Statistically: batsmen on average scored more runs back then.

As for root causes; getting worse at batting probably has a little impact, but other factors probably include teams having deeper and stronger bowling stocks nowadays (more modern fitness standards probably help too), pitches in some places being made to benefit the bowlers, and the ball being more swing- and seam- friendly (the latter is unquestionably a huge issue in Aussie domestic cricket, at least)

He was certainly bowling a lot slower than he has done in the past
