Not much of a deficit thanks to Cook, Bell and latterly Prior. It is a shame to have lost those two wickets early, might well have denied England a lead which could have been crucial. We've got to score 19 more runs than them batting last, might well be tricky if that is anything more than 200 let alone 250. It's a shame so many of our batsmen threw their wickets away, they might get good balls 2nd innings and not be able to do anything about it then. As I said previously, runs scored at any stage are crucial but 1st innings is when you really need to get them. We were lucky to get that close, I said the saffers had a good chance of a 50+ run lead and that nearly got proven spot on.
England did win a Test, the decisive win, in the 04/05 series having trailed by just eight runs on 1st innings. But on that occaision they batted 1st so didn't have to bat last. England really need to get through South Africa pretty quickly, probably going to have to be the lowest total in the Test and possibly by some distance if England are to win.
Well played to Ian "icing on the cake" Bell for helping claw us out of the doodoo KP, Trott, Strauss and Collingwood left us in. He may well be much criticised, but they all played poor shots and scored 41 between them to Bell's 48. Only Cook faced more balls in the innings, Cook and Kallis in the Test so far. You sure can't score runs from the pavillion, shame he and Cook then threw their wickets away as well. KP's highest score of the series so far came when guiding England to safety in the 1st Test, but after his STUPID run out England went from 172/3 to 218/9 and needed Onions to hold on for the draw.
Cook's 65 was his FOURTEENTH score between 50 and 65, that's an amazing 15.4% of his innings and only one less than his scores between one and nine. Only FOUR times has Cook scored a fifty in a Test and England won it
60 & 106 vs West Indies 2007 - England had a 141 run 1st innings lead, but only won by 60 runs in the end
44 & 50 vs New Zealand 07/08 - England had a 144 run 1st innings lead, Cook was top scorer 2nd innings
39 & 67 vs SOUTH AFRICA 2008 - only Test we won in the series, and won batting last, but we did have a 122 run 1st innings lead.
95 & 32 vs Australia 2009 - England led by 210 runs on 1st innings, the opening stand of 196 between Strauss and Cook was only 19 runs less than the aussies' 1st innings total. At 313/5 in their 2nd innings a lot of people were twitchy, although it was still unlikely even at that point that the aussies would score over 500.
So ignoring the Test where he also made a century, and that beating the windies and kiwis is no great feat, that's two Test wins over good opposition. Every Test Cook has scored a fifty in that England won had a 1st innings lead of over 100, it's quite refreshing to have a Test where the 1st innings are close. Let's see if Broad turns up today, so far he has taken 10 wickets in the series but only more than two ONCE when South Africa were playing silly beggars. Onions could do with a few wickets, the only England bowler not to have taken 10 yet and he's taken only three wickets in the last Test and a half. While I strongly believe in six batsmen and four bowlers, especially for overseas Tests, they do need to all contribute. Thus far Onions is lagging behind a little.
Oh and one final thing, in your face for all those who think the keeper should be picked primarily on their keeping ability. Prior came to the crease at 133/5 and helped add a further 140 runs. His 60 in the last Test helped add 112 for the 6th wicket and took England from a 22 run lead with five wickets in hand, to a 134 run lead. Without his runs England could well be level or behind in the series and looking down the barrel.
