He's too young and yet to establish himself in the limited overs team. Test he is just not there upto the standard.
Pant is number 1 for me right now after Kohli. Because of his age and great ability Pant seems the natural option to replace Kohli long term. Shaw could be a good option for vice caption to Pant if he made the right amount of runs to get picked. Just how I see things currently. Things can change sometimes. I think Shaw has been underachieving in his career to this point and hopefully that changes.

Yes, even Pant is a good option but I think even he needs sometime at the International level provided not even a year ago he was terribly down on confidence and nowhere near the playing XI from an Indian Cricket team selector's perspective equally supported by Virat Kohli.

I think India are making a mistake by grooming KL Rahul for the Captaincy role. He just doesn't give a good impression as Captain of the PBKS in the IPL. And I remember he was a stand-in Captain for Rohit Sharma in a T20I game in NZ in the last match of the series which we won 5-0. And the way NZ were playing in that game it looked as if we were 3-1 down in the series. Thankfully, Rohit returned on the field and took control of the things. I believe Rohit should've been the LOI Captain already with Iyer being groomed for the role.

India honestly need to warm up to the idea of 'split captaincy', now that they've been forced into it due to COVID protocols. It is ok even if it leads to ego clashes between few players. The BCCI can set protocols around the professional handling of power across formats, and draw the appropriate lines around it.

Shreyas Iyer looks the best bet to me to take over from Kohli. I have had no good impressions on KL Rahul's captaincy at all, and have not had enough time to rate Pant's captaincy although seeing the way he handles DRS calls when asked by the captain/bowler, it does not fill me with confidence about his judgement skills. And I am not a fan of Prithvi Shaw's temperament that I want to see him as captain (I know he won a U-19 WC, but intl cricket is a different beast). SKY ticks a lot of boxes but age is not on his side. He could be a good stop-gap option like an Anil Kumble was during his latter days (I am somehow hoping SKY can captain a certain yellow IPL team :p).

I can see the Dhoni connection in people wanting Kishan to be captain. Maybe he could be a good captain (he seems a calm and composed personality who does not show aggression constantly). Similar case with Shubman Gill. KKR seems to rate him high enough to add him to their leadership group and pep him up as a potential future KKR captain. I think he could be the competitor to Shreyas if he holds up his current progression well enough.

I don't quite get the clamour for Pant the Captain. Bloke seemed more Sarfaraz than Dhoni when he was captaining Delhi Capitals. And this was with a coach like Ricky Ponting who prefers to be extremely hands-on.

The pathway seems to be neatly established for Shreyas Iyer in any case. Vihari's glaring flaws in his technique will mean that Shreyas Iyer shall inevitably get his chance soon which means he has a shot at being captain in all three formats. I personally am a believer in split captaincy in this day and age given how difficult it is to cross formats and play.

If it were possible I would quite like to see Rahane as Test captain and Rohit as white-ball captain, starting as soon in the future as tomorrow, but the cult of Kohli forbiddeth this.

Further into the future, I guess it sort of naturally falls to guys like Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw.

Keeper-captain is a huge workload, and India picking a fast bowling captain in the current day and age seems a little farfetched, so it kind of ends up being a batsman by default. Of those young players, Prithvi Shaw has probably the best captaincy record with eleven wins from eleven U19 ODIs

I don't think that is going to happen. If Rohit were to be given the reigns that would've been immediately after the exit from the 2019 WC. Just like South Africa did with Faf and Pakistan did with Sarfaraz.

Will happen if we crash out at the group stage- looks likely tbh! With years to go, the board will groom the next captain under Rohit in such a case.

Btw, comparisons with SAF and PAK are quite weird- both have their own set of problems when it comes to captains. So, wouldn't consider the arguments valid.

India itself has it's own history of not changing Captains despite of poor results. Dhoni himself continued Captaining India in T20s inspite of poor performances in 2009, 2010 & 2012 WT20 where India made a exit in Super 8's itself. Also, if they were keen on replacing Kohli they would've given Rahane the reigns in Test format. The fact is we give the Captains in our country so much power that no one is in a position to remove them. So, the fact is we just have to bear with him. We as fans are left with no other choice.

MS Dhoni was in command only cause N Srinivasan was the BCCI Prez. He has publicly admitted that he used every inch of his power to stop the Selection Panel from sacking MSD as skipper just before the 2015 CWC.

Kohli- he will go! Let Ganguly and Shah sort out the fracas created by Lodha. Ganguly isn't one who will take results lightly. In fact, the heat is definitely on Kohli and expect him to be sacked if the Cup doesnt come home.

We give powers to our captains- yes- But in 1990s, Tendulkar was swatted aside after a string of power performance, so was Azharuddin. Maybe, the administrators then were too powerful for the game- like of Dalmiya, Bindra and Dungarpur were hihgly respected and feared as leaders. In the recent past we have seen Srinivasan(MSD loyalist),Manohar( hell bent upon diluting BCCI's power), CK Khanna(puppet) as Presidents- neither of them thought much about the game. Expect this to change soon.

Just for the fact, Ganguly from the time he has been made BCCI president he hasn't done anything noteworthy to date. He has clearly been made a puppet under Jay Shah. He doesn't exercise his powers in a way a BCCI President would do. So I doubt whether he would've much of say in this.

Dunno about that! But can say that the ICC stopped harassing the BCCI. We got our way and mooted Shashank Manohar out of the ICC- a man who trying to subdue the Indian board. So, whether it Shah alone or Ganguly-Shah combine, I'd say its working better than the previous regime.

I did start an interesting topic. Almost a premonition that there were going to be massive debates around this

Eventually it wasn't Ganguly but Dravid's appointment that lead to the end of Kohli era. :p
