England tour of South Africa 09/10

That would be rubbish...McClaren is mediocre at best, from what Ive seen of him im astounded that CSA would even consider him a candidate, let alone go through all the hassel of bringing him back from County Cricket - because to be honest thats the highest he should have climbed. Bowls a bit faster than Collingwood and bats like an out of form Ontong - not exactly what we need to win a crucial final test.

As far as Im concerned they can get rid of Harris, as you said, Duminy is doing a way better job at it anyway...and then bring in Tsotsobe as the forth seamer. He might not be a decent batsman but i'd bet more on him taking a couple of wickets than on McClaren scoring more than 15. Im tired of these bits-and-pieces players who we think we need in the team just to make up the number 8 slot. Steyn, Morkel and Parnell can all hold a bat and in fact I feel any of those can come in just after Boucher if Tsotsobe has to go in at 11 then fine.

Problem is Tsotsobe isnt in the squad, so that rules him out. But certainly for future reference I would add him above McClaren.

Valaskjalf added 3 Minutes and 34 Seconds later...

I agree...you see thats what gets me with these pitches that are so-called "catered" for our team or our "amazing seam attack". For some reason the SA team seem to forget that when it comes to swing, Anderson is far better at it than probably even Dale Steyn so Im not sure what theyre getting so excited about. I would be shaking in my boots batting first up on a green pitch against Anderson he is a genuine swing bowler.

Then again, this is the final test and we need a pitch that somehow guarantees a result so from the perspective I suppose it makes sense.

They wouldn't be preparing a green pitch if we weren't 1-0 down in the series. But desperate times call for desperate measures. 100% sure if they had finished of either of the cape town or centurion games there would be no talk of a green pitch.

On Tsotsobe the issue with him is he doesn't have the pace to bowl with the old ball and if it doesn't swing he really struggles. He won't get the new ball in this SA so that really nullifies any chance of him playing. Unlike parnell who bowls at decent pace so can still do a job with the old ball lopsy struggles to get past 130kph.

How green will it be?

No one here has seen the pitch. All I know is the papers are talking about a fast green pitch. Arthur has also talked to Chris Scot (groundsman at wanderers) to give the side a results pitch.

If anybody is good at drawing Test matches, its England. Series win for sure here :happy

Payback for the farce in England last time, at least we won one of those tests :)

If we go with the same team then we will lack in the bowling department on a pitch "expected" for Steyn and Morkel etc. Plus if they have a seamers pitch Swann won't be taking as many wickets. Broad to take 10fer:rtfl

De Wet's definitely out of the final Test with a stress fracture of the back, his 3rd in the last 2 years. Gotta feel for him, he'd bowled very, very well in his debut Test and was clearly feeling the injury as his 2nd Test went on. Hopefully he'll get fit and be back for SA, looks a good talent.

Yeah I mentioned the bit about the green pitch and how we need to win so Im on the same page as you about that....My only problem (as you probably figured out) was McClaren who seem to be a spot-filler instead of actually bringing anything valuable to the table. Whether that has anything to do with our lack of depth (which I dont think is the case) I dont know, but surely he cant be the best next player to come in??

I actually think McLaren can become a valuable player for SA. He's a bowling allrounder, and can keep it tight (in low pressure environments or is it the MTN40?) Also he takes pressure of the other bowlers if he and Harris can tie both ends up for a few overs

I can't see both McLaren and Harris playing in the same 11 unless there are injuries. Reminds me of Pollock and Harris in the same team and Smith moved away from that because it was too defensive. Pollock was then dropped for Morkel.

There is a lack of quality all rounders. Lots of good young batsmen and a few promising young bowlers. But there is no real quality all rounder around hence why mcclaren is getting picked.

Hence my question...If there's a lack of quality all rounders why settle for that? Why not go for a specialist? Without McClaren we will have Kallis, Steyn, Morkel, Parnell and Duminy as the 5 bowlers. Why throw in McClaren as a 6th choice? He will probably end up bowling 10 overs in the test with little threat to any of the batsmen. Likewise with his batting....as I said in my previous post, most of those lower order bowlers can handle the bat and in a way they already count as semi-allrounders.

With Harris possibly not making the team and de Wet out of action, why is there a need to suddenly bring in a guy who probably cant do a better job with either bat or ball? If it were up to me id bring in a specialist...this "lets have an allrounder for the sake of having an allrounder even if he's not very good" is absurd. We have the best allrounder in the world in Kallis...no need for the CSA to get greedy.

Seems silly to go for a lesser all rounder. Get in a specialist. It appears they just dont want to be forced to use Kallis as THE all rounder, I think they would rather use him as a bonus bowler.

*Hi 5* Finally someone sees the light. Id go as far as to say forget McClaren and throw in Alviro Petersen at 7:

smith
prince
amla
kallis
de villiers
duminy
petersen
boucher
steyn
morkel
parnell

still 5 bowlers, still 4 quicks and an extra batter to boot, which strengthens our fiddly / unpredictable top order as well --> win

I presume of those 5 bowlers, you mean Kallis and Duminy? (Don't know if A Petersen bowls or not). If so, makes you very light on bowling.
