General Cricket Discussion

You totally missed my point I think. When I say it is the exact same position as SL, I meant pressure wise.

Bangladesh having qualified for the QFs have already gone beyond what was expected of them, so now they will be in the same fearless mode as Sri Lanka were going into the knockouts (ref: the quote :spy)

And never say never. Least of all in cricket :cheers

Sorry for the misunderstanding on my part buddy. Yeah youre right I made the mistake of saying India would never win the world cup again and we all know what happened in the last one.

Not taking anything away from SL cuz Arjuna marshalled his troops well and Sanath was just marvelous allround but things could have been different! So in essence Bangladesh are in no way similar to the SL team of '96 nor are the circumstances and most of all this cup is not being played in Asia! Bangladesh have only one world class player, Shakib and even with his heroics they could never lift this cup! NEVER!

Bangla is just going to be happy with the progress to the QF. If you remember ,when they reached the Asia Cup finals everyone expected them to go all the way. Pressure does get the better of Bangladesh in such situations. Even during the World T20 at home, they played under stress and lost. Ditto when they faced Afghanistan in the previous edition of the Asia Cup.

Ranatunga's SRL was a classy one. They had at least 4-5 match-winners unlike the Banlga side who relies heavily on Shakib. Its going to be tough for them to migrate to the Final 4, but they'll definitely give India a tough workout.

You know it doesnt take long for players to turn into match winners - just need a few breakout performances. And more than match winners, what Ranatunga's team had was well defined roles for each players if you read that article.

Jayasuriya and Kalu were to go out with all guns blazing regardless of the situation.
Gurusinha was asked to be the accumulator
Ranatunga and Mahanama were the finishers
Pushpakumara was literally there to make the new ball old
Murali and Vaas were the wicket takers
Dharmasena the backup spinner

Arvinda was the only guy not given a proper role and was the floater because he was the one true match winner. Jayasuriya, Murali, Vaas had not yet hit their strides into becoming the match winners they eventually went on to become.

Sri Lanka did have a vision and their players were well regarded all around the world. Drawing comparisons with the current Bangla set up, they haven't clicked as a unit. Agreed ,they made the QFs, but thats more on account of poor performances of England. Bangladesh saw an opportunity against an already weakened English line up and grabbed it.
The manner of their defeat vs SRL just goes to show that its a flash in the pan kinda situation here. IMO, they have been plain lucky to be in the QF.

IMO, they have been plain lucky to be in the QF.

As Untouchables666 pointed out, SL were even luckier back in 1996 having gained points off 2 forfeits. Plus I think this is really unfair to Bangladesh.

They actually defeated a much higher ranked team who were supposedly in good form coming into the tournament. Compare that to South Africa who only managed to beat only lower ranked teams, you could say that Bangladesh deserve to be in the QFs more than South Africa do.

One could even argue that those two sublime centuries by Mahmudullah were possibly more valuable and well built than Sanga's 4 centuries considering the situations they came in (28-2 and 8-2).

Bangladesh are here because they belong here. Saying otherwise is being downright disrespectful to the team and to cricket itself IMO

Yep, Bangladesh deserve it and so they are in the QF. They have played good cricket so far and most of the players have performed when it mattered. Saying they were lucky isn't correct.

I've just few words to say, in general.

This was the day, of 2007 when Ireland defeated Pakistan and Bangladesh defeated India in 2007's cup what confirmed both India and Pakistan's earlier exit. Such an unbelievable day it was. Beautiful too; Ireland and Bangladesh really shown it, it's their right to play in world cup.

I see cricket dying in their country, apparently. First fans, then ICC president of their origin and now the PM of 'em.
Hasina says Bangladesh were made to lose World Cup quarterfinal to India -

So because theyre voicing their opinions agaisnt the injustice meeted out they are wrong in doing so? I mean because of this cricket will die in Bangladesh? Care to explain exactly how, please, cuz the only way I can see cricket failing in Bangladesh is if in retaliation the BCCI/ICC decides to ostracise them from the game for raising their voices and standing up for the right thing![DOUBLEPOST=1426953135][/DOUBLEPOST]
