England had a lot of work to do on the final day of this 4th test match, and with 4 wickets down, many had already written them off from winning this test match.
But this England team has a special weapon, in the form of Andrew Flintoff. The lancastrian lad whose 90 in the 1st innings helped England save a follow on, and this time, he got to his century, and was also unbeaten at the end.
He was well supported by Graham Thorpe and Geraint Jones, and though it was not a flash innings that we usually see from Freddie, it was probably one of the most important ones.
England needed another 171 runs to win when play started on day 5, and had 6 wickets in hand. Flintoff and Thorpe extended their partnership to 76 runs, before Thorpe was run out for 28. Thorpe was replaced by Geraint Jones, who stayed there till the end along with Andrew Flintoff.
With this win, England have sealed the series 3-0, with the final test match at Centurion remaining. This is a great achievement for Vaughan and his boys, as they become only the second team to win a series in South Africa since its readmission to test cricket in 1992.
Deservedly, Andrew Flintoff was named man of the match for his two crucial knocks in both innings.
