Ponting puts World XI on top

World XI 122-2 (20 Overs)
S. Fleming 9*(9) I. Pathan 1-9
H. Gibbs 28*(49) Mohammad Sami 1-24
R. Ponting 56(59)

World XI needs another 127 runs to win from 30 overs
Current RR: 6.1, Required RR: 4.23

Rameez Raja: Ricky Ponting's half century has surely put World XI on top of this game. Some superb shots played by the Australian captain, and what a big wicket it was for Asia XI when Irfan Pathan had him bowled. But despite losing two wickets, I think World XI are very much in the driving seat in this game.

Ravi Shastri: Yes Rameez. Even though Asia XI were 130-3 at this stage, they lost their way after that, and I dont think the World XI will repeat them in this respect. But I think its probably still a bit to early to pass a judgement.
However full credit to Irfan Pathan, as he produced a sensational delivery to dismiss Ricky Ponting.

Rameez Raja: Now lets have a look at the highlights.

World XI post easy win

World XI 251-3 (43.3 Overs)
B. Lara 60*(60) Mohammad Sami 1-24
R. Ponting 56(59) I. Pathan 1-49
S. Fleming 53*(67) S. Afridi 1-53
H. Gibbs 43(68)

Asia XI 248 all out (44.4 Overs)
Shoaib Malik 68(48) S. Pollock 3-32
S. Jayasuriya 34(33) D. Vettori 2-42
K. Sangakkara 26(36)

World XI won by 7 wickets
Man of the Match: Shaun Pollock (WRLD XI)

David Gower: World XI have beaten Asia XI by 7 wickets here at Sharjah. This is their second win in as many games against the Asians.
Well Herschelle Gibbs was the only man dismissed after the 20th over, when he was out stumped by Sangakkara off Shahid Afridi.
After that Stephen Fleming and Brian Lara guided the World XI home with a 108 run unbeaten partnership.

Geoffery Boycott: Yes a clinical performance by the World XI. Ricky Ponting's quickfire fifty put the Asian XI on the backfoot, and Fleming and Lara finished the job in a very professional manner. Good performance by the World XI.

David Gower: The scorecard reflects how comfortably World XI won this game. It was pretty much a cruise.

Freddie to skip Bangladesh Tests

Andrew Flintoff has been cleared by England to start the season with his county Lancashire instead of playing in the two-Test series against Bangladesh.

The all-rounder returned early from England's tour of South Africa to have an ankle operation.

He could make his comeback as a batsman in Lancashire's opening Championship game against Somerset next month.

Mike Watkinson, Lancashire's director of cricket, said: "When he bowls and how much will be up to him."

Watkinson, speaking to the Daily Telegraph, added: "The plan is that 'Freddie' will start off playing just as a batsman and then gradually build up to bowling a few overs."
Flintoff is unlikely to be used in the two Test matches against Bangladesh in May and early June.

Instead, he is likely to play in a large chunk of Lancashire's Championship matches.

He is working to a plan drawn up by the England and Wales Cricket Board with the aim of producing him in mint condition for the first Test against Australia which starts on 21 July at Lord's.
Flintoff played only six Championship games in the last three years, most recently in June 2003.

Bangladesh announce 16-man squad for England tour

Bangladesh have dropped all-rounders Alok Kapali and Mushfiqur Rahman from a 16-man squad for their forthcoming tour of England.

Bangladesh have picked three uncapped players in their 16-man squad for the upcoming tour of England. Habibul Bashar has been retained as captain for the tour, in which they will play two Tests before competing in the one-day NatWest Series against England and Australia.

Shahadat Hossain, the fast bowler, Shahriar Nafees Ahmed, a middle-order batsman, and Mushfiqur Rahim, the reserve wicketkeeper, were the three new players picked. The rest of the squad was on expected lines, with Mohammad Rafique and Enamul Haque junior picked as the main spinners.

The naming of the squad came a day after Dav Whatmore signed a new deal that extended his contract by another two years, up to the 2007 World Cup. Faruque Ahmed, the chief selector, felt that Whatmore's experiences with coaching Lancashire will hold the team in good stead during the trip: "The tour will be a tough experience for our boys because of the completely different conditions in England," Ahmed told the Sky Sports website. "But we are now spirited by having our coach for another two years."

Bangladesh squad
Nafis Iqbal, Javed Omar, Habibul Bashar (capt), Mohammad Ashraful, Rajin Saleh, Aftab Ahmed, Khaled Mashud (wk), Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Shahriar Nafees Ahmed, Mohammad Rafique, Enamul Haque jr, Mashrafe bin Mortaza, Tapash Baisya, Anwar Hossain, Talha Zubair, Shahadat Hossain.

ECB unveils new strategic plan

192593.jpg

ECB Chief David Collier

The England & Wales Cricket Board intends to reward those counties which put English interests first, according to a new strategic plan, unveiled by David Collier, the chief executive, on Tuesday.
The blueprint was unveiled at a school in Southall, West London, with both Michael Vaughan and Clare Connor, the England men and women?s team captains, in attendance. It is built on four key pillars, and the majority of recommendations will come into effect in 2006.

The first pillar concerns the governance of the domestic game, and to that end, it has been decided to whittle the ECB down to three committees ? cricket, finance and commercial. The First-Class Forum, which represents the interests of the 18 counties, is to be disbanded in favour of a 12-man management board, and it is hoped that, by December 2009, 25% of the fee payments to first-class counties will be performance-related.

The second pillar concerns the vibrancy of the domestic game, which has been boosted in recent years by the success of Twenty20 cricket, but still has much room for improvement. In the next four years, the ECB hopes to see a 15% increase in county audiences, and by providing a financial incentive for counties to nurture their homegrown talent, they could also end the influx of players that have been signed under the terms of the Kolpak ruling.

Grass-roots cricket is the third pillar, an essential factor that needs extra attention now that the decision has been made to sell the rights for home Test series to Sky TV. The Minor Counties, it is hoped, will act as a go-between, with the ECB rewarding those teams who have an average age of less than 26, but the bulk of the initiative will be a ?5million interest-free loan to grass-roots clubs.

All of which is, of course, aimed at producing successful England teams, and the ECB intends to create a development squad of 25 players from which both the Test and one-day teams can be selected. And instead of tour matches being half-hearted charades, the likes of the Australians and Indians will come up against highly competitive England A sides in their warm-up games.

?This is a strategic plan for cricket, not just for the ECB,? said Collier. ?It clarifies roles and provides targets for everyone involved in cricket. The ECB has already received broad support for this plan from all our stakeholders and partners. Cricket is set for some exciting changes.?

Having recently returned from the Women?s World Cup in South Africa after leading England to the semi-finals, Connor said: ?I think to have a clear vision of where the women?s game is headed is very important, and I think it?s also important that the players and everyone involved in the women?s game, including the volunteers, know that the women?s game has been given that attention.?

Vaughan, who joined Connor in conducting a coaching clinic for several young cricket fans after today?s launch, said: ?It?s important that you focus on the job that you?re given, trying to win the game that you?re playing in or the series you?re playing in, but you?ve also got to have an eye on the future and it?s great that this plan has got that eye on the future.?
