England tour of South Africa 09/10

Very interesting call on tahir. He hasn't been making the titans squad and been playing amateur cricket for easterns. But I guess this calls for desperate measures.

Wayne Parnell is in line for his Test debut in South Africa's must-win final Test against England at the Wanderers next Thursday, after being named in a 15-man squad that also includes the 30-year-old former Pakistan A legspinner, Imran Tahir.

After the agonising failure to claim England's final wicket in the third Test at Cape Town, South Africa travel to Johannesburg trailing 1-0 in the series, and so have chosen to cover all options at a venue where spin can be effective, but which also promises to assist the seamers after weeks of damp weather.

Parnell, 20, has been a regular for South Africa in limited-overs cricket and produced some memorable performances in the World Twenty20 in England in June. He was included in South Africa's squad for the first Test in Centurion only to be released from the squad on the eve of the match in favour of Friedel de Wet.

De Wet, however, has been struggling with a back injury that required an injection on the final day at Cape Town. He was noticeably down on pace throughout his last-day spell, and his place in the squad will depend on the outcome of a scan. Makhaya Ntini was another name in the frame for a last hurrah, but his latest omission has all but confirmed his international retirement.

Tahir, meanwhile, has been in the wickets for Easterns this season, and was also prolific for Hampshire in his recent stint in county cricket, claiming 52 wickets at 32.90. He played two matches for Pakistan A back in 2005, and has also featured for Middlesex and Yorkshire.

Alviro Petersen and Ryan McLaren, who have featured in the squad for all three Tests, have retained their places. "This is a must win Test for us," said South Africa's convenor of selectors, Mike Procter, "and we have covered all our bases as far as the composition of our attack is concerned."

Squad Graeme Smith (capt), Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, Friedel de Wet, JP Duminy, Paul Harris, Jacques Kallis, Ryan McLaren, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Alviro Petersen, Ashwell Prince, Dale Steyn, Imran Tahir

After all this bashing of England having the likes of Pietersen and Trott in their team, South Africa call up Imran Tahir. Priceless. :D

I like the look of Parnell so I'm glad to see his inclusion, even though its probably too early for him at test level and if Du Wet recovers he very unlikely to get a game. I can see him posing a threat with the new ball but after that, providing it isn't a green top, he could look a bit unexperience and may be quite hittable.

Not too sure if Tahir is that good of a pick as he hasn't been in his franchise team's XI and although he had a decent season for Hampshire last season it wasn't too much to write home about. Having said that he will probably do better than Harris who looks completely out of form. Looks to me like he has lost his action and keeps falling away on to the offside.

Looking forward to the final test for England I can see a close game that could go either way. Either South Africa will come out all guns blazing to try to get the draw or will be downheartend after coming so close as what happened in the second test.

Looking forward to it should be a decent match.

Wayne Parnell is certainly an interesting one. He did really well in the T20 World Cup last year but has apparently struggled in domestic cricket this season according to what I've heard and seen of his stats.

Parnell is an interesting one. Seems to lift his game when he is with the national squad but bowls like crap when with the warriors. Also lacks discipline when with them as oppose to the proteas.

I doudt De wet will recover in 7 days. Backs spasm are usually tough to get over and he has a history of back problems. In fact he retired from cricket due to it for a while.

Certainly. But i seriously didn't know there was a place in South Africa called East London

You didn't know your own side played a warmup game before the first test in East London??

I'm guessing you mean the win not the draw?

Wasn't it something to do with his assss?
