FOOTBALL Football Manager Discussion

That's pretty good, as it's now the Summer Hols, I am planning on getting into some FM playing again.

You just love Ireland and Northern Ireland don't you Blake :p

I do actually, I just loved playing in Northern Ireland in FM08 due to the shorter league seasons (the bottom two divisions were 22 games and the top one was only 30) and despite that increasing to 38 games for the Premiership now I still love playing in it.

It's not really a strong league so if you get a really good team you can dominate, and set all sorts of records. People have won the Champions League out of Northern Ireland before, and the two record goal-scoring players in FM history have both come out of Northern Irish clubs (one player scored over 3,100 goals in his career in FM08 on one person's save that got to about 2050).

I've managed in England as well, don't get me wrong, but I have a strange affection towards Northern Ireland. :D

I suppose it helps if you are actually good at the game because then you can enjoy wherever you play. I've been pretty awful at the last two versions.

I tried my hand at lower league management but it didn't really appeal to me. I became manager of Elgin in Scotland. They had no real ambition and only wanted to gain experience from the competitions, the media also predicted we'd finish bottom of the lowest division. I was doing really well, battling it out with another team (Forfar I think) for 1st spot. It just gets a bit boring though with random players I don't know. Especially with them being crap so I can't go into depth with tactics.

FM10 is definitely a lot harder than FM08, it helps if you get your tactics spot on though. Currently I play a narrow 4-2-3-1 with three centre attacking mids and one lone striker up front. I get all of our passing done through the middle and I try and play a lot of through balls out in front of my striker because he is fairly quick but not great at heading. He scored 33 goals in 45 games last season, and 36 in 40 the season before.

I'm finding it a real challenge though to overtake Linfield in this save. In my FM08 one with QUB, we won consecutive promotions from the Second Div, to the First, and then I won the Premiership in the first season. This save in FM10 it's not to be though, I've finished comfortably second in both seasons in the top flight but Linfield just get better and better - they lost only one from 38 last year and that was a 5-4 defeat I inflicted on them.

Linfield, the Northern Irish giants. :(

Looking on SI and they have a few 'clans' going on over there which look quite fun. It's basically about 8 people and they play in the Premier League or something like that on a network game, playing each other a lot and voting for Manager of the Season and stuff like that.

Wouldn't mind something where we could just do it a few times, obviously not season after season but I wouldn't mind giving a network game a shot. It is quite laggy if you aren't the host but it's definitely bearable.

Anyone up for this? Or too much effort required. Even if it was just 3 players or something, would still be alright.

It's a good idea and I'd be up for it but there is a time difference. Having said that, I'm off until September with nothing to do all day!

And I'm on a two week break bored half to death, meaning that I soon become nocturnal and fit perfectly into the English timezone.

I know they can take forever! We would have to have a set time for us to play each week/weekend. I did one last year at school, there was a about 5/6 of us playing in the Coca Cola Championsip, think we got about 15 games done. It is quite good fun, and mine and Jack's game used to take a fair while, but that was primarily down to it being FM09 and it being so slow!

FM09 was heaps slower, but the network games do definitely take a while to do. I played a LAN game with my bro for about three hours, and we didn't even get to the start of the Premier League. He organised about eight friendlies and wanted to watch Liverpool thump all these dreadful teams 8-0. :facepalm

If we get something like this set up though, we need to have a few basic rules. No downloadable tactics, no scouts or editors. That should work.

Yeah agree with all those rules. Also maybe let assistant take care of friendlies? I understand that a lot of people use the friendlies to tweak their tactics, myself included, but it does take a while.

I always found transfers were the ones that took the most amount of time.

And I think you would have to set up a time limit that someone has to play their bit. Otherwise someone could take 10 minutes over a period of time.

You can set the options so that it automatically continues when 50% of users have pressed continue, or anywhere from 10% increments up to 100% I believe, so that wouldn't be a problem.

Should we start making a list of those interested?

1. Blake ;)
