter obvious but England will want to pick up a couple of wickets before lunch: they don't seem to be as penatrative as the South African bowlers were this morning, although they had of course different quality of batsmen to charge at, but still.

Not much of a deficit thanks to Cook, Bell and latterly Prior. It is a shame to have lost those two wickets early, might well have denied England a lead which could have been crucial. We've got to score 19 more runs than them batting last, might well be tricky if that is anything more than 200 let alone 250. It's a shame so many of our batsmen threw their wickets away, they might get good balls 2nd innings and not be able to do anything about it then. As I said previously, runs scored at any stage are crucial but 1st innings is when you really need to get them. We were lucky to get that close, I said the saffers had a good chance of a 50+ run lead and that nearly got proven spot on.

England did win a Test, the decisive win, in the 04/05 series having trailed by just eight runs on 1st innings. But on that occaision they batted 1st so didn't have to bat last. England really need to get through South Africa pretty quickly, probably going to have to be the lowest total in the Test and possibly by some distance if England are to win.

Well played to Ian "icing on the cake" Bell for helping claw us out of the doodoo KP, Trott, Strauss and Collingwood left us in. He may well be much criticised, but they all played poor shots and scored 41 between them to Bell's 48. Only Cook faced more balls in the innings, Cook and Kallis in the Test so far. You sure can't score runs from the pavillion, shame he and Cook then threw their wickets away as well. KP's highest score of the series so far came when guiding England to safety in the 1st Test, but after his STUPID run out England went from 172/3 to 218/9 and needed Onions to hold on for the draw.

Cook's 65 was his FOURTEENTH score between 50 and 65, that's an amazing 15.4% of his innings and only one less than his scores between one and nine. Only FOUR times has Cook scored a fifty in a Test and England won it

60 & 106 vs West Indies 2007 - England had a 141 run 1st innings lead, but only won by 60 runs in the end
44 & 50 vs New Zealand 07/08 - England had a 144 run 1st innings lead, Cook was top scorer 2nd innings
39 & 67 vs SOUTH AFRICA 2008 - only Test we won in the series, and won batting last, but we did have a 122 run 1st innings lead.
95 & 32 vs Australia 2009 - England led by 210 runs on 1st innings, the opening stand of 196 between Strauss and Cook was only 19 runs less than the aussies' 1st innings total. At 313/5 in their 2nd innings a lot of people were twitchy, although it was still unlikely even at that point that the aussies would score over 500.

So ignoring the Test where he also made a century, and that beating the windies and kiwis is no great feat, that's two Test wins over good opposition. Every Test Cook has scored a fifty in that England won had a 1st innings lead of over 100, it's quite refreshing to have a Test where the 1st innings are close. Let's see if Broad turns up today, so far he has taken 10 wickets in the series but only more than two ONCE when South Africa were playing silly beggars. Onions could do with a few wickets, the only England bowler not to have taken 10 yet and he's taken only three wickets in the last Test and a half. While I strongly believe in six batsmen and four bowlers, especially for overseas Tests, they do need to all contribute. Thus far Onions is lagging behind a little.

Oh and one final thing, in your face for all those who think the keeper should be picked primarily on their keeping ability. Prior came to the crease at 133/5 and helped add a further 140 runs. His 60 in the last Test helped add 112 for the 6th wicket and took England from a 22 run lead with five wickets in hand, to a 134 run lead. Without his runs England could well be level or behind in the series and looking down the barrel.

I think unlike the Indian fans, we prefer to actually watch the game than comment on every delivery.

Thisis exactly what I mean, it's all rubbish. Looks like the C07 downloads forum, oh.. wait...

On a real note, I hope prince is out, he is due a score and with his conversion rare as it is, if he gets 50, he'll most probably get to a hundred.

Give them a break. They have their little ways, you have yours.

Hoping Prince can make some runs here, he's been struggling and I there's not much to suggest he enjoys opening the batting.

@ Owzat Woah! Need to get a stiff drink and read through this one properly! Great the amount of time and effort you go to to prove this or that point. Personally I like your posts! Find them very insightful!:)

hey Dutch. I can guarantee you that it's been all beers and AC09 with my colleague. Our highest 50-over one-day score was 198 until we had a screamer of a match at Kolkata. We made 342 and he scored 162 as Mohammad Yousuf! Er... I played the "supportive" roles at the other end LOL :D

I firmly believe your being too harsh on onions, it's like flintof stat that he only took 2/3 5 wicket hauls in his test career. IMO Onions gas bowled much better than Broad, but Onions is doing it the 'Mcgrath' way and building pressure from one end whilst the other bowlers take wickets.

Forgive my ignorance, which is ample and renowned, but what does that mean???

CR on the wayside for the moment. My frustrations echoed what Hmarka has already said about the game. Fingers crossed for CR2 if and when it comes out.

Swann you legend!!!! He is becoming such an important link in the England attack now! On after just 10 overs and whammo!:) Smith has obviously decided the best form of defence is attack with Swann so this could get very interesting!!!

Dutchy, can you right a song about swanny? :).. here's my attempt,

Oh Graeme Swann, you are the don,
Ohhh Graeme Swan, you are the don,
your better than that tw** warne,
Oh graeme swann you are the don.

to the tune of a famous chant which I don happen to know the name of.
