A lot of discussion on Indian captaincy in a variety of thread has prompted me to start this one. Cricket Australia, for the better part of the 1990's and early 2000's had a program wherein they groomed youngsters specifically for the purpose of taking over as Australia's captain. This program has seen the likes of Ponting, Clarke and Paine take over in the latter part of their careers. Obviously, India doesn't have any such program at present and it would be very interesting to see which youngsters take over in the future.

The purpose here is to identify the individual who would be fit to lead India later on- for the sake of simplicity(some may call it confusion), I'd keep this thread open to all 3 formats- T20 , ODI and Test

Suryakumar Yadav is already 30 years old. I just dont see him getting the captaincy. India also like to pick one captain for all 3 formats combined so my guess is that Shreyas Iyer or Prithvi Shaw will be the next captain.

Just out of curiosity, what is the timeline that you're looking at here? As long as Kohli is playing, I don't think it's a possibility that anyone else will take over.

As the thread suggests, Future- post the era of Kohli and Rohit.

To your point above, if India doesn't land the WT20, Kohli will have to make way. I dont see him captaining India in 2023 if he doesn't get his hands on the WT20 this time.

I would be very surprised if that happens. Very much.

Really? I'd say the mannerism of crashing out will determine his future. Point to be noted here is that Kohli won't have Shastri to back him up - Ravi's contract ends post the T20 WC and he will not be in the reckoning.

Even if that doesn't happen (off chance), Kohli will relinquish the position post 2023 CWC. At that point in time, sense that either of Iyer/ KLR (depends upon his form) may take over.

SKY may not get Test captaincy. But am sure he will probably lead India in T20s- though not as a full time skipper- I do not rule out him becoming India's vice-captain in T20 in the next few years. He has done a good job in that position under Gautam Gambhir for KKR.

Anyone who can wins us the ICC Title.

On a Serious Note : For LOI Shreyas Iyer is the bet looking at the future.

For Tests - This is where the real questions need to be asked.

I could be wrong but I think Kohli, as the superstar of the Indian team, holds more weight than Shastri in most decisions regarding the team.

Per the Lodha reforms, Ravi Shastri is ineligible. If the BCCI wishes to continue with him, they face an ardous legal battle in the Supreme Court. I do not think they will go down that route.

Furthermore, I agree the team has done well under Shastri, however, we have no trophies to showcase his stellar performances. Hence, I feel, unless Ravi brings home the WT20, its gonna be difficult for him. This would also be the KPI for whosoever they select in this position- got to bring home at least 1 ICC Trophy during your tenure.
Don't think Rohit will get it until Kohli is there in the team.

Still feel Rohit will get T20 captaincy post WT20. Virat in the past 2 years has shown an aversion to leading India in this format. Going back a couple of years ago, you can clearly see that Kohli willingly took breaks during T20is, leaving Rohit in command. Again, if we do not get the WT20, Rohit will in all probability lead in the 2022 edition.

I don't think that is going to happen. If Rohit were to be given the reigns that would've been immediately after the exit from the 2019 WC. Just like South Africa did with Faf and Pakistan did with Sarfaraz.
